Default Minions at the UK Masters 2012

So, first time posting here really, so here goes nothing. My Report of the UK Masters 2012.

The event was held at the UKGamesExpo which is more of a boardgame convention (from what I saw) but still had a fairly large miniature presence there many demo games going on with everyone promoting their wears. I hadn't had chance to attend the previous year with my Trolls but after playing with them solid for over a year I wanted a change so at the start of the year I'd picked up a Croc force to take to the RHQ Masters Invitational (4 Games Hardcore, 4 Games SR) where I managed a 3rd place (from 16) and found some area's of weakness's which I tried to address. So, I knew roughly what I was taking, adding in a 3rd list (and just taking Crocs) made it a little harder writing lists, but I settled on these 3 little Gems. Just a note, the Bull Snapper is in my opinion the best model PP have made (though when I get my hands on Colossal's that might change) so that's what got me into the faction, so I might have a few of those.

Please find below my Masters List Submissions. Tickets we're brought by Brett Wilkie, along with the rest of Epic Flails (so, if by some miracle I could avoid playing against someone I drove down with day 1, that'd be ace).

So, Game 1, Richard McHale, Ret, Bunkers, Kaelyssa

The draw was done in advance so I knew what I was facing against. Playing against someone with the MHSF kinda reduces your options which meant I couldn't take Maelok as he'd just get shot ... lots. So, with a caster having Stealth on a stick I decided that it'd be a good idea to get 1 game with Calaban out the way (Divide and Conq Format). There was a big wood on one side of the table so Rich took that one to hide behind while I had a nice semi circle of wall to put Calaban behind (like, perfect!) incase I ever needed to drop Stealth from him (couldn't see it happening though). I used my Heavies and Snappers to push the Zone I needed to score in while used my starting Posse to hold my own (with Bog Trogs able to ambush behind Rich's reinforcements if required) and my Reinforcements to help push my scoring Zone. I managed to push out quickly using my naturally high arm to limit the shooting while using Snapjaw's submerge and a well placed wood to shield my Wrastler from the higher power shooting helped. I employed that age of tactic of running it all forward T1.

Richard advanced alittle more cautiousally as he was worried that Snapjaw would get into his force. Shooting took the odd point off the Turtle, but nothing major. My Gators on the left ran again exposing 2 of their number to flanking charges from Rich's reinforcements/Sentinels (we had a bit of impassable terrain protecting the rest) meaning the other 3 could then grind them off. My 2nd Gator unit via reinforcements pushed into his Zone killing a few MHSF and protecting myself from the Halb counter charge. The Turtle advanced and managed to scatter a shot onto the 1st MHA killing it outright and leaving me thinking that Calaban was nearly 100% safe while I could grind it out.

Rich's counter wasn't as hard hitting as I'd feared, I lost 1 Gator on the Right, 1 Gator on the left. That's about it. Rich helped me with my Fury management a little by shooting some off models with Kael (Phantom Hunter, behind a wood) but it wasn't an issue as I've kinda gotten used to always running hot and putting a bone grinder next to my turtle just incase. My 3rd turn saw my Bog Togs ambush and between the Gators on my left and those I killed both Destor Thanes, the Ghost Sniper and 4/5 Sents (Inc the UA) meaning that I no longer had to worry about losing on Scenario. Now to try and win on it. Calaban Feated to pick up a few extra fury for random Hex Blasts into units with stealth while hid lots just incase. The Wrastler, Snapjaw and my Gators cleared out the zone scoring me a point. This however left my heavies in retalitation range of the Ret double Phoneix. Spiney Growth went up on them and I hoped.

Rich loaded up the jacks, and a combination of Dice-1/Dice-2, loads of Health Boxes and Rubbish dice meant that I only lost 2 aspects between the Beasts, only 1 was in the Scenario Zone (but in advancing melee range of both my Melee Heavies). The Halbs hit some Gators but I only lost 1 while both Arcanists advanced into the zone to help contest it and delay my victory. On the left I lost a few bog trogs, but they'd done their job and anyone who lived was sure to be congradulated as a War Hero. In my turn Snapjaw advance (post being healed) and killed the Jack enganging my Wrastler, who then went to town, along with the Gators and killed everything in the zone giving me a 2-0 Scenario win. Rich was a gent and it was always a bad match for him, he went on to finish really well picking up a 4-3 overall, which is always nice for my SoS. The best bit though? After this game I only had to use Calaban once more

    More to Follows .....

