If he wants to run the Pirates, Talion is okay. But honestly, he's better off running Shae's tier list... Provided Shae was his intended warcaster.
If he was going with Fiona or Bart, either Four-Star or Highborne will actually be better for them due to the increased levels of chicanery & shenanigans available!!
If your opponent has you outgunned, outnumbered, outflanked, and outmatched, that's the time to do something stupid
"and then some one is going to whip out a trident , and the office will get interesting"Get to ze rigid airship!!
Ahh... I skipped a step, so bear with me, as I just woke up about 10 minutes ago.
When you play Mercenaries in a tourney, that is your faction. You can play what ever contracts or theme forces you want to for your lists.
Examples :
Talion, Four-Star, theme X
Highborne, Theme Q, Theme 9
Searforge, Talion, Four-Star
As long as you are not repeating any characters, you are good to go!!

With SR, a few things to note: Shae and the Pirates life list is good at 35pts, and great at 50, but has some bad matchups at 25pts and below. Any Armor heavy list, they'll have problems with as the Talion charter has nothing for cracking ARM 18+ reliably.
Also something to look into. If you have timed turns. The troops/synergy heavy Talion charter/Pirates life theme is time intensive. You will be screaming through your turns with only seconds to spare. I have only played a few games with them and lost horribly because I got to move half of my army. Bad news. Just keep that in mind.
That being said. I have splattered just about anything that has come my way save from an all shooty Highborne list with Ashlynn and Kharchev (but this is a "duh!" thing). Love the Pirate's Life theme, but ALWAYS bring the Commodore and Rockbottom. It'll just add so much fun! SLAM BALL! *Poom!* Just knocked your spd 4 jack backwards 6".ha ha.
Why is all the pirate gone?
Need Moar Pirates...
I feel the need to chime in as many people say Shae doesn't have answers for high armor. I've never had an issue with armor in a Shae list before. The solution is easy. You just don't go full on infantry heavy and run more heavy warjacks (Nomads, Manglers, Freebooters, whatever). Pair that with Aiyanna and Holt. This makes all the difference.
thanks for the input
he was sold on running pure talion but you have talked him round to opening his options
shae is his 1st choice
fiona 2nd
magnus 3rd
Hi all,
This thread is similar to a question I wanted to ask so rather than dupe posts Ill ask here.
Im starting with mercenaries (have played circle for a year or two so I am well bedded into the game) I am starting with Shaes Pirate Life theme force.
In my local UK meta steamroller tournaments are mainly 2 lists character restricted.
What do you think is the best mercenary caster to be an alternative list to Shaes 'Pirate Life'?
I am happy to use dwarfs, 4*, highborn, tallion - anything.
Thanks in advance for your input!
Shae, at least the way I tend to play him, tends to be my "fast" list, all about getting as many pirates in peoples grills as quickly as possible and trying to take the alpha strike if I can get it.
I would probably look into going 4* or highborn and trying to build a heavy removal list, although the dwarfs are way up there too in this regard (I am not reccomending you to get into 2 niche armies in merc, unless you love them).
Would look into Magnus (either), Gorten, possibly Mac Bain... Bart once galleon comes out...
Go with a 4 star Durgen list. He is the best all around caster in Mercs and will be a good match up for anything you feel Shae will be weak against.
I think the three pirates are pretty well rounded as is, Though Shea has the Cannon, Don't make the mistake I did, Shea is an up close melee heavy caster, and he loves himself some Freebooters. while he's focusing on Freebooters Broadside should be less of a shooting gallery and more of a walking wall of guns, The Rover is perfect with Batten down the Hatches at 23 armor and can't be knocked down! and feora is a unit junky, she'll take on those other unit heavy lists with very nice results. I say it can be done with nothing but the talon charter alone, though you will have to think outside the box a little, any list can be offset by some careful planning.
