    Default Ideas for Stormguard UA

So I was pondering about a stormguard UA while I was writing my contribution for the other homebrew thread and I think I may have hit onto something.

    Stormguard Officer and Standard Bearer

    PC: 2
    Officer: +1 mat/rat
    Tactics: Defensive Line
    Granted: Brutal Charge
    Minifeat: No Quarter

    Standard Bearer
    Standard

What do you think? Worth 11 points for the unit then?

Nope. Tactics: Defensive line is solid but Granted: Brutal Charge and no quarter just makes them start stepping on stormblade's and lances toes. And we really don't need more units that just make our other units pointless.

Stormguard are supposed to be an elite pike unit that rends infantry. Make the U/A 3 points and have it grant tough, give the standard a halberd (or rather, stick a flag on the second guys' halberd) that grants electrical insulation and give them a mini-feat of retaliatory strike or similar.
    Damn you, Cthulhu.

I would like to see them get tough. I also think Vengeance or countercharge would be .ice to have.

I think the electrical insulation is probably the most important ability they can get. Those league storm spearmen were amazing

I love storm-nouns and have a particular fondness for the Stormguard. I would love to see the following to make them my go-to frontline melee unit thanks to the UA.

    PC: 2
    Officer: +1 mat/rat

Tactics: Defensive Line – I think this is a great idea because it helps them become a little more of a self-sufficient front line unit. As a tactic, even if the officer dies they keep it making the unit worth the 8 points (min +UA) or 11 points (Max +UA) to field them.

Granted: +2 mat on the charge – Brutal Charge would be great, but I think it would push the UA into the 3-point zone if you add any tactic and/or minifeat also. That makes it a little too expensive to field in 35 and under games. However, I think giving them something that grants a +2 mat on the charge would keep the unit true to that elite infantry clearer role.

Order: Bob and Weave – as an order, I think it keeps it a pretty balanced unit buff that you have to choose carefully when to use to keep them alive. It helps them be a little more self-sufficient and creates the option of using them as a Def14/Arm17 tarpit that is worth 8 points (min +UA) or 11 points (Max +UA). The Piper could bump that up to Def 15 (with terror) and Junior could bump that up to Arm 20, and when people cry broken, point out it cost you a total of 13 points or 16 points to get them there.

Minifeat: a +2 or even +3 movement buff in the style of Desperate Pace so that they can either get up the field faster or extend their charge range for a really great alpha strike with the charge buff. Imagine this combined with Connie’s Crusader’s Call.

    Standard Bearer
    Standard
Granted: electrical insulation – eleaps can only bounce into enemy models within 4-inchs
    -or-
Granted: lightening strike – you choose which models eleaps jump into within 4-inchs of model that has been hit (although, even as a granted effect, it might push this into a 3 point UA)
    -and-
No weapon (as painful as it is to write that) to keep the UA at 2 points with all the other stuff.
