    Default Custom Folding Table

Me and a friend are working on building a custom table for Warmachiine/Hordes. We don't want to have to drive up to the game store every time we want to play, so we decided to build a portable table that we can easily move between our houses to play.

Here is a rough sketch plan of what we decided to do:

We kinda got a start tonight on it and here is two edges on one of the halves done so you can see kinda how the trim looks:

I will be posting updates on the table as we progress. Please leave any comments you have for what you like or dislike about it. We can use any criticism we get since this is our first table. If this one turns out good, we might end up making more.

Unfortunately I don't have anything constructive to add at this point, so I will just say this: take lots of pictures and let us know how it goes. I'd like to do something similar for my school's sci-fi club, as several people there are getting into 40K, and hopefully I can get a few to try Warmachine. Anyway, we really need a gaming table.

We will be posting plenty of pictures. Hoping to get some more work done on it today, but if not, there should be some decent pictures of it up here by the end of the week.

What are you using to seal off the open end when the table is folded up?

One thing that may be too late to take into account is the size of your borders. As the design stands right now you will be taking roughly 3" off the playing surface from whatever direction you look at it. I know I made the same mistake on my first couple table frame designs.

You may want to re-design the hinges. That drawing is illogical...

It took me a little while to make sense of them, but I think it's an interesting design to say the least. From what I could figure out it's basically a jointed dowel that moves within a hole depending on what position the table is in. To get the support you would need out of this design I would imagine that you would need one of these hinges every 8" or so and they would probably need to be made from steel. If you have the capabilities to fabricate such parts go for it, I like the outside the box thinking, but you could likely get much more mileage and less headache out of more basic hinges.

Looks to me like he is planning to use concealed barrel hinges:

Barrel hinges could work, I though about using them. They would be nicely hidden.
But if the tables framework is too heavy, the barrel hinges won't hold. The weight of the table will crank the hinges out.
That's why I went for the double scissor/knife hinges that are bolted through the frame to each other.

Oh, I'm with you on that, Pake, but from the illustration, thats what it looked like.

Now if only I could find someone locally that sold the same style you used.
