Default I Boom Boom Room Tournament

Welcome to the first Boom Boom Room Tournament!

What is the Boom Boom Room Tournament you ask? Well a couple of people on Vassal decided it would be fun to run a small and relaxed tournament there and so we have decided to give it a go.

The first try is gonna have 8 people only with entry by invite only. If things go well, we might expand the format.

Fow now the 8 lucky ones are:

    acsmedic - ACSMedic - Trollbloods
    Arkio - Cygnus - Mercs
    arkol - Guy - Trollbloods
    Fenrisulfr - Fenrir - Minions
    ManInTheMachine - Joe - Khador
Ptotherice - Price Stallard - Mercs
Rabid Bunny - rabid - Cryx
    ZealousJohnny - Johnny - Menoth

The factions were just intended factions to play, you can still change them.

    Now rules:
Rules will be pretty simple, SteamRoller2012 with the following specifications:

Entry Fee. willingness to have fun. Compliance with Page 5

Prize: Bragging Rights by the truckload.

1 35pts list with no unused points
No models from Colossals or Gargantuans.
No round or turn time limits
No scenarios with: reinforcements, radial or flank deployment.

Everyone should now post their list here, and once everyone does so, I'll roll scenarios (it will be one from group 1 2 and 3) for each round and then pairings.

If at all possible I'll do those rolls on Vassal with at least 2 other players as witnesses and then post the results here.

As an added bonus, if you wanna do battle reports, take pictures of your games, do pre and post game commentary and so one, then by all means do it. It will only add to the experience.

Any questions or things I may have forgotten ask away.

Good luck, and above all, have fun!

Alright everyone has check in. I'm gonna make the rolls online in a few. ACSMeci and Fenrir are with me as witnesses.

For purposes of pairing people up I'm gonna number players so rolls will be made in this order:

    1- ACSMedic
    2- Cygnus
    3- Guy
    4- Fenrir
    5- Joe
    6- Price Stallard
    7- rabid
    8- Johnny

  13. #13

    Just rolled for scenarios:

round 1: Incursion (the one with the 3 flags and one pops out)
round 2: Supply and Demand (2 zones with fuel caches inside)
    round 3: Overrun

  14. #14

    Default

Rolled 4d6 for each player, highest roller plays with second hiest, third with fourth, and so on.

    Rolls were:

    1 - 15
    2 - 9
    3 - 19
    4 - 15
    5 - 14
    6 - 16
    7 - 18
    8 - 16

Meaning there's no need for unties and thus the pairings are:

    acsmedic/ACSMedic(Trollbloods) VS Fenrisulfr/Fenrir(Minions)
    Arkio/Cygnus(Mercs) VS ManInTheMachine/Joe(Khador)
    arkol/Guy(Trollbloods) VS Rabid Bunny/rabid(Cryx)
    Ptotherice/Price Stallard(Mercs) VS ZealousJohnny/Johnny(Menoth)

Seems like Fenrir and ACSMedic don't wanna waste any time and so their game is already being set up.

Here are some thoughts from the players:

ACSMedic - well... against these guys I have only played once... so I do believe that it is up to the long riders to carry the day for me.

Fenrirsulfr - shooty trolls i'm going to dig in all the time

So obviously both players have deep, elaborate, complex and well thought plans.

Also we've hit first obstacle on the tournament. How to choose maps for the games? After a brief discussion we decided the best option was to pick a random manageable map and everyone plays the same map on that round. Sounds fair yes?

So map used is: Engine East (under the NEW tab)

    Game 1 round up.

Alright Fenrir here going to round things up i took some screen shoots as things unfolded, mainly after each turn, so after i finished complaining about guy picking a map I couldn't dig in on, we rolled to pick turns and I ended up going second his trolls deployed followed by the piggies.

    http://i.imgur.com/SON58.jpg
Here's everyone happily deployed waiting for slaughter.

    End of Round One

    Pretty standard Round 1.

He went first and ran all his units up except for gunny who just advanced.
I ran most everything except my AD Brigands. I got them in concealment and CRA'd one of his riders it passed it's tough check so was only knocked down but every little bit helps.

    End of ACSMedics Second Turn

He Started with charges that were slams. first slam was unsuccessful as it only slammed my war hog 1 inch colateral-ing nothing. other two slams were successful slamming brine 6 inches and other war hog 5 inches getting him two collateral on carver dealing 2 damage. he used the wagon to work on the slaughters only two were left over and knocked down, only hanging on thanks to tough checks.
Gunny got a critical devastation on the Brigands in the trench, however they all passed tough checks or weren't disabled. he then charged with the dragoon but failed to impact kill one of the knocked down brigs(passed tough) bomber and impaler also were working on one of the War hog's and Slaughterhousers. He Feated on this turn.