Game 2, Nathan Hoole, Cygnar, Close Quaters with Killbox, Seige

Nathan, while not one of my club mates is a regular opponent, both at events and the odd time down at Club Nights at Maelstrom Games, wheres he's part of the other team/club which use's it as a base/regular meet up place in the Dragon Slayers. He's also a host of Alpha Strike Radio (http://dragonslayersclub.wordpress.c...-strike-radio/) where he'll give a much more detailed report of the game, explaining how he was unluck, robbed and generally cheated out of victory (Spoilers Hoooo!). I'd played him at a recent event @35pt Event up in York and picked up a win there via Bull Snapper Assassination to eStryker.

I drew Banarbas for this, I knew that ground pounder got around Swamp Pits but that I'd be safe from Defender etc and against a faction which generally lacks Pathfinder I could use the Swamp pits to deny charges or hide in if he picked a Hayley. I attopted the tactic handed down by generations of Minion players before me and activated barnabas first, put down 3 swamp pits, charged him into one and ran the rest of my army into others. I left my Croak Hunter a little vunerable but decided it was worth the risk to draw out a few rangers. Nathan advanced up lots and got into a position to unload T2. The Rangers took the bait and 3 advanced out into shooting range of the Croak, that'd be a dead frog but 3 less rangers from T2 onwards

More swamp pits went down and the Gators ran into them where possible (5 in 1, Barny+Wrastler+Turtle in another) while the last remaining unit Dirged and ran/charged into the Ranges/Nyss to get abit more arm for when Seige Feated. The Bog Togs arrived and killed 2 Storm Lances from the Full Unit, damaging the others (Arcane Shield was on them) while the Spitter took a shot into the Long Gunners, missed and landed the shot onto the Jnr, doing 5 damage and killing him outright denying Nathan Arcane Shield for the rest of the game. I managed to kill a few bits and bobs, nothing major and braced myself. Seige advanced, feated and placed a pounder onto Barny, it missed the wrastler (somehow), did a good 15 damage to my turtle and 6/7 to Barny (Spiney Growth helped here) which got moved onto a cheap Transfer Target/Animus in my backfield. The Nyss and Rangers both went to hit the Gators but decided against it as they were a little scary, morons, they're even scarier when they start hitting you! Seiges Charger went into the Gators hiding in a swamp pit and killed 2, Silly Feat The Storm Lances killed a few Trogs but generally, I still had everything which was important left alive so wasn't in a bad position.

Counter Attack Time. Barny put down another pit, advanced into it and feated catching most of the army. The Gators went to work, killing 5/6 Nyss, the Rangers, Long Gunners, the Wrastler got into the Charger and killed that. The Bog Troggs finished off 2 more Lances leaving 1 left. This left Nathan with 1 Stormsmith, 4/5 Nyss, Seige, a Defender and Seiges attachments left. The Defender and Seige or a Stormsmith opened up on Wrastler knocking out his Body but he was still active, the Nyss failed to rally. T4 saw me kill everything which wasn't Seige while Seige ran away hoping for me to mess up in T5. I used a cheeky Barny Charge(into a pit)/Free Warpath casting to move my Wrastler around the forest and into Seige, 1 Deathroll and a brought attack later = no more Seige.

Nathan went on to finish 6-1 with a rather tasty 7th place. Again, SoS scoring was already starting to be a talking point, if you lose you want to lose to a better player and we both knew that which one of us lost would still give the other a decent SoS so wasn't the end of the world.

So, onto Game 3. I'm part of a gaming group known as Epic Flail, we were a WHFB Group who've shifted over to WM/H's and we've been together for about 3/4 years I think. We've attended both the previous ETC's (26th, then 7th, hoping better this year) and play against each other a lot. So, with about 28 people left going into this round on 2-0, I was clearly drawn against the only other Flail member on the same score as myself.

