Default Saxon Orrik, Legion hunter. C&C Welcome

Here is my Saxon Orrik. Haven't sealed him for play yet, looking for critiques prior to calling him done.

Wanted a basing challenge so I sculpted the base with Super Sculpey, WIP of the base is in another thread.

I tried to challenge myself with painting a little bit on this one. Free hand on the cape and new colors for shading. Tried a few new things, Experimented with shading the cream cape with sanguine base and cryx base to try to bring the reds and purples from the base a little into the model. I used green for the cloak and highlight to compliment the purple on the base. I wanted to try to get away from Badab Black and Devlin Mud, so only washes i did here were ones I made of myself and only tones not far from the base color. All this is new for me, I know I have a long way to go. Anyway, here it is:

I really like the work on the shading of the cloak. I also like the shades of green you have on there, they really pop, and contrast well with the beast head.

I cant see much of the model's detail though due to the range of the picture. So I can't offer much CC there.

One thing that I would say though is that there is not enough contrast between the tounge of the beast head on the base, and the membrane that makes up the sides of the mouth. The colors seem to blend right into each other, which makes it hard to distiguish one part from the next. I think this is especially an issue on the area under the models left foot. The tip of the tounge seems to meld with the side of the mouth, instead of remaining a seperate piece.

I would just go back over that membrane with a highlight layer conatianing a different color, maybe a red or a blue shade, to help distiguish the areas.

You may also consider glossing the tounge after you seal it to give it the look of a fresher kill, still gooey. Maybe even some gore...

But over all I really like how it looks.

    Great job!

    Keep it up.

Probably not the part that gives you the most pride, but my favourites are the shades of the cape. Just beautifully creamy.
    Great job all around though.

I'll toss up a compliment on the cloak too, that's really nicely done. Is that layered, or two-brush blended by any chance??

Not sure what layered is, but I just did it like a glaze, a couple passes of really thinned down red on the cream base, then rinsed the brush quickly and used the damp brush to push the red into the cream color. Then hit up some edges of it with thin Cryx bane highlight to kind of "catch the light" in areas. Not sure what made me think those three colors would mesh well, but it worked, lol. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Madmasha, you're absolutely right about the tounge and cheek, I will try to separate those two visually. Thanks for the feedback. This is my "out of my comfort zone" model

Looks a little like a new Legion Beast with burrowing is about to devour him!

I jest, I live the sculpting on the base, and Saxon's paint job.

Solid stuff there, mate. I'd like to see some close ups of the skin and such, but the basing is very eye catching and I'm guessing that is the area you'd really like critiqued. While it's a little rough (especially around the sides), you've done a bang up job of selling the scene which is important. Were you to do it again (not suggesting you should), I'd make it more evident that Saxon brought the beastie down by including damage to the skull. This would also help break up how bland the back of the base is where the carapace resides. I'd also spend a bit more time thinking about how things will end up falling after death and maybe including a bit more gore (a base like this definitely is made by the bloody details).

Anyway it looks great and is very impressive from the front.

+1 to what he said, the base rocks, and adds to the models pose. Very cool.

Extremely sweet my friend. Probably my favorite saxon I've ever seen.
