Default Dark Shroud and Knock Down

Can Dark Shroud be used to debuff models that are knocked down? DS reads that if affects models within its melee range, but the KD rule states that something that is knocked down can't be in anything's melee range. Is this possible? Can I really knock down something and suddenly be unable to hurt it with my axe because DS mysteriously didn't do it's job? Will other models similarly not be able to benefit from the debuff for that same reason?

You have it backwards, a knocked down model has no melee range. Being knocked down does not change whether or not anything can hit you.

Yes, a knocked down model cannot engage other models, but it still can BE engaged by other models, thus can still be hit/debuffed by Dark Shroud.

    Not entirely correct.

However, Dark Shroud does not require engaging, only that enemy models are within melee range of the model with Dark Shroud.

Being knocked down prevents you from engaging (or being engaged by) the knocked down model, but the model is still in your melee range. If not, you would not be able to attack it!
