Unhappy HELP! I can't decide on my color scheme.

I have had my Retribution stuff for over a few months now, and I really want to paint them up. Unfortunately I really can't decide on what color scheme I want to do. The studio scheme does look nice, but painting white is a real pain, and I don't think I could settle for anything less than super smooth which would drive me insane. Every time I think I have a neat idea another one pops into me head and I think "ooh that would look cool too." I guess the real problem is that I think EVERYTHING could look good on these models so I can't pick which one I think is the best. All the while the studio scheme keeps calling me in the back of my mind, "come on its so easy you don't have to think about what colors to choose they are right here...."

I broke down yesterday and started doing some color swaps on the computer and the problem kept happening. I made more and more and more different schemes and it got to the point where I just had to stop myself.

Here they are, oh decisive denizens of the internet, tell me which one you prefer. Post what scheme you use, of suggest yet another armor/cloth combination that I haven't thought of yet. Also, no yellow armor.

It just keeps going...must fight urge to make more...looks so cool.....

    my favourites:
    1. 3rd in bottom row (awesome, should work with anything)
    2. 3rd in top row (ditto, allows for some grey, rusty jacks)
    3. studio scheme
    4. 4th in bottom row (but i think it wouldn't work too well with jacks)
    5. 1st in bottom row

I'm partial to blue...so the second one or the 8th look really cool to me.

I admit I really dig #4. That one is cool!

This is awesome! I really like the very bottom 2 on the left, and the Orange one in row 3.

What program are you using to swap the colors? If it's free I'll look into this. Otherwise, can / will you make about 1000 more of these? Seriously.

    Holy Kaelyssas, Batman.

Well, there are some pretty good Retdrowbution schemes over in the modelling forum.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the studio scheme. I love my white jacks on the table, but they were NOT easy to paint.

    I like 3, 7, and 9 myself.

Here's a bone to chew, since you obviously are having trouble coming up with alternate schemes - you could do two colours on the armor, some plates one colour, some another.

You can find mine in my sig - grey and black armor, bright green power lines. I quite like the effect, though if I was starting them now I probably would've done black and a light green on the armor.

I use photoshop, which is unfortunately not free, but cheap if you are a student/teacher. I can make some more if you like, what exactly did you have in mind?

So at the moment the voting stands at 3 votes for 1, 3, and 9; 2 votes for 4 and 7, and 1 vote for everything else. That is a pretty even spread, you guys have the same problem that I do!

Keep those votes coming in, this is actually pretty fun and interesting.

I must be an odd bird. My votes go to numbers 10 and 11. My scheme is weird, though, as you can see in my sig, so feel free to dismiss my opinion out of hand.

Actually...10 isn't bad. If you wanted to do a desert elf scheme, I think that would work nicely. The grey in 3 is nicely generic too, but be warned that grey is deceptively difficult to paint.

Anyway, I'll keep agitating for the studio scheme. I think it looks really great and I love the ethereal effect that the white armor brings. I do mix it up by changing the arcantrik glowy bits on a house by house basis. Thus far, it's just blue for Shyeel (which, being the Iosian equivalent of Stark Industries, is most seen) and purple for Vyre. But I do use orange glowy bits for Phoenixes. Some elves just want to watch the world burn.

The one with the light green and the turquoise armor are sick as being ill!!!! MUST COPY!

I painted my Myrms in some kind of Neon Genesis Evangelion EVA-01-style ... black, purple and green. Everyone think's ist über gay and purple does not belong into a warzone but who cares. Disco performs just fine with her colours ...

My favorite is bottom row #3 from the left.
My second choice is top row #3 from the left.
My third choice would be the image Frozencore posted.
They all have a nice amount of subtlety, with the right amount of *pop*. Maybe add in a wee bit of source lighting from the jewel-y thingies on her sword and gun.

I really like No.4 (Orange) as it'd be a nice change from the more commonly accepted schemes.

    Not too shabby.
It is starting to look like we have some of the schemes pulling away from the rest of the pack, but no clear winner yet. Keep those votes coming in!

1.) Dark navy blue armor with cloak from #4
2.) Dark navy blue armor with orange cloak (orange from #4/5)
3.) Black armor with cloak the light green color from #9's armor

I'm looking into gimp right now, I'll try it out in a bit and tell you if it works.

I find it very interesting that the most picked choices are the ones with green in them, but oddly enough not the bright green one.

    I like 3,9 and 10.

The real question you should ask yourself is, what color are my jacks going to be?

To me, this would be the deciding factor.

Very valid point. The jacks are a completely different animal to the infantry models, dominated as they are by large shoulder pads et al.

Already ahead of you, but behind you due to the actual time of my post.

Here are the current leaders with the studio scheme for comparison:

The answer is obvious, isn't it?

Green is naturally superior to every other colour! I now have proof, no one can argue it anymore!

    the green looks awesome.

but I think if you use a brighter blue, it would also look very good.

for the grey to look good, I'd go with a more roughed up look with some metallic paint + rust.

    don't really like the red.

I personally like either the gray or the dark red scheme. I like drab schemes in general (especially for ret) but I think the red looks nice without being blindly colorful like say the aqua and mint green scheme could be.

  36. #36

Voting again for the grey or the red. I would also suggest using some patterns on the jacks like those featured in the latest NQ. Both the red and grey are great colors, but could each use the other color to help break up those large solid color areas.

I'm still partial to the green and blue schemes, myself.

But again, especially when seeing myrmidons all in one colour, I think using two colours looks better. It breaks the model up better and creates more interest, instead of a single slab of colour. Gdaybloke's scheme is a really good example of this, IMO.

Though picking a colour for the power lines that stands out against your armor colour would help a lot, too.

Seeing this thread just as I decided I need to get some Ret painted so I can keep putting off buying that 2nd unit of MHSF and having to assemble them makes me happy.
I personally like the darker ones in general. Would like to play around with variations on those myself. Any chance I could PM you my email and grab the psds with separated layers (at least I'm assuming that's how you've broken the image up)? I promise to post more schemes on the forums :P

personally I like 1, 3, 8, and 11 the best. I have also had my ret for months and havent even primed them yet because I cant, for the life of me, come up with a color scheme that I think will properly work with the shoulders on the myrmidons (i cannot free-hand to save my life). Lately, I have been tossing the idea of a royal blue mixed with gold (for the metal flakes) for my base color.
