Default Warmachine models that would be great for the RPG

I got to thinking about what models from the wargame would be the most useful for RPG players. Many typical fantasy models would work fine in the IK, but not too many fantasy models have the kind of firearms or mechanika type equipment that is iconic in the IK. So here's my list of helpful Warmachine models for use in the IKRPG:

    Winterguard
    Sea Dog Crew
    Mechanithralls

Short list, I know. Obviously not a comprehensive list meant to cover any possible encounter. BUT!

Winterguard are a good proxy for any generic "military unit with a gun." Obviously they're Khador themed in appearance, but who doesn't use "stands for" models in their RPG games, right?
Sea Dogs are great models to represent any non-military group. They're variously armed, so you get the whole rag-tag feel, they don't have uniforms, etc.
Mechanithralls are great IK-themed zombies. Obviously there's more to the Undead in the Iron Kingdoms than Cryx, and your 2 bit Necromancer operating independantly out of some abandoned manor house will probably be simply raising skeletons and zombies and leaving things at that as opposed to running a full-fledged chop shop/meat house complete with steam augmentations, but if you DM much I'm sure you have a pretty big handful of skeletons and zombies already at your disposal.

I tried to keep to units that have obvious Iron Kingdoms ties - what with guns, steam-stuff... Feel free to critique and add your own to the list.

Just open the Mercenaries book and behold the potential .

Steelhead Riflemen/Halberdiers/Cavalry - Perfect for town guards, general brigands, and, of course, Mercenary companies.
Kayazy - Similar to Steelhead, though perhaps better suited towards brigands, ruffians and low-lifes.
Pretty Much the Entire Solos Section - Self explanatory, covers a huge range of character models and options.
Talons/Vanguards/Buccaniers/Mules/etc - Perfect for representing themselves or other low-cost Labor and Steamjacks.

erm, I think - all of them.

Probably covers the range of models from Warmachines and Hordes that would be "great" for an IK RPG.

Not really sure where you're going with this thread?

For myself, I was thinking the PoM Vigilant, with just a few magnets to make the shield removable, could serve double duty in both WM (as a vigilant) and IKRPG (as a light labourjack). Might be able to carve off the menofix and spikes as well, though it's not necessary for a stand in, or if playing a Protectorate based campaign.

I'm not familiar with the contents of grind, but I know there are heavy and light chassis in there, with a selection of arms, so perhaps that might be a source of jacks/jack parts for conversions.

Especially right now, since Grind is $25 in the Summer Sale.

I recently picked up what amounts to a 50 point MacBain theme force as IKRPG NPCs; Steelhead Halberdiers for town guard, Croe's Cut throats for thugs, Devil Dogs for rival adventurers and a bunch of Mercenary characters as different NPCs. I've also got a list of Khador minis planned for my more specific campaign, but I figure that pile of mercs should be good enough for most adventures

Well, you could start with these models, and then move on to these models...

Yeah. Clearly all of the WM and Hordes line are great. I'm focusing more on miniatures that would have a more general utility, and that specifically relay the Iron Kingdoms feel. In other words, say you're an experienced GM who already has a pretty thorough collection of miniatures - what are a few models or units you could pick up that would help to visually convey the Iron Kingdoms? I doubt too many people have enough money laying around to simply pick up the entire line of Warmachine and Hordes - let alone the time set aside to assemble them, let alone paint them.

Don't forget Alexia's Risen models for generic undead. I think they still come in blister packs.

I'd say a unit of trenchers, winter guard, steelhead halbardiers, Alexia and the risen, either mechanithralls or revenant pirates, a unit ofpressgangers, add a couple of merc warjacks and most of the merc solos from the warmachine range.
From hordes I'd say either a unit of kriel warriors or trollkin scouts, a unit of praetorian swordsmen, everblight striders, tharn ravagers and a unit of farrow brigands. Throw in some shredders, a random warpwolf, a couple of other warbeasts, Pendrake a a few other randomly chosen solos.

That list became a lot longer than I intended... but if you get all the above, I'd say you can play most styles of games in western Immoren. If you're not willing to buy and paint that many models, then pick according to your campaigns needs. I do consider the Merc and Circle ranges the most overall useful, Mercs contain a variety of troops and solos from a lot of races and the Circle warbeasts represent generic monsters in the woods.

Any of the guys out of your factions are great providing the adventure is in that territory. Having a bar brawl with off duty trenchers makes since in cygnar for example. Also it would do a lot to express a sense of militarism as a whole setting up lots of models. Using cygnar models in menoth breaks the immersion to those that play both games, unless that part of the story. My only issue with buying any models for the rpg is the base size. I use 1 inch hex mat and the bases are 30mm. Its workable but its very annoying.

An Ogrun Bokur for occasional flavor could work out.

Might consider some Temple Flameguard and Zealots too - the Flameguard could pass for general guardsmen in a pinch, and everywhere has zealots/insurgents. Especially in a Llaelese campaign.

I would say specifically the alternate female journeyman warcaster. The IK Merc Caster works good.

I would grab the merc jacks, specially the pirates since most of them are converted labor jacks you can use.
