Man O' War...someday soon...
I don't care for Yuri much, but I like to toss a Manhunter to the side of the board to act as a distraction. Opponents don't like something that speedy running around behind them, so I've been able to peel off a solo, jack, or small unit from the opponent's army to make him chase me. Otherwise, I use them as solo hunters when I have 2 points to spare. I suppose Yuri would be able to do the same, except he could hunt down units. I've seen Yuri get the first charge on a 10 man unit and kill several, thinning their numbers and halting their movement up the field for a turn.

Manhunters: It's kind of nice to have a two point solo that an opponent has to deal with. They hit really hard for what they cost, and letting them roam free is a mistake. Flank with them and distract the enemy, or flank them and look for an opening. Sometimes I can park me in the woods for a turn and not touch them and the opponent will forget about them (to their detriment) as I maneuver the rest of the force. They also make good guard dogs for things that like the woods. Run Emma with widowmakers into a tree line and they are tough to remove.
Yuri runs the same, but seems like he needs a group of guys to thresher on to make his 3 point cost back. I may just be playing him wrong, I admit I don't have the greatest grasp on him yet.
Yuri gives Treewalker to manhunters - and hangs back to threasher half of a unit in one attack (and kill them...)
Manhunters scare your opponents solo's and will put down a warcaster. Manhunters with treewalker are terrifying.
Sorry thats really all that needs to be said for them - wish I had more time to go into a tactics discussion... real life calls...

I'd not tried using the feat on them before, but I had a spare eVlad feat boost going so I thought 'What the hey!'. I couldn't charge because of Temporal Barrier, but the 9" walk to single-handedly tear an Ironclad apart sure was awesome! (Admittedly, I did use two focus from Transference too, but let's not let details ruin the moment...)
As for Yuri and Friends as a whole, Yuri's mere existence raises the Manhunters from kind-of harrassment and perhaps missile to something that can be an absolute sod for your opponent. DEF16vs melee in a forest is surprisingly hard to deal with, and shooting needs to be able to ignore all their rules.
The ability to ignore forest LOS blocking can also stymy your opponent's positioning of key models, especially when you realise how much of a punch they pack.
Yuri himself, I'll admit to occasional difficulties in proper use. I do love him with anyone that can boost his power in some way, like the butchers or pVlad. Generally he seems to be overkill on single wound infantry, but he doesn't have quite the hitting power to crack a multi-wound brick, like, say, Troll Champs. He can seriously dent a jack, but is that worth 3pts? Still not convinced.

yuri gave them treewalker witch is simple great. camp them behind a wood or so far deep in nobody can see them use them as a giant beacon that says" if you come near me you will die" very fun to do and people forget about them then you charge them in and kill kill kill
On my Man huntress' first outing she ran around to my opponents rear and charged a light jack he split off to deal with her.. Needless with Evlads transference up. there was no more protectorate light jack left after she was done with it. Impressive enough as she weakened his main force with the removal of that light jack allowing my Demo corp to walk over to kreoss and introduce him to the glory of their ice mauls. I will be getting a 2nd man hunter and Yuri. to deal with those hill billy opponents that like to throw down forests all willy nilly. And with her fearless ability she wont be scared off so easily

i also like to use yuri to allow my manhunters to protect my widowmakers. stick the widows in a woods, put yuri or a manhunter far back in the woods. the widows will be a major annoyance, and my opponet will have to come deal with them. after the widows are wiped out, yuri and company can counter charge and wipe out the unit, effectively doubling the use of the widowmakers.
Alternatively you can stack your threat ranges to make it very very difficult to take out your WM and Manhunter block. Widows get positioned in range of a unit (~14", outside charge range, but potentially within run distance). Then your Manhunters post up with their 9" (11 for Yuri) charge range. Enemies must then decide to ran to engage the Widowmakers and get butchered by manhunters/Yuri or hang out of range of the hunters and get shot down by the Widowmakers. Of course a few things hamper this. Stealth for one, AOEs (especially boostable ones) for two. There is also the fact that this setup costs at least 8 points, and as much as 13 (WM, MM, Yuri, MHx2). Oh, and terrain is important too. You'll want some of that.
Regardless, this amount of AD can be enough to dictate where enemy units move on the board, forcing chokepoints into your heavier elements. Worst comes to worst, they pursue and murder your light harassers with some portion of their army. By this point, you'll have shifted your caster and other elements to the other flank, splitting their forces and making for an easier time of attrition.
At least that's how it's supposed to go![]()
Against an incautious opponent Manhunters can simply gut a Warnoun, especially under pButcher or eVlad feats or just S&P/Transference.
it looks like he hauls his points if you take manhunterx2 and ...kossites. I dont hate them but only elves should bring a bow to a gun fight. But on another note why not take kayazi eleminators, assassins and boss?