    End of My Second Turn

I started with The Bringer of Most Massive destruction. I began by Feating and casting batten down the hatches. I double Barreled the closest rider he had it Failed the tough roll. next was rorsh healing brine for 1 and casting pig Farm. he attacked the closest rider it passed it's tough check, Brine was on deck and cast pig farm and charged (after shaking off) and finished off the two riders. the forward war hog finished off the second to last rider. the back war hog charged the battle engine and destroyed it. the brigands left standing charged the remaining rider and killed, i think it passed one tough check. the slaughters and other brigands stood and tied up the dragoon, a brigand was able to do 1 damage to it, but that's it.

    End of ACSMedics Third turn

At this point he tried all he could to kill carver dealing 6 damage to him after two bombs and a gunny shot. ACSMedic conceded at this point

(I asked if i could try for the assassination but couldn't do it, war beast frenzied and did 15 damage to the other one, tried to get the kill with brine first but couldn't get the kill he transferred the heavy hit off. at that point i stopped so we could go to bed. I should have moved carver mobility and batten down the hatches war hog into gunny then rorsh diversionary tactics then charge into him. but that's all carefully thought out post game end thoughts.)

All said and done it was a great game against a great opponent. We both had a great time. It was very give and take and if it wasn't for Batten Down the Hatches most likely this game would have ended differently.

Thanks For the game ACSMedic. let me know i got anything wrong it sure is late writing this.

it was a blast of a game and I really would like to play ACSMedic again.

I think Fenri summed it up pretty well.

I made a couple of mistakes and no KD arm 21 piggies punished me severely for it. The crit devastation was fun but killed only one model so I went from elated that I actually got a crit dev to bummed that it only really slowed them down for a turn.

I had a blast (pun intended) and look forward to more games in this tourney and against Fenri.

Arkio and I were too lazy to take pics. Our game was pButcher vs Ashlynn. Quite a good scrap in the middle of the board with many kayazy dying and running around scared. Jugger failed to slam a man o War into ashlynn, so Butcher camped and put up iron flesh on himself with the wardog nearby. Ashlynn bravely ran at the butcher camping 5 focus, and almost slaying poor Wardog Sputnik the Brave (rolled tough). Next turn Butcher popped feat and put two swings into Ashlynn for the kill.

All in all a great match, a great list that i knew would give me problems. And of course, a great opponent!

It was me versus Arkol last night, here is how it went:

Deplyoment, my army is split into two halves, with Scaverous near one and the Arc and Skarlock near the other just in case they need spell support. Trolls deploy in a line.

Turn 1 Cryx: Stuff ran, TK'd arc and tried to Feast Dygs, failed.
    Turn 1 Trolls: Stuff ran.

Turn 2 Cryx: Scraps run, WSC puppet Scav, Feast on Pygs, most tough but 1 dies. Stuff runs and advances.
Turn 2 Trolls: Dygs dig, Madrak kills both Scraps with thrown Axe, Blood Fury's Fenns, Fell Caller yells at Fenns, Fenns Minifeat and charge, really damage Erebus (down to 2 boxes), kill Necrotech and 3 Mcs. Fell Caller 2 Pathfinders Tuffalos, sprays, kills another Mc. Tuffalos charge, killing alot of Mcs and the WWS. No points.

Turn 3: Mcs drag down a Tuffallo. Scaverous feats and Excarnates 3 Fenns, Skarlock Excarnates 1, WSC kill 2 Fenns and a Tuffalo. Darragh does nothing. Freestrike kills Nightwretch. Mcs kill a Fenn and a Tuffallo. 1 point to cryx.
Turn 3 Trolls: Vengance kills Erebus. Pygs pop up. Fell yells at Fenns and fails to charge Darragh. Fenns charge the WSC and Darragh, killing Maelovus. Madrak casts Warpath and Killing Ground. Second Fell crys the Dygs and misses with spray. Dygs
Dygs charge Skarlock, Stitches and Mcs, Mauler Rages, charges Scaverous and kills him with one hit (6,6,5 on the dice, eek!)

All in all a good game, I made some silly mistakes underestimating the Mauler's threat range, but I think I had the Scenario covered. Bring on the next game!

    My thoughts on the matter:

I decided to go second precisely because of scenario. I knew I wouldn't be getting rid of the thralls, but being able to clear an area before the first scoring might give me an advantage. I was really hoping either side flag would pop out, so I could concentrate on the left or right side, kill a bunch, feat, and possibly score. Then hopefully next turn still be sufficiently alive to at least clear one of the areas. The plan went to the drain when the middle flag poped out. At that point I wasn't sure how I could win.