Game 3, Brett Wilkie, Legion, Bethayne, Demolition

So yeah, I went up to visit Brett 3 weeks ago, we got 4 games in over the day, I lost them all. I had a rough idea of what would happen here (he was also, along with Jamie, the favorite for the event). He'd used pThag and eVayl in the previous rounds so I was fairly sure he'd drop Beth here, he ofc did. Barny Pits don't protect from Hex Hunters, Ravagores just shoot Calaban Dead so I decided to give Maelok his first outing. I'm a pretty decent Maelok player, he got me 3-2 at the recent Hardcore Heat and a solid 10/32 finish, but he also can stack armor to a point where Feated Hex Hunters only do a few points of damage on average rolls, so that was going to be my best bet.

I got the first round and ran up. Stacked where possible and tried to at least pack the armor on the side of the board I felt Brett would attack and would be shooting at with Rav's. Brett did as I expected and killed 2 Arm20 Gators from that Unit . T2 I revived a Gator from that unit in charge range of his Gators (Ashen Vael, Tenacity, Dirge = Silly) and one Hex Hunter Unit. I managed to kill 1 Gator and 2 Hex Hunters. I stacked the Arm and engaged where possible. I left a Snapper right at the back of my zone to stop Brett Scoring and left another (plus some Gators) near the Objective. I knew this would be the big turn. Brett would feat and try and take off both Gator Units, if he didn't I was in with a chance, if he did I'd be buggered. So, the evil Gators went first and killed one Gator, damaging another. Beth Feated, threw of a few spells taking out another Gator. The Right Hand Side Hex Hunters managed to remove another 2 Gators leaving 1 left (on about 3 HP) with the help of a DeathStalker. The Ravagores removed the rear Snapper and the other Deathstalker ran into the zone to score Brett a point. The 2nd unit of HH's failed their terror test giving me a chance. Finally Belth ran to score a point on the Objective too, 0-2 down, not good.

So, I was up the creek but still in with a chance. I pushed back with Maelok killing a Gator and feating to catch the rest of my force to allow me to try and kill stuff. The Wrastler Ran into the back scoring zone to try and prevent Brett Scoring again while the Turtle went to shoot some Hunters/Gators. I'd brought another Gator Back to life who went and ate the Death Stalker who'd scored in my zone while the other member of his unit killed a couple of HH's. The left hand Gators went into the Hex Hunters but I'd also put some into the Gators in the middle to help protect Maelok and remove the Crocs. I killed a few HH's and left the Crocs on 1 damaged member left. Finally instead of just moving a Snapper into Bretts zone to score a point, I moved him down the flank to threaten next turn. Sightly annoyed when I realised I'd done that.

Brett pushed on, removing the Gators on the right and starting on the left hand ones reducing them to 3. He also took a half hearted attempt at Maelok but he was stacking armour and was fairly safe taking the odd point. The Turtle started to take hits though starting to reduce it's effectiveness as I couldn't heal and keep my gators alive. He rallied his Hex Hunters who'd failed the previous turn. I needed to score, and quick this turn. The Gators on the left (along with a Snapper) killed all the HH's in the Zone (leaving 4/5 out of it) meaning I'd score a point this turn which was good. Maelok brought one back alive again and started hitting a Ravagore (Mael was up instead of DP on himself now) taking big chunks out of it allowing the Turtle to finish it off. The Wrastler, and a Snapper killed off the Hunters on the right freeing them up if I got another turn. I had a Snapper try and remove the 2nd Rav from a Zone by a slam but missed (needing 9's, boosted) which would have put us on 2-2.

Brett was starting to lose the attrition war. I'd taken out a Heavy and still had both of mine left. He had half a HH unit, Belth, Beth and a single Rav. He had to go for the Assassination. I had no Fury on Maelok but did have SG on himself putting him at 14/19. He also had to go though a Snapper (and maybe the turtle) to get to Maelok meaning I'd pick up Fury for Transfers on the way though. Anyway, Belth came up and Headbutted Maelok, knocking me down but doing no damage. The Hex's on the left moved up and killed the Snapper blocking the Rav's lane. They also managed to get a single bolt spare onto Mae. Beth put two Gallows though Belth into Maelok eating up some Transfers. I had 2 left at this point, with just a Rav to go, I had a small chance but only about 6 HP on Mael. He went in, first one did big damage and had to be transfered off, 2nd one rolled well and took me to 1/2 left. 3 Fury left on the Beast, Maelok on the floor with 1 HP and 1 Tranfers. We all know how that ended.

