I've warmed up to the Cannoneer considerably. The big revelation for me was understanding that it isn't a long-range bombardment piece, but rather a close-support hybrid beast. Don't be afraid to throw an Enrage down on the Cannoneer and have it charge in and beat face in melee. I particularly like fielding them in pairs. Rush feels much less necessary when you have enough ranged attacks to force the enemy to close to deal with your ranged threats. Incidentally, the Karax start to come into their own with a 2x Cannoneer setup. Their snails pace is less of an issue as you aren't forced to cover as much ground, and you'll enjoy having a big tarpit that for the Cannoneers' purposes may as well not exist, between Ranked Attacks and Girded letting you sling AOEs into the middle of scrums with impunity. If you have a caster that can boost their attack value at all (e.g. Rasheth) both the Karax and Cannoneers will shine more in melee.

What's funny is that with the Raider they no longer have to take that close support role, and they're surprisingly competent when they can afford to aim. Just this weekend I had a game against Vyross3 abruptly end on turn two when he stepped into Rasheth's CTRL range: Blood Mark, Feat, and two boosted Siege Gun shots put him down. One of those shots would have missed if I'd had to advance, but effective RAT 6 got it done.

The above is my personal opinion, and in no way should be taken as representative of the overall Skorne community. Even when I claim otherwise.
Skorne on date ... when did Primal Mk I hit again?

True! I still like them in midfield personally, where they can threaten back-rank casters with ranged and more close-in threats (mainly enemy heavies, because with 2x Cannoneer + Raider, there's probably no room for a dedicated melee heavy) with charges, instead of hanging back bombarding mid-table. I feel like it's slightly suboptimal given their credible melee performance. But you're right, the Raider definitely gives them another tool to expand their role!

Don't forget that adding the extoller to your far striking cannon alleviates any targeting issues.

Not necessarily, it ignores forests and clouds and grants Magic Weapon. Other models can still block LoS.

shoulda said "alot" instead of "any". It still covers alot of bases, like incorporeal and such.

as to the OP's friends statement of a 1 trick pony, he just doesnt know what he is saying. the aforementioned statements of Skorne dominance are true but just a sliver of what is Skorne.

Yep. That particular bag belongs to the Shamanator(TM) Ghosteyelesssight FTW! For eliminating key solos there is no substitute

Yeah, I almost always bring one for each Cannoneer. I started doing it for the Eyeless Sight, but holy crap can those dames light up enemy warbeasts! The combination of Ghost Shot and Far Strike makes it very hard to hide, and once they've soaked up a few souls they're putting out effective boosted POW 18-ish shots! Every time I pop a Carnivean with one I feel a little dirty. But like, in a good way .

Not sure what you mean by the Cannoneer soaking up souls: I know the Extollers can guide souls to other models, but I think only AGs etc.

He's talking about the Extollers collecting souls and using them to boost to-hit and damage roles.