Then he left his caster a bit open. What Rabid fails o describe is that I made a huge mistake at the end of the game. I was so focused on the fact that I needed both warpath and killing ground (and in order to cast both I couldn't be inside his control area because his feat makes my spell cost +1) that I forgot one of the most basic things. Warbeast ned to me in your control in order to be forced. So the mauler was outside of that for the assassination which is rather dumb.

Looking back I did have other solutions. First I have no idea why I dropped warpath. If I had not I could easily upkept both spells and cast killing ground even inside his control. Secondly I'm not even sure I needed killing ground. With the warpath movement I would be able to get around that wreck marker.

The damage roll on the FS on the arc node was pretty silly too.

All in all I made some mistakes, including one major one, but the dice saved me. A pretty undeserved win. I'm pretty sure karma will fix that soon :P

Still a great game, and as always a great opponent.

    Looking forward to more

Hi again guys. Really enjoying the games so far.

Ptotherice, I'm really looking forward to our game . Especially so since your list includes both a caster I haven't played against before, and two units I haven't played against before (The Risen and The Devil Dogs). I only hope the element of suprise doesn't mean you beat me so badly you get big headed . Just send me a PM on the forums to let me know when you'll be able to play and I'll see what I can do. I normally play in the late hours, but I may be able to organise something else.

Good luck to all who won

    Speak to you all soon

Alright given the time from the last game and considering the fact that Price and Johnny had mutually agreed on a scheduled game today and Johnny didn't show up I'm forced on a decision I didn't want to make but I feel I have to.

Price wins the game. Had they simple not managed to get the game on I could consider it a tie, but since both players agreed on a day/hour and one didn't show up I think it's only fair. Sorry Johnny.

Meanwhile I have rolled for second round parings are they are thus:

    Fenrir vs arkol
    Joe vs Price
    Medic vs Johnny
    Cygnus vs Rabid

Map was also randomized and the rolled one was: Dirt: Earthworks

    good luck all!

Hello guys. Terribly sorry about what happened. One or two of you know my area suffered some pretty bad storms the other week and as a result my internet access went down. It's now up and running as well as it ever has been. Sincere apologies to everyone for holding up the tournament, and especially to PtotheRice for keeping you waiting.

Arkol, I think the decision you made is more than fair. Being relegated to an auto lose is a far more pleasant option than dropping me entirely, which I would have understood had you done so.

Anyone who knows my habbits knows Im on Vassal pretty often. There should be no worries about me playing the second round game.

Good luck to everyone for the second round

Glad you accept the decision without question Johnny, I have to say I didn't like to have to make such a call, but it had to be and also glad to know everything is alright.

On another note me and Fen already did our game last night. I won. Later on I'll post a more detailed battle report (and by more detailed I mean a wall of text :P )

  33. #33

    Default

Alright so the actual report. In addition to the report I'm also gonna write my thought at the time and why I made the decisions I did and also try to identify the mistakes I made. I think this is important to do, even when you win, so you can improve your game.

So first things first I won the roll-off and while I usually prefer to go second I choose to go first. Mains reason for this was that I've gotten to know Fen's play-style with this army and it's very "in your face", so I was almost sure he would over-advance on his turn and thus I could get 2nd turn charges.

Given the map I decided to place my longriders in front of his forest, cause I expected his AD brigand (that has pathfinder for free on the first turn) to go there and I was pretty sure that they could take care of them (with pathfinder from the fell caller if needed). The fennblades deployed in a long line right to the riders and Madrak and everyone else deployed behind the fennblades but to the left (so near the riders) with the exception of a Caller more to the right in case the pygs needed to go there.

Fen deploy partially surprised me. His slaughters were way to the right and he placed Rorch & Brine behind that forest. The rest was pretty central and preditacble.

I then deployed my pygs more or less in front of Madrak and he placed the second brigand near that forest I mentioned.

First turn was rather straightforward with one exception. I wasn't sure if the longriders were gonna do anything in that flank so I considered running them towards the center instead. However a poor move of my second line of fennblades left that area rather clustered and so the solos had limited advancing paths. The long riders ended up running forward. Another questionable thing I did was but Blood Fury on Fenns instead of Riders. I've come to understand that it's better to start it on the riders. That way they can charge in, Madrak goes Blood Fury the Fenns and they charge in, and thus have it on them when they Vengeance next turn. However I knew I would need the Fennblades to charge with it and probably Feat with it to take care of the 2 Warbeasts in one go, so decided to get it on the Fenns. Besides as I mentioned I didn' think the longriders were gonna do anything there.