2-1 Overall it is then. Brett went onto finish 5-2 and 11th overall. We'd played this match a few times over the last couple of months but this was the closest I'd come. If I'd just managed to score the 1st point with that snapper I wouldn't have had to push so hard and could have tried to play for dice down on a 2-2 with me having more points left in zones, but I felt I had to push a little more due to being 2-1 down and that cost me.

More to follows I guess ...

So, slightly disappointed to lose my run (and slightly outside shot at the titles) I picked myself up and found the following ...

Game 4, James Stark, Cryx, pSkarre, Destruction

Now, League of Legends seems to be fairly popular among the WM/H's scene in the UK and I've been playing lol with James for around 2/3 months prior to D3 launch but had never actually met and talked to him without us playing lol and using Skype. He'd brought the normal troop spam with a Battle Engine and a single slayer to use his jack points. The Scenario didn't really suit either of us but I knew that if he could get to my objectives he could easily take one out, even on bad rolls via the feat. I really dislike playing against Cryx (almost as much as legion) because they always seem to hit really hard and fairly accurate (especially with Skarre) but I do know that a well timed Knockdown feat can buy you a turn and stop them getting the charge on you with Weapon Masters, at which point it's usually game over.

So, Barny it was, didn't want to have to use him again so soon but felt that it had to be done. James won the first turn and everything went forward, I responded in kind trying to protect my units giving him 2 gators from each unit putting Iron Flesh on one unit to help protect from the Raiders charge (some would be out of Dark Guidance range) while making sure I tried to stack armor on models where possible.

T2, Skarre advances forward, Dark Guidance, Feat (the skill level involved here is just mind blowing) and camps. The Army then goes to work. The Slayer eats 2 Crocs, the Ghost Pirates go into gap left by those and deal ~14/15 damage to my Objective and kill 2 more Crocs. The Raiders go into the Iron Fleshed unit and kill 2 while the Battle Engine goes into my Turtle (thought I'd estimated the distance just right, was just wrong). The Raider Captain then went into the Turtle to finish it off. So, my T2, I've lost over half my Gators, one Heavy and I'm more than a little on the backfoot. As they say, play like you've got a pair. I look at the field and need to use my feat now or never, but most things are immune to KD, so, Barny charges though a Free Strike (which misses) by passing though an incorp Ghost Pirate into the Raider Captain. Boost the To hit, off with her head, free Iron Flesh on himself and Feat. I know I'm playing a little balls out here so go for the rather tasty option of camping 5 Fury Gators start to grind back, killing lots of Raiders while the Snapper Swarm kills some pirates and puts Growth on Barny (making sure each one could still be transferred to). The Wrastler starts on the Battle Engine doing a good 10-11 points on it despite the Feat and I sit there waiting. My Bog Trogs have come on and started to hit some Bane Knights at this point which James decides to turn around to fight them rather than push the Gators (which is a good thing).

James decides that without the feat, he can't keep up with my in the grind and tries for a Scenario point failing by a few points as the pirates find it hard to get though the arm of the objective, back up plan is it seems, kill Barny. Gerlak first, misses. Battle Engine, misses it's first attack and connects with the 2nd only to see it bounce off the arm. Skarre at this point has 11 Focus and a charge lane to Barny, so he decides to take the chance. Before we start to roll we do quick maths and figure out he should do it with a focus or two to spare. Dice start rolling and Barny takes anything below 5 damage, anything above gets transferred. Once the dust has settled, Barny is bruised, transferless and alive by 3 damage boxes. Average Dice to lie it seems (well, some will spike, some will roll low, you take the lows, transfer the spikes and it's not undo able to live). Barny stands up, picks up his axe and puts it down her middle.

