remains in play?

How do you handle remains in play affects model wise? Like pillars and forests and the like?

Cut out pieces of paper or felt with a diameter of how big the effect is. Like a pillar is the same size as an Aoe 3 template...I used printer paper

You can also get metal rings at Hobby Lobby(and possibly other craft stores) that come in 3", 4", and 5" diameters for cheap.
