Big Blue (still WIP)

G'day

don't post a lot in here coz its a nightmare on a mobile device. I'll try keep some WIP shots of my Big Blue coming though.


sizing him up on the base for his wall.

Main colors blocked out. sitting next to my thunderhead for a comparison on the scheme I'm aiming for with him. I'm fairly happy with the color breakup at this point, so I think I'll press on.

The blue color has been worked on. White hopefully tomorrow night then I can check my highlight and shadow balance and adjust accordingly. The coloring isn't as subtle as the camera makes it out to be...

update for 17.6.12 - white is more or less finished. I'm actually not too happy with the blends on this one, but I'm on a marginal deadline and I really can't start over again. I will probably do some localized glazing to pull the blend more into line.




18.6.12 : managed a fair bit of work this evening. I need to do some more on his coils though - just not too happy with them...

There are some things I would have done differently, and will do differently on my next big guy.

This guy, however, is no longer mine. I was approached at an event I was running on the weekend and an offer made to purchase this guy and the two battle engines I have for my Storm Bringers army. Offer was accepted, so I am on to a Conquest list!

Interesting that the feet on your big guy are resin, mine are metal. Lookin' good!

Looking good, but tbh, I think the scale on the bricks is too big. Makes Stormy look like a toy and those bricks would need a crane to move. Making the bricks a smaller scale would push the illusion farther.

Right, but it's about creating a convincing illusion. That said, I think it looks great, as is, and getting paint on the bricks will help a lot. Too bad 5" bases aren't easily available separately; you could make a couple mock-ups and see what works.

What did you use as a filler on the base? Also, do you do this on all of your bases? He's looking fantastic, so keep up the good work.

The filler is a hardware product called spakfiller. I'm not sure if its not an Aussie version of spackle. I don't use it on all ny bases, but it does a great mud look. so on the bases I want to look muddy, or trenchy, I'll use it. it has a very fine texture.

Putting the "Wall" in "Stormwall".

I'll echo the brick comment. I think they're well sized for the scale, but that makes him look smaller. Compare the brick to the Thunderhead and it's pretty massive. They do have laborjacks, but not laborcollasals.

I'm still not quite sure what to do with the bricks. I really wanted to show him busting through bricks that no normal jack could possibly take. Although I appreciate the scale comments, I really worry if I make the blocks any smaller I'll lose that aspect of it.

The pyramids were built with larger bricks than we see nowadays. I have also seen old barns with foundations of cut stone slabs that are massive.

The cream/white has gone quite dark. I think it looked better as the 06-15-2012 (2nd post) But I think you had just blocked the colour out in that pic.

On such a large model I dont think the shades and highlight need to be as exagerated as on normal warjacks.

Still looking great though. Definately want to see the finished product

I was thinking about the wall. To make it look like he is smashing through you could use wire to hold the bricks in place as if they are just flying out of the wall. Connect via corners and use the positions to hide the supporting structure... er that's a terrible description of what I mean. Let me try to work it out so i can show you....

The white is not actually as dark as it appears - if you compare the desk you'll notice the white balance is all off in the white shots. The huge amount of black still remaining also makes it look darker than it is - more than 40% of it is menoth white highlight up to morrow white. I agree its looking dark in the photos, but I'm fairly confidant it'll come good yet.

I understand what you mean with the bricks too and its a great idea. I have some fine wire so I'll give it a crack.