3-1 and back on track. So, that's day 1, 3-1 and I'd have taken that before the start of the day. I wanted 4-3, anything else was a bonus so one more win tomorrow and I'd have at least achieved my imposed minimum. Before we left that evening for a Curry the Draw went up ... remember the whole Epic Flail Story with Brett? Well, I was now going to be playing my 2nd team mate of the weekend, Marc Williams. We'd been in the same car on the way down, would be on the way back home and one of us was going to crush the other in the morning. We spent the evening joking about it and came to the conclusion we'd both use our "worst" lists in the morning to get them out the way and give us a clear pick of casters in the other 2 games. Calaban vs Vindi was coming up.

Game 5, Marc Williams, Menoth, Vindi, Diversion

So, once again I'd played this list a few times, hence I'd like to think I had a fair amount of input into it. Marc gave me the first turn allowing me to really push up the field. My Gator unit once again went to defend my flag knocking that I could bring on the Bog Trogs to either support them or help me clear Marcs objective. The Wrastler and Snapjaw went right to kill stuff along with some Snappers while the Turtle stayed central with Calaban to help defend him. Marc pushed foward, Errants into my lines, Zealots to attack my flag, ForgeGuard to defend his with a Reckonner advancing towards both flags to help out if needed. Marc made one mistake all game, and unfortunately for him it was here. He put no magic on the Jacks, I had a chance!

My T2 I advanced my Spitter and shot at a Reckonner. The plan wasn't to kill him, it was just to hit, I'd catch a Wrack in the blast, kill it and then that'd blow up killing lots, well that was the plan anyway. So, boost to hit, tripple 1. Joy! Direction 2, not towards the Wrack, Distance 1? JOY! I clipped it. Boosted the damage to make sure and boom! It took out 3 Choir members, a Vassal and most important A&H. The main point of that is that without A&H the only magic weapon on the left was Vindi so my Feralgeist could just sit on my flag all day and defend it forever. I started on the Errants killing 6ish of them, along with a few dwarfs and that was that. I knew that the Wrastler could get charged by 2/3 Dwarfs but the forest they were in would stop more getting too him ...

Well, that was the idea anyway, I kinda forgot that they could just advance and get 5 into him, along with 2 into Snapjaw. However the dice weren't fantastic and the total damage was only about 15-20 points between the two beasts. Some Errants charged into some Snappers and removed both from Calabans battle group (the decent dice were here) while the Zealots mini feated, walked out of combat and threw bombs killing 2 gators, really hurting a 3rd. It wasn't as damaging as Marc had hoped, but now was time to try and score a point. I used Snapjaw (with Carnivore) to trample and kill 5 Dwarfs, the Wrastler killed 2 and Calaban shot another giving me Marc flag, I then took a risk and ran my ghost up into Marcs zone to grab a point. The remaining Snapper and turtle, along with Wrong Eye took out the last few errants meaning that Calaban was now all but safe from assassination (Stealth vs Reckonners is ace). Marc needed to push hard now and now I'd moved the geist to score a point he could try and kill Gators/Trogs to try and score a point back. The right Reckonner along with the Dwarfs double teamed Snapjaw and down went the Gator while the Zea's killed another Gator and a few trogs. The 2nd Reckonner advanced to another Gator but missed his attack.

This would now be a simple win, I'd just need to slam one of the Reckonners out of the way and I'd be able to advance my last unengaged Gator into the zone, kill 3 Dwarfs and win the game. I started on the Dwarfs, killing all 3 with my Carnivored Wrastler in a mass Trample. The Turtle was next, he went into the Reckonner and missed. Awesome. New plan, I used my Bog Trogs to free up the other gator by killing Zea's and he ran around the Reckonners melee range and into the zone, 2-0 win on Scenario.

So, 4-1 after 5 games and word from the top tables was that we had 3 people left undefeated, there was a chance we'd only get 1 more round in, which at this point, I could easilly live with.

    More Soons

Snapper spam! I'd love to hear more about your thoughs on them. How do you handle all the fury? Maelok in particular seems to run very hot.

A Quick Update. Work got busy and in all fairness I've kinda forgotten what happened in the last two games.

Game 5 - Pat Vance, Legion, Saeryn, Incursion.

Not the best matchup in the world but I knew that he had to use Saeryn to avoid being locked in Game 7, plus the fact that I'm a melee army always meant he was going to pick him, so I thought I might as well use Maelok and try my tricks, at worst I'd be able to have a full pick R7.

