    Default Desert Storm WIP

Just got done using my new airbrush on my Stormwall. Got the entire model done in less then 45 min! It was really easy and came out great, now I am going to mess it up with my horrible brush skills.

Wait, why did it take 45 minutes to paint it beige?

What kind of airbrush did you use? Was this your first time ever using one? I am interested in getting one for when the Conquest comes out, but don't know too much about them. Great start btw, can't wait to see it all done!

I used the Iwata-Medea Eclipse HP CS Dual Action Airbrush Gun / Gravity Feed that was recommended to me. It was my first time using an airbrush and it was easy with the help of the article that Matt wrote in NQ 42.

    nice color.

since you are an airbrush beginner i will give a tip.

put a highlight color to the beige (or mix with white) into the airbrush and airbrush over your current work. But only from an upward angle so it creates natural hightlights over the base beige. This is called zenithal hightlights or something like that.

what i normally do is tart wtih black undercoat and coat a lot with dark color. Then i use the main color and spary 90 degrees and upwards. then with lighter colors i just keep raising the angle until i am almost vertical pointing down to the mini.

Hope my text made some sense.

Oh and enjoy the world of airbrushing.

I'm also a recent convert to airbrushing (but sadly no Collosal yet)! Look forward to seeing this done!

You picked your colors well young Padawan.

I'm glad you chose these colors. Looks really nice. I wasn't trying to be difficult in answering your questions but more trying to get you to think outside the box. I get lots of questions about what colors people should choose. I'd rather y'all have the tools to make those decisions than me just rattle off color options.

Remember for shading you will want some cooler colors incorporated. Cool colors recede into the background while warm colors push to the front. This guy is nothing but warm colors and it works! You want to make sure those warm colors pop. I'd mix some green in for shadows. Something like an olive and possibly a little dark brown. Then highlight with warm colors again.

Make sense? If not, you know where to find me Spaz! I'll be sending you a message later anyway. I would love to see this guy in person when it's finished. It's making me jones to finish my Stormwall now!

I hear airbrushes use ridiculous amounts of paint compared to normal painting. I have a friend who does it, but of course he probably gets his paint super cheap as he helps make it. Oo

Not at all. It's less paint! Way less being used and usually less paint going on the model. If I had painted my stormwall by hand it would have taken so much longer and sooooooo much more paint.

I have to agree with the less paint. Keep in mind that you thin the paint before using it.... and you don't rinse/cleaning your brush off in water after every few strokes.

When I painted the 5 Spider Striders blues it was probably a full hour in painting time. That means 5 torso, 40 legs, 40 feet, 5 upper coil assemblies... in an hour with very little wasted paint.

I cant wait to see what else you do with this big boy Spaz.

it actually uses more paint if you compare it per time spend painting, but not by models painted with said paint.

As the above example witht he 5 striders, in one hour he used 5 striders worth of paint.

but you aren't putting as much paint on the model. Airbrush layers are thinner than hand brushed layers. You also need maybe one or two light passes with an airbrush to get solid coverage. Even with difficult colors like red and yellow you are able to get solid coverage using less paint.

You don't have to believe us but I will ask, are you basing your airbrush uses more paint on personal experience or some other information?

i paint with an airbrush for over 10 years. and if you read again what i wrote you would acutally understand that what i meant was that you use more paint in the same time frame, but not per miniature. was just trying to explain why some ppl acutally believe you use more paint with an airbrush which isnt true.

English isnt my native language and i might have some trouble explaining myself.

I knew you weren't trying to be difficult and understood why you told me what you did. I didn't read this post before I started shading as you might tell from the finished product but I am happy with it.

    Looking pretty good.
I want my brother (who paints for me as I'm handicapped) to dive into airbrushing but:
    - It has a high starting cost and that is money that can go towards new models (airbrush, air compressor, thinner/maskingtape/materials, spray booth)
    - We don't have a place to dedicate to it
    - I think he is intimidated by it a bit (a guess, not known fact)

I think this beast could really benefit from some armor wash on the metal bits. Though this is almost a completely different scale from most miniature photos, so the light may be playing tricks on me.

I'm with you, a bit of a wash on the metals would look great. My models are all washed to hell and back and super dirty looking, though, so that's a personal choice.

Looks good, but still a little unfinished. I would use a brown wash on the metals, then go back and highlight them after that. Also add some black into the model in some small areas to give it more contrast. Like the small plates above the head that are currently just the base color and surrounded by brass. And black out the center of the barrels for sure, I always drill mine out but I have OCD when it comes to such things.

kinda suprised how well the green looks, not normal for cygnar. The color combinations is really overall and works well.

little tip: try to shade arround the rivets like you did in the shoulder part, so they pop out. Some ppl paint rivets metalic which is also a good way to make them pop. But i personally paint them the same color, shade arround and do an extra very light highlight.

Also a bit of black wash on metal and brown on the brass parts would make him pop out more.

But i am still suprised how well the desert scheme works with cygnar
