    Default Ravyn's Laser Light Show!

Okay, I've been sitting on this idea for a few days now and figured I'd at least contribute something to this forum by tossing it out there. (For all I know it'll be ignored and languish in obscurity, but who really cares about that? :P )

When Hyperion was first spoiled, AJ the Ronin and I ended up tossing around ideas for a Hyperion/AFG spam list, first at 100 points (with 4 AFGs and 4 Hyperions), and then a 50-point version with 2 AFGs and 2 Hyperions, most likely using Ravyn for access to Snipe and her feat. The 100 point version will likely only ever exist in proxies and Vassal, but I do have 2 AFGs and plan to get at least 1 Hyperion, so the 50-point version seems somewhat feasible to put onto the tabletop, but I ended up coming up with this variation:

Ravyn's Laser Light Show (50 points)

    Ravyn (-6)
    -Manticore (8)
    -Manticore (8)
    -Hyperion (18)
    Arcantrik Force Generator (10)
    Arcantrik Force Generator (10)
    Arcanist (1)
    Arcanist (1)

I've got everything for this list except Hyperion (which I plan to get as soon as it comes out), so I could actually field it. I've always been fond of taking Manticores with Ravyn, as Covering Fire and Veil of Mists offer some good board control, and I'd often take the AFG at 50 points as a "third jack" that could benefit from Snipe and her feat. This version just takes out the infantry and puts in Hyperion and a second AFG to make a wall of metal and laser fire. The Covering Fire templates can help screen the Hyperion much like Stormwall can do, while the two Manticores and Hyperion can smash down most (if not all) other heavies in melee. This version has room for two Arcanists to keep all of the machines running despite enemy ranged attacks, and can deal out Concentrated Power to the Myrmidons, as well as stretching Ravyn's focus even further, if necessary.

It's probably not a highly competitive list -- any ranged unit can deal out more attacks to better exploit Snipe and Ravyn's feat than the myrmidons, and anything with Stealthed battlegroups or even a LOT of heavy armor (like Karchev) can just weather the storm to get into melee. But it does look like it's a fairly fun option for casual play, and I suspect it'd fare well against the more balanced casual lists I've seen.

Haha, at the very least it would be an amusing game! Lasers here, lasers there, lasers lasers everywhere!

I can't really comment on any theoretical competitive viability. But by the sounds of it you're not really looking to "compete" with it, so there you go. You should let us know how it goes.

I'd only need one more AFG after I build the Wrath of the Titans list, but then I would have 2 AFGs and that's just not happening.

I've been tossing around something similar using Ravyn's tier list:

    Ravyn (-6)
    > Hyperion (18)
    > Hyperion (18)
    Max MHSF plus UA (10)

If I could build a list that I think would seriously work then I would own two Hyperions.

But then again I am the guy who bought three boxes of kriel warriors, three KW unit attachments and nine caber throwers for pMadrak's tier list.

I'll probably end up throwing in a Banshee or Hydra or something instead of the second AFG, but I think I might have to try this...

So I finally got a chance to try it!

Unfortunately, it's a bit hard to tell how well it did -- basically, I think that I wasn't nearly aggressive enough with it. Talking it over with my brother, we decided to set up the situation as a battle where Ravyn was taking some of the Retribution's new toys out on a field test by attacking a nearby Tharn village, since my brother had some new huts and such he wanted to use for terrain. He won the die roll and went first, which meant his forces were crossing the centerline of the table on the first turn, and I didn't get much past my deployment zone. Fortunately, we weren't playing a scenario, although he jokingly threatened me with Killbox. :P

Still, my army managed to acquit itself somewhat by killing the Celestial Fulcrum (that think HAD to die after setting Ravyn on fire), an entire unit of Tharn Ravagers (plus UA and WA), and Ghetorix. Amusingly, the AFGs may have done more than Hyperion did -- one of my AFGs got a momentum shot off on Ghetorix, knocking him down so my Manticore could kill him in one turn.

On the other hand, his Tharn Bloodtrackers managed to kill one of my AFGs, leaving Ravyn exposed and in the open, and the Bloodtrackers and a Gnarlhorn were able to finish her off before Hyperion could wade in and kill them.

I really need to get in more practice with the list -- I've already challenged my brother to a rematch, at least. :P But it does feel like Hyperion would work better in a more combined-arms list with some screening infantry to help tie up threats. On the other hand, I still think this list could be a blast to pull out at the LGS at times!

I saw in the Cygnar forum somebody made what they were calling the "Hoth List" which was a 6 warjack-point warcaster, 2 stormwalls and 2 stormstriders at 50 points. I'd be interested to see if our answer to that list is any good. 2 hyperions and 2 AFGs comes out to 56, so you could use anybody but Garryth and Vyros2 with it (Kaelyssa could take an arcanist I guess). I'm not gonna throw $500 at it, but if somebody else wanted to I'd love to see it!

Keep trying it, I love seeing low model count armies kick *** and take names. It'd probably be worth it just to see your opponent's face when you get your army out ("You have how many huge bases???")

Interesting you should mention Kaelyssa. She might be one of the better options to run that list.

I would totally run dual Hyperions. pVyros with 2 Hypers plus Sentinals and Arcanists. Heck ya! Time to go get a second job.
