Default Is the Throne of Everblight worth it?

I love the model, the rules look decent enough to justify it's points, but do you guys run one in 35 point lists and if you do with what WL's?

Half the fun for me is an interesting looking force on the table, well maybe even 2/3 of the fun if it's all painted up nice too. It is certainly an interesting, unique looking model too. It is also nice to at least be competitive with the force so that win or lose it was a good game where the opportunities were there to win.

So what is the general consensus on this thing? Basically I would guess by including one you are running with 1 less heavy beast? So typically 35 pts would be a Heavy, a light, a lesser or two, the Throne, and a cheap unit? In Warmachine I almost always run 2 heavy jacks at 35 pts. With the Throne in the list I would assume this isn't going to happen with 2 heavy beasts? You would lose out somewhere if you did, no unit worth speaking of, not enough other lighter warbeasts?

Most of the time i only play it with 2 or 3 warlocks and even then i have a hard time playing it at 50 points. I haven't been to impressed with it outside of gimicky lists and in most cases, i'd rather just take another scythean then the throne.

I sometimes take it with Beth and Rhys (fun games) it's more of an anti infantry piece than anything. But it gets beaten up too easily.

It's ok, but one is all I'm every likely to have. It has a few warlocks that it's decent with like pThagrosh, but it's neither a power piece nor a lump of coal. Just ok. Definetely not like Storm Striders where you can use two of them as a mobile firebase.

If you love the model, the rules are good enough you can make lists to get it to feel good for a list. I've recently got mine painted so I can start testing things out with it, and after a half dozen or so games so far, I like it a lot with Thags1, a bit with Thags2 (Both largely for the same reason, it's armor / health can get really sweet between Spiny and either Death Shroud and Dragons Blessing, and it offers a good blocker for Thagrosh himself). I like it with Bethayne (it makes a great Eruption Target, gains from the feat, and is okay with Ashen Veil). I liked it with Vayl2 as well a bit, fair arc node target, passable with Refuge, and can help with infantry. I still want to try it with Rhyas and Abby, I don't think it has a home with Saeryn or Vayl1, but haven't tried either, and I'm still trying it out with Kallus, but it's fine so far, but I could see a unit doing better (Dark Guidance and Ignite on it is pretty sweet, trio of POW 17's can really hurt a heavy, kill lights, and rip apart any unit).

I like it. I find it fills a very unique roll in that it has an endurance level nearing that of a warbeast but it doesn't need any fury management, and it can cast spells. I agree that it's more an anti-infantry peice, though it's had its moments where I've had it charge something with full corpse tokens and unload 3 boosted attacks with a damage buff for some overall very respectable damage (for a non-warbeast anyways).

Mostly I find it's a good model to take in the place of infantry where you want more beast-level durability.

I also find that it demands a significant investment of resources to bring it down. Moreso than a beast because the high armor typically causes infantry-grade attacks to have minimal effect, forcing an investment of more than one unit, or a proper heavy to bring one down (unless it's a serious bruiser unit like bane thralls, dawnguard sentinels, etc). If such models are using up their turns and exposing themselves in order to bring down something that isn't a warbeast, then great.

It's like an infantry model that is only threatened by things that threaten a heavy. I like that versatility.

Thanks for the replies, it's nice that it's not all "Doom and Gloom."

I'm seriously looking at fielding one in Week 3 of the local Journeyman League. Should be fun with Lylyth1 between Parasite and her feat.

Kallus and Bethany seem to be the best fit. I run Kallus, Scythean, protector, shredder, Grotesques Full, legionaires full, spawning vessel full. I like getting a ton of incubi on my feat turn.

my favorite casters for the throne are pThagrosh & Kallus. Kallus if you want an offensive throne, pThag if you want a defensive throne.

At 35 I think it's kind of hard to squeeze in. I have been using it as an arc-node for Vayl2 with some pretty hilarious results. It acts as an early game beacon for me to put my upkeeps out and a mid-game Obliteration vector since it can swing in melee against reach troops without it itself being engaged, making it a fantastic node.

I've played one with eThags and a carnivean for skyhigh armour. It's entertaining, and it's a nice LOS blocker for your beasts.

I took the Throne for its first spin last night. Let me begin by saying that I was skeptical. The model artwork isn't really my favorite, and I wasn't really sold on how it's massive base would coincide with a Legion army. Most damning was the question: When Legion does so well with Beasts, why not just take another beast?

I was surprised at its potential, and especially revealing was how functional the Battle Engine remains until it's final hitpoint is removed. Unlike Warbeasts, who start needing babysitting when a spiral drops out, the Throne of Everblight was able to survive even after receiving some attention from the opponent. And there's no fury or CTRL range requirement. In fact, speaking of attention, it actually shrugged off a free strike from a Bronzeback Titan before floating over to harass the enemy WL and burp out the bones of a paingiver.

While a 5" move, or 8" charge is slow by Legion standards, it's really that 4" reach during activation that compensates. And that compensation is adequate. Also, because 4" reach is activation only, it doesn't preclude charging first, and following up with ranged attacks.

I don't think I'll find one in every list, but I am past the hesitation phase of fielding one. If it's a good fit, I'll throw it in, though finding good positioning for the thing is difficult -- On one hand, I want it up the gut so it's massive reach and base can affect the entire board. On the other hand, that base is so massive that if you're not careful you could permanently divide your forces.

I feel I've always gotten good mileage out of squid-pillar whenever I play it. Solid anti-infantry piece.