If you have 6+ points to dedicate in a list, then Kayazi are likely going to outperform a couple solos in most circumstances.
The introduction of the Eliminators also challenges Yuri's&Co's effectiveness because with the exception of very high ARM unscreened targets they're a better overall package.
If you only have 2 pts, however, then a single Manhunter can be turned into a potent model without much effort, especially with guys like pButch and eVlad. And if you were taking the Manhunter anyways, and are likely to take the field in a lot of forests, then Yuri and a 2nd Manhunter can probably pay dividends over 2 Eliminator units.
So situationally, they can be better.
points, for one thing. to take a full loadout of kayazy assasins, underboss, and two eliminator units is nearly 20 points. while they have a really high DEF, especially under iron flesh and while enganged in melee, there are a lot of things that can ignore DEF entirely.
the other thing to consider is damage output. Yuri and the manhunters are all weaponmasters, which means that their damage can pretty easily exceed the kayazy against single targets (or bunch-up units in Yuri's case).
oh i didnt mean all the assassins just comperable points. I got yuri and a male and female hunter as a gift. So i have been looking at old witch kossites spareingly and strakov makeing a stealth spam list. But i suppose the reall meat and turnups is do i want to smash high arm? Or high def? Missle or scalpel? One qualm i have is yuri is 3 points and i would take him for the treewalker alone. But its granted. Not a tactic. So he goes the threat goes too. And due to me useing blast damage all the time most of my mete never clumps. Should i just sent yuri and friends to hunt jacks or do they not hit that hard?
Man O' War...someday soon...
I thought Yuri was Elite Cadre. I'm 99% sure that Manhunters (and Kossites) keep Treewalker even if Yuri dies. Amusingly, in Steamroller, if you have Yuri in your Reinforcements, your Manhunters still get Treewalker when playing a Reinforcement scenario, even if Yuri's not on the board yet. He only has to be in your list.

Yuri is hard to make back his points. The buffs to manhunters and kossites is good. As for dmg, he really needs to end up in combat with expensive units. Things like cav, heavy infantry, charecter units, solos. If he charges basic infantry then he usually does not make back his 3. This has been my experiance.
After your opponent charges you - more times than not he will be bunched up. This is where Yuri excels. I counter-charged and killed 6 Stormguard models - that were benefiting from Arcane Shield. From one attack - thats pretty big. Thats what Yuri does - he punishes opponents when they clump up. It is incredibly hard to not clump your guys up when you charge an opposing unit - because you want to try and get as many attacks in as possible. Intentionally, holding back half of your unit when you have the charge is pretty hard to do.
Also - I had a game where Yuri won it for me because he charged the opposing warcaster (Kreoss) and did 9 points of damage and then took out a column on a heavy warjack that was right beside him. The warjack kept missing him and then Kreoss had to try and kill Yuri - after missing 2 attacks (one with the boost) Yuri finally vanished, but it held up my opponents line and left his caster open. Next turn I assassinated Kreoss
Don't think of it in these terms. When have your mechanics made back their points? Strategic advantages are worth more than simply making points back. Heck i've won games where my opponent has killed 3/4 of my army and I get an assassination run or scenario victory off - without even managing to kill 1/4 of their army
agreed, even something doesn't "make back its points," it can still be a useful tool if it can delay your opponent, or cause him to not engage, giving you an extra round of shooting, or shift his line away from Yuri, which allows you to drop a bombard on a clump of infantry, or opens up a charge lane for sorscha or...
They're just like scouts in other games - they can get into places your opponent doesn't expect. If they have a manhunter on their flank, they must choose between dealing with it (and turning attention and fire away from your main force) or ignoring it (and risk letting an enemy run free behind the lines). If you try and use skirmishers the same way as line troops, they'll never make sense.
One difference between yuri/manhunters and eliminators is that yuri and manhunters is much less vulnerable to blast damage. Sure eliminators have 5 boxes but with their arm it isn't much. Between stealth and a solid (middle of the range) ARM they are quite difficult to kill from range.
I assume "Daisy" is the female manhunter? So I was wondering, since when do manhunters have tough? I sure would love it on them though.
Have used the manhunter unit (Yuri & 2 manhunters) to some effect already. Usually going to the flanks and going after the journeyman or other stragglers in the back of my opponent's army. Also used them + Eiryss as my 10 points of reinforcements in SR2012 scenarios, they did a number on a full BD IFP unit.
But I am also looking get at least one (and if possible) two eliminator squads as they seem fun as well.
(2 squads of eliminators + Yuri & 2 manhunters does give one a lot of options for eVlad feat turn (even if a few get shot up along the way)
Manhunters I can sell you , Yuri sadly for me is AoE magnet and after being horribly put down by a JWC's ranged weapon last game he is hiding in shame.
Yuri and the Manhunters are "old school" tech that still work really well. Like anything else, it depends on what you're looking for: the "Manhunter Module" is primarily useful because it's maneuverable (Pathfinder/Treewalker + AD,) survivable (very solid DEF/ARM + Stealth + Camo + Treewalker,) accurate (MAT 8 on all of them,) hard hitting (weaponmasters all,) and generates a decent amount of attacks (both Manhunters have two initials, Yuri has Thresher.)
It's a set of models that are useful because of how flexible they are: between the three of them they can chop up a unit, pick off solos, carve chunks out of warjacks/warbeasts, or even go after 'casters. And, as others have mentioned, they can usually absorb a few resources or tie up your opponent after they get stuck in (particularly if you can get them in melee in a forest, where they hit a very nice DEF value.)
They're slightly terrain dependent (Treewalker isn't much use without trees, and Pathfinder is a lot less valuable if you don't have a terrain around to make use of,) and they don't like anti-Stealth measures, but other than that, they usually do quite well. I recently dusted off the trio after a long hiatus, and it was really nice to have three little weightlifters with axes running amok again.
Everything's eventual.

