I tend to run them in a straggling line with 2 of the scribes within 1" of the stone itself. Usually you'll want them behind your front line infantry as they're fairly squishy (by troll standards at least)

I keep the stone as far forward as I can while still being behind the front lines of the beasts or champs. I try and keep at least 3 scribes within 3" for self sac range - but against most lists I don't put them any close than that as it just makes you bait for AOEs. Watch out for push/pull effects that can drop you out of self sac range though, as well as "not attacks" like stormsmiths, Magic Bullet spell, Sacrificial Strike or the like.

The stone should try and be as far forward possible, but should be huddled near major threats to absorb attacks off them. They should aim to be second wave, if they are too far back then they wont be able to support your frontline when you engage the enemy.

Also they make great counter punch models. Their stats are not horrible and a with a boosted POW 10 off a charge and a few lucky hits from a POW 10 you can take out all sorts of models for an ideal points exchange (Manhunters, Knights Exemplar, Heavy Cavalry, Stormblades, Bane Thralls or Knights. etc)

A minimum KSB unit with the UA is a good 4PC addition to a beast heavy eDoomy list at any points level I find. Understandable they are also quite good with anything brick oriented as well.

I think you are misunderstanding on how exactly the stone works.

The Aura is given off from the model that is actually carrying the stone. So all measurements will be done from this model and this model alone, there is no need to worry about where the rest of the unit is in regards to buffing other models. Most people just eep 1-2 models in the unit close to the stone bearer to make use of self sacrifice, other than that the models are usually back behind the army trying to stay out of the way.
