Default Immune to AOE damage, also immune to AOE crit effects?

Hi! I'm a really new player, so bear with me if this is really obvious.

I was playing my third game yesterday, and my opponent (playing Gorten) cast Solid Ground on most of his force. In my turn, I managed a crit with my Mule. Since Solid Ground makes the models immune to AOE damage, and Critical Devastation is resolved "instead of suffering a normal damage roll", would that mean they suffer the effects of the crit?

    1. Solid Ground doesn't make immune to damage caused by AOEs, it makes immune to blast damage.

    2. the normal damage from a mules shot would be blast damage, but since the models are thrown instead it isn't blast damage and the models will suffer it.

Also, if you were hit by a critical fire AOE, the models protected by Solid Ground would still suffer the continuous fire effect even though they would not take any damage from the blast itself.
Just to point out that even if you were immune to the blast damage, you could still suffer other effects of the attack.

There is no such thing as AOE damage.....

Blast damage is just a damage type, much like fire damage or corrosion damage. Some effects in the game cause blast damage without being AOE's, and many AOE's cause damage that is not blast damage.... It is not actually connected to AOE's as such, and indeed Critical Devastation does not cause blast damage. The only place where Blast damage and AOE's are connected is the special rule that models not directly hit, but under an AOE template when nothing else is specified, suffer a blast damage roll with ½ the POW of the weapon.

Solid Ground makes models immune to 'Blast Damage', and since the damage from Critical Devastation is not blast damage, models will suffer the full effect of the crit.

    Welcome!

And no worries about confusing the terms, but you will find that many of the rules use specific keywords (like "blast damage") and that will most often help make it clear what the interactions are.