I use them alot because they are my only painted models. Im considering switching to Eliminators though because of the terrain dependence issue. When I have lots of forests and terrain they can be good, if you play them carefully and well. When there is little terrain or no forests, they become huge targets and approach being a waste of points.
I dont think Yuri is worth 3 though. He seems to have the big 'round up' points cost issue we see alot in Khador. With reach thresher hes probably worth 2.5 points.
I use Yuri in my eButcher theme list all the time. He's a great assassin with fury and feat tokens, and gives be an answer for terrain issues that would be a problem otherwise. Outside of something like a 'jack or Fenris/drakuhn he's one of the best feat missiles you can find.
Another important factor to consider is the myriad speed buffs you can throw on Yuri and the Manhunters. Coupled with Treewalker, the three of them can threaten a really large portion of the board. Board control without threat of retaliation? I'd buy that for a dollar.
Warning: I read all of your posts, Steamwitch, but skimmed the rest of the thread, so I may be repeating others.
1) You are incorrect about Treewalker; it is Elite Cadre, which means it stays in play after Yuri dies.
2) Under no circumstances should you feel compelled to take Kossites to make Yuri worthwhile.
In terms of fielding them, they enjoy a solid spot in my eVlad list, because feated Manhunters with Treewalker will charge out of a forest the enemy can't see through and wreak utter havoc in enemy lines. I almost always use Yuri as a speedbump; he can't be feated, I took him for the Treewalker. He's a threat that can't be ignored, so he'll ALWAYS be a good speed bump - if you ever have an opponent brave enough to ignore him, show them how much Yuri can kill on a charge and the opponent will never do it again.
They are in competition with, say, two Eliminator teams, because they have Pathfinder (and Saxon is probably busy with another unit, like the Assassins) and Treewalker, allowing for the forest trick I listed, as well as other shenanigans like crossing wreck markers. They also hit harder when they do connect, admittedly at a lower accuracy but with a lot more durability - none of them care about the others dying, and since they're solos they have superior tactical flexibility.
If you show me a 35 point eVlad list, I can almost certainly show you what you should be dropping in favor of these three; I can 100% certainly do it at 50 points.
Check out the confrontation line. I got a pack of three guys with double axes, Kelt warriors?, look great as manhunters and appropriate for Heart of Darkness. They arent PP, but then im never gonna bring this list to a tourney, and this way im not fielding doubles.
Yeah these guys:
