so are there trees that only appear in the IK world or do they just have the same ol' run of the ill oaks, maples, and what not?

Most trees are relatively ordinary or at least familiar and would be akin to ones in the real world, albeit there are certainly regional variances. There are some meat-eating trees I would suggest avoiding.

Overall, I think you can probably get by with saying 'it's just a tree'*

I guess you could claim that shadowbranches is a descriptive term rather then a species name, but it's a nice name so I'd say it's cannon...