Fenrir unsurprisingly casts mobility and Batten Down the Hatches and advances everything. I think here was his great mistake. He moved way too much including his beasts and even B&R. After the game we figured out why. We had played this matched a couple weeks ago and he did the same thing. However I had terrible to hit rolls and ended up not killling any beast. This led Fenrir into a false sense of security with his arm 21 beasts.

Back to my turn I started doing some math and realized that if I could reach each warbeast with 4 Fennblades I could defiantly kill them. If they weren't too damaged after the charge I could keep fury on them and feat. If they only needed a couple more damage to die I could instead cycle Fury to Longriders (who after all were in charge range of Brine) and then feat on both the Fenns and the Riders.

Buff everything and charge. One beast got four Fennblades to it's face (one with rage) and the other got 5 (4 grunts and the officer). Here's how it looked:

Hitting on 3s and with 4 damage dice and 9 pretty good damage rolls later both were dead. I was kinda shocked that I didn't even needed to feat. This threw a twist in my battle-plan (a good twist that is). I decided I was no longer going to feat as it was not worth it to waste the feat to kill a couple brigands and R&B. So Madrak went Blood Fury the Riders, Pygs burrowed (which they should have done before the Fenns cause they almost messed up a charge lane) and then I got greedy. Wanting to end R&B in one shoot I decided to slam Brine into Rorsh. This would give me the collateral damage plus the rider attack to kill Rorch (and Brine with it). Two words. Brain fart. Not only I forgot he's a leser warlock and thus can transfer damage, after I couldn't actually attack Rorsh by 1/4 of an inch. So they were both alive (but at least KD). The remaining Riders only managed to kill one brigand each as they couldn't get any impact hits in.

Back to Fenrir who's obviously in a pretty bad shape. His caster is at full fury but without fury generating resources. As if that wasn't enough he has 12 angry trolls around him, a few more on the way. Not killing the Fennblades means they're all there to retaliate next turn. Killing only a few means they will get vengeance next turn. So Fenrir did the only logical thing. He killed a lot of them :P

Carver used his shotgun twice and Rifted and the right brigands charged in with quagmire. He killed quite a few but not enough. The Slaughters ran up to jam the remaining lanes to Carver. The left brigands ganged on a rider who survived thanks to toughand R&B both got up and coupled with diversionary tactics proceeded to dispatch both long riders.

Again my turn. At this point I didn't really see a way to win this turn. The game was under control yes, but I thought I couldn't get to Carver and defiantly couldn't win by scenario. Between the two rather major events of the maintenance phase (vengeance and the pygs popping out) I took be quite a bit to figure out out to do.

I had a lot of options. Doing some damage to Carver hopping that he couldn't cut then thus cast next turn with vengeance, regular attacks and feat I had a decent change of doing some damage. However def 15 and mat 6/8 wasn't so hot. Also the order in which I would do things was important since the Fenns didn't have blood fury on vengeance and wouldn't have it either during their activation because in order to get to carver I would have to move them and THEN feat. So I was relying mostly on the feat to deal damage. So I decided instead to kill as many farrow as possible, and then next turn either in by scenario or kill an undefended carver.
Fennblades vengeance on farrows and pygs pooed in a way to kill left brigands and/or Brine and/or objective.
Started with the solos and one pivotal movement was a fell caller. I basically moved him to where he could spray the most guys. He would get 4. Between his regular spray and the feat spray he might kill 3. Regular spray goes. Kills all 4. This moment completely turned my plan around again. Suddenly a few fennblades had charge lanes to Carver. Decided to go for it without blood fury. Thus I would get a few attacks with 3 dice from charging, and then feat with blood fury for another round of 3dice damage rolls. Charged in and after quite a few above average to hit and damage rolls carver was dead without the need to feat.

Here's how it looked at the end:

So all in all, I think I won because I knew my opponent better then he knew me, much of it because of the atypical game he had previously. The rolls didn't help to even the scale either. It was still fun although I admit it probably didn't look that way for Fenrir

Hey, I'm just playing Cygnus, but my Vassal connection just tanked. I've got the game saved just in case I can't get back on. Its my turn 1, so not much has happened so far.

edit: i'll read your report later, trying to get this sorted first.

edit: Vassal is dying tonight, i've got it saved if you're up for carrying on tomorrow night.

edit: Vassal keeps dying, I can't connect at all. Cygnus, i've got the game saved, if you want, we can finish this tomorrow.

Yeah, I was playing a game with Johnny and it was ridiculous how many times it crashed.

