Default Year of the Elf is done, now comes Year of the Troll!

    Greetings all

Just dropping by to publicly announce my intent that having now completed (roughly) 13 months of competitive play purely with Retribution, the year of the Elf has now passed. From this point onwards up until the end of Lock and Load next year (I hope to be able to make the next one too!) every competitive tournament that I play in will be played only with Trollbloods.

On top of that, my first mission is going to be to show all the doom sayers out there that the Mountain King can work! I plan to post up regular battle reports (starting with my first game back with my Trolls this Wednesday coming) tracking my progress in coming up with a list where I feel that the Mountain King not only performs, but performs well. I hope that the community will follow my progress and similarly, I hope that my play test matches will help to change some minds about the Mountain King.

Bring on the Year of the Troll!

Baka holds out hope for the Mountain King, as its yet another huge thing to put the Winter Trolls animus on.

Hardly my new Kriel, Trollbloods are my original faction and even though I've been somewhat quiet on here the past few months I still regularly read what goes on

Hey don't be hating on the Winter Troll! :P
Nah but seriously when I look at the MK with Gunny the Winter Troll will definitely be a consideration

While he didn't win Masters at Lock and Load Bakaryu was in the top 16 that advanced. He has also done well with Trolls in Europe on numerous occaisions and if I remember correctly he won the Welsh Open 2010 with Borka. He has credentials of an experienced tourney player that has and can place very well. If he thinks something can work, it usually does. Plus he probably will put the winter troll animus on it

I was mostly going for a Scrummcast joke, where Baka's general approach to unusual tactical problems and match up was to throw more winter troll animus at the problem.

Yup yup, but since I have no real credentials of my own (other than an overwhelming addiction to Trollbloods) I like tossing out others.

I'm absolutely horrible with names, but I think I talked to Bakaryu a bit at L&L, while he was borrowing some cards and Hypnos from a friend of mine for the tournament. (Assuming he is who I'm thinking of, that is.) If so, yeah, he 's pretty knowledgable. I look forward to seeing what he does with the Trolls, and how he applies the MK to someone's face.

Close but not quite Dallas, I won the Welsh Open in 2010 with Trollbloods.

And Sobek if you were the guy who was with Bill then yes I remember speaking with both of you for a little while before I had to dash off. Similarly I am terrible with names!

I'm still in my 'Decade of the Trolls'.
    I'll switch in 2015. Maybe...

I don't think too many of us were saying that the Mountain King cannot work, or does not, hell - you can win games with a bunch of skinners. My issue, and I think the same for a lot of others, is that he does not work well straight out of the box without a fair bit of support. It is a huge model and costs a ton of points and a lot of money. For that much overall investment I would prefer a model that works pretty well as is and then gets better with support, or one that works really really good as is and has rules that limit the amount of support it can get. I absolutely don't like it being on the low end with the expectation of having a bunch of support.

I prefer something like the Cygnar colossal which is good straight out of the box with little support needed - but that gets better with support added.

The Mountain King seems to be a bit of a niche model, but I am not sure it's niche is altogether very unique.

But good luck in the tournies! Good to see people playing Trolls.

Welcome back, I still remember the beating you gave me on vassel very well. Good to see you playing a "real" faction again . Just playing, I always have to mess with people that play with elves, its kind of like playing with barbies :P

I am sticking with the trollbloods for a while myself and look forward to some GREAT write ups and strats from you. Although I am very tempted to go back to Cygnar, I am receiving a Stormwall, Storm Strider and 3pic Nemo for my birthday coming up on the 21st of this month

I am however the only troll at my game store (pun intended) so I will be keep on supporting them for the time being

Baka, good to hear you're really coming back to the trolls. It's a nice place to be, especially from the sounds of how fluff is going to turn around for the Trolls. Hunters Grim, Mountain King, all the good stuff.

It's going to be an exciting time for sure. I was truly disappointed when Baka told me he wasn't carting his Trolls over for Lock and Load, but alas, nothing I could do. It will be good to see them placing well in the UK again next year though.

Wales is not part of the UK. It's largely just a buffer zone for possible invasions, which is why they put Torchwood there

Sweetness. Welcome back on the kriel side... I myself keep jumping between Ret and Kriels. I should really stick to one faction to brush back up completely but Ret is so new and shiny...Arg.

Anyways, looking forward for your MK reports along with everyone elses as well!

Not to derail this discussion, but what did your Borka list look like at the Welsh open prey tell?

Now come forth to Vassal so that my Galleon can flatten your Mountain King! Alternatively my Mountain King can flatten your Hyperion.

Bear in mind this was before the Forces of Hordes book was out:

    Max Fennblades (8)

    Max KSB plus UA (5)
    Min Champions (6)
    Fell Caller (3)

If there was any real reason to change it, it would be to try to fit in the Fennblade UA which is just simply too good to leave out.

The Min Champion unit was always in the list purely to serve as a bodyguard for Borka as well as to be part of the third wave of attackers alongside the Mauler and Horthol.

Hordes of infantry can be a bit rough in a timed tournament setting, unfortunately. At least for me, anyway.

I actually found running that Borka list was very easy, as I never committed more than one or two units at a time using a wave mentality

As memory serves, I think only in one game did I ever need the turn extension.

My eMadrak Masters list had like 42 infantry models in it. You learn to play fast... Also Borka's tier tends to run heavy infantry so it's a lower model count...

Technically, there was a Torchwood in London as well... until it got destroyed by cybermen.

Wait, this is the trollbloods forum.

Welcome back to trolls Baka, I look forward to reading about what you'll do with the king.