Long Story Short, He ran, I ran. He Charged/Feated and killed a few Gators. I counter Feated, ran my entire army though his (bar a few models) and killed the support. This is always a neat little trick and usually catch's people off guard. So, I end my T2 with a Gatorman in Melee with his Caster. He however took the free strike, I missed, he started to grind out stuff and scored a point. I managed to fight back pretty hard, and over the next 2/3 turns we took chunks out each others army, only my armies tougher. Dice down approaching I had a Wrastler, 4/5 Gators (different units), a Snapper (or 3), Turtle and a Feral alive, he had an Angel and Ravagore on 1-1 points. I moved up to kill the Rav, but in doing so meant I'd put Maelok about 11" away from the Angel. I realized what I'd done and tried to block the charge lane (or at least make it free strike heaven). Saeryn managed to use the Repulsion to move some stuff away and threw some daggers into Maelok putting him down to 12ish HP. Angel used Repulse, charged, boosted both and got me.

Slightly disappointed when I was on top but I'd rolled well that game, and in a bad matchup did OK. So, not too disapointed, 4-2. Pat went on to finish 6-1, so, go him.

Game 7 - Dave Payton, Menoth, Harby, Flag to Far.

So, I've been playing with Dave on LOL along with Jimmy (game4). So we settled down and got it on. This was the 2nd reinforcement scenario so it was time to see what happened. I took Barny to shut down his millions of Reckonners (had at least 2, if not 3 in every list), plus with only 1 book if he took a list without it I could use Barny to counter.

I was never going to score a point in this game, especially when I had, in effect, one less turn of moving, and this was reinforced by Dave winning to go first. He moved forward, and set up for the following turns. I pushed up, made sure to put most of my force near the flags on my side to play defensive with just one gator unit pushed to the right to give him some issues, especially once the flanking gators showed up. Dave pressed on but rolled bad on his damage dice when it mattered taking out just a single Gatorman with about 6/7 Errant Charges. Dave also brought on his flanking Zealots (UA+Saxon) and mini feated failing to kill Gators with bombs, he also feated. I brought on my Flanking force using the Swamp Gobbers to smoke block LoS the Gators. Barny moved up (well, to one side) and feated (no book), to mean that I wasn't going to be getting charged much T3 either. My Spitter moved up and shot into the Hammer Dwarfs, killing one and spreading acid into 5 more.

This started off the Grind, Over the next few turns we both realized that neither of us was going to allow the other to score and it'd come down to assassination or Tertiary conditions. So, we both started camping a little (IF+SG on Barny, living in a swamp pit, Dave with 6/7 Focus on Harby) and just kept the grind up. I got lucky with Dave charging my Wrastler with a full Reckonner, he did the assault shot did about 10 damage, then he ran out of time before doing any more damage. I then threw the Jack into Holt and his elf, killing them both. It also moved the Jack into the middle of the board away from the zones. We both knew time was all but up, Dave put Harby into some Gators, started Cataclysming/swinging into Gators to try and reduce them to half Strength. He just failed leaving 3 alive. Dice Down and I'd won on tertiary conditions.

I'd finished about 10 points up on Dave within the flags so Harby's last attempt was doomed to failed. Enjoyed the game though

    5-2.

    So, finishing?

    8th

8th, in a 128 player event with Minions. I managed to pick up best in faction to book. Paul Mansfield (another Gator player who lives not to far from me) also went 5-2 but his SoS wasn't as strong as mine putting him in the late teens. I was the top finishing 5-2 player with SoS33, players in 5-7 has less SoS than me which was slightly annoying, but never mind.

I don't think I'd have beaten Brett, I should have beaten Pat but made mistake. So, seems minions, the only non-real faction left aren't too bad at all

Awesome write-up. Easy and fresh to read. All necessary things covered but mostly interesting are the lists you brought to the battle. Congrats on 8th and I would have loved to watch the games in order to learn more about the Gators as it is sometimes kinda hard to imagine what exactly happened with distances and things in battreps without pics.
I cannot wait 'til this girl is another man's problem.