Right, despite Vassal going crazy and stopping the game, we finished it tonight.

@arkol, good report, looks like it was brutal.

Right, me versus Arkio (Cygnus). I forgot to take a picture of Deployment, but the first turn should give you a jist. I won the rolloff and chose top, letting Cygnus go first. I went for Mcs on the flank, magic in the middle.

Turn 1 (Mercs): Cygnus ran stuff
Turn 1 (Cryx): Stuff ran, Feast of Worms killed 3 ATGM

Turn 2 (Mercs): Ashlynn advances and feats, Distractions Mcs and kills one. Even with feat and Distraction, it only just hit. Its worth noting that Cygnus had some really poor dice rolls in this game. Gorman blinds the Nightwretch. A+H aim and shoot arc after kissing it, taking out its head and cortex. The Mule aims and snipes one Mc, crits it and Erebus, pops 2 Mcs. ATGMs advance and shoot the Arc, Crit Brutal kills it in one shot, kills the Necrotech. Rhupert Dirges the Halbs, Halbs charge/run. kills a scrap and stitch, ding Erebus. Rosie shoots Erebus, 6 damage
Turn 2 (Cryx):7 focus to Scaverous. Scrap Thrall charges Halberd through woods, fails. Other stuff advances, Skarlock death wards Scaverous (As I couldn't assassinate this turn, I decided to camp it out). Mcs run to engage Gorman to stop him Blinding Scaverous or Erebus. Scav TKs himself, charges Gorman and kills him. Erebus pops a Halb

Turn 3 (Mercs): Admonition upkept by Nailer, drop Quicken. Mule aims and shoots at Scav and bounces off due to camp. Rhupert toughs the Halbs, who charge Erebus and damage him, objective for 1 damage and kills one Mc. Ashlynn advances and camps, Rosie advances to give her a def bonus. Mages advance, takes 3 damage off the WWS, kill a Scrap Thrall which takes a Mage with him. Nailer runs. A+H stealth, shoots a stitch and a Mc.
Turn 3 (Cryx): Darragh Death Rides. Mcs charge, killing objective. WWS sprays, killing 4 Halberdiers. Scrap kills 1 more Halberd . Skarlock kills a Mc attempting to Excarnate another Halberd, Surgeon makes 3 mcs and lose a stitch to a FS from a Halberd. WSC pops 2 Halbs with souls from my Tier List helping, puppets Scav. Erebus does nothing to KD'd halb. Scav threshers and does nothing, TKs Rosie to prevent any charges to Erebus.

Turn 4 (Mercs): Corrosion'd Halb melts. Ashlynn charges Erebus, takes out Movement, Right arm and Cortex (he was pretty dinged up before). Pistol misses and Poltergeist pushes her 1". Casts admonition on herself. Rosie advances and leaves Erebus on one box. Mule aims at Scav, Crits, thrown 1" and kills a Halb, giving a soul for Scav.
Rhupert Dirges the ATGMs, Nailer runs. ATGMs back off, kill the WWS and a Mc. Holt charges, killing 2 Mcs and a Stitch Thrall.
Turn 4 (Cryx): Scaverous spends 1 focus to shake KD. Freestrike from Rosie wrecks Erebus and triggers Admonition on Ashlynn, meaning that I can no longer TK him out of 3" to drop the Defence bonus he gives). WSC puppet Scaverous, kill Wishnailer and last Halberd. Skarlock TKs Rosie for the Mcs, Surgeon makes 2 Mcs behind Holt and Aiyanna. Darragh advances and Beyond Deaths to prevent assassination As I was thinking of feating to kill Ashlynn, but I was unable to Assassinate and decided to camp it out.) Mcs charge Rosie, defensive strike gets 1 (A silly mistake on my part), 3 hit and do 19 damage, no systems lost. Scav charges Aiyanna and GM, misses and camps
Other Mcs charge, kill an ATGM and Holt. Aiyanna fails cmd.

At this point Cygnus concedes. It was a good game, but this list managed to do what it does best, just grind through the enemy. Cygnus had some poor rolls whilst I had some silly ones (at least 3 5,6,6's through the whole game). It got to a point where Ashlynn and Scaverous were in melee together, but neither one could assassinate, so they both buggered off. All in all, a good game.

Hey Joe, I'm absolutely free tomorrow, so shoot me a PM or a post in this thread and we can play tomorrow! (: I also don't work until 6:00 my time (Central Time) on Sunday, so just let me know, I'm excited to get demolished by the most insane man in Khador!

Great write up, rabid! That looked like a pretty fun game all-in-all.
