a question about offensive aoe's (mainly rift)

Hi guys

If I use rift from Strakhov am I able to not target a unit and just put it down on the table? or does there need to be something to target? Also apply the same question to the gun carriages heavy cannons.

You must target a model.

It follows the same rules as any other AOE attack. You target a model, you measure range, if in range you roll to hit and deviate if missed, if out of range you place the template at max range and roll for deviation.
