Default 1st turn upkeep spells from theme list benefits.

Do you still pay for the upkeep of the spell on the first turn?

No you don't, it says so in the tier benefits I believe.

I just read Magnus2's tier list and it doesn't specify that its free. It just says "Models in Magnus' Battlegroup can begin the game affected by his upkeep spells. These spells and their targets must be declared before either player sets up models."

So I guess the question is "They start with the upkeep. During the first control phase, does magnus have to spend 1 focus to maintain each upkeep spell?"

You must still pay the upkeep cost on your first turn, as normal. The advantage is that you still wind up saving some Focus/Fury, since upkeep cost is less than casting cost. Plus, you don't have to wind up waiting until your warcaster or warlock activates to get the spell out there.

Edit: to be more clear, the tier benefit does not modify the upkeep cost, unless it says it does (some do, some do not). If it doesn't, then normal upkeep costs apply, which can, of course, be modified by other things.

It reads the rulebook or it gets the hose again.

sweetness. Also, part 2 is important if you lose the roll to win, I mean go first!

Important to note, Magnus1/Magnus the Traitor has Resourceful, which means he doesn't spend focus to upkeep spells on his battlegroup.

    Edit:
Even more important to note: Magnus1 has the upkeep Tier Benefit, not Magnus2/Magnus the Warlord.

Um... Did you actually read the rule before making a ruling? It says specifically that you do not have to pay it the first turn.

That is the full text. There is no mention of free upkeeps.

However, Magnus the Traitor has Resourceful, which means he upkeeps spells on his battlegroup for free.

Interesting... All the others with that bonus do not have to pay. Poor Magnus, always getting the raw end of things.

I did, and answered based on it. You apparently did not read it before posting the above, though. The "as normal" part of my answer does not preclude the special "free upkeep" that Kallas mentioned.
