    Default lets talk Devil Dogs

So, this is the one unit that i have never seen in a list in all my time playing. Is it that they have a roll better filled by other units? Is it that for 1 point more you can get hammernaters? Or are they just bad? They seem to have good stats, strength and MAT 6 are both good, they have good weapons, and a good drive. I am trying them out in my 50 point Fiona list

    Fiona
    -Mariner
    -Welsh Nylons
    max press gangers
    max nyss hunters
    Alexia and the risen
    Bokur (On Alexia)
    max devil dogs
    -mule
    Aiyana & Holt
    pEiryss

Does any one else use these anti jack specialists? and if so, how, and how have they worked for you?
    Freebooter VS Nomad
This is assuming charging, and against a knocked down target with armor 20 (average d6 roll is a 3.5)
    Freebooter: 14+14=28 14+10.5=25 for a total damage of 13
    Nomad : 17+10.5=28 14+7=21 for a total damage of 9

I use the Devil Dogs because the models are so totally, totally sweet.

From a game play perspective, they're a good buy in high point (50+) games. They have a mediocre engagement range and they have just awful defensive stats so they're best used as a second-line unit, backing up more capable troops. You really want at least two other units before you start considering the Devil Dogs. Also, at high point levels there will be plenty of jacks and beasts for them to kill.

Other than acting as a reserve line mop-up detail and jack killers, their other role is to marshal, because Pronto is boss. I usually marshal a Mule so it can Pronto back and forth and always get the aiming bonus, or, if I'm looking to be more aggressive, I marshal a Buccaneer and go for super-knockdown go time!

I find they're good with Ashlynn, because Quicken makes everything better, and MacBain likes having the marshaled jack around to help out and he can keep Sam alive with his feat. They're not a great unit, but they're good enough. And the models are sweet.

They're cheap enough to bog down lines, especially if you're running Alexia and the Risen.
Huh. Six months away from Cygnar and I've forgotten how to win... until Kara Sloan goes all 'bullet to the head' several games in a row. It's good to be back.

I've been wondering about this unit myself. I'm trying them out with Constance in a 50pt game and may even get crazy and try them in a 35pt game. I'll post my reaction to them soon

I'm thinking of using them in Ashlynn's Tier actually. The knockdown potential will make for some great assassination runs I think.

Khador may have been my first, but Mercs keep me coming back for more.

I use them in MacBain Teir list and I have had fun with them with p-Magnus.

With Magnus and MacNaile you can get good use out of slug guns. Piper and blur gives them a great Def against range. I generally play Teir list with Magnus but this can make a fun change up. I also like DD with two Talons.

They were my first WM unit and I use them all the time. They are decent against other infantry and good against Jacks and beasts, especially with support). Add a Bucc to knock stuff down, and to paraphrase Arnold "If it falls down, we can kill it."

I think of them as specialist Steelheads. They're essentially the same stat wise and only a point more expensive. My jack of choice with them is the Buccaneer. He's super cheap and has Assault Nd the auto-knockdown net.

I used to run a Mule on them, but with Highborn now having ATGM that seems kind of pointless. I still do it if I want to run a Mule with Cygnar, maybe with pCaine for example.

IMO Sam's has the best Drive in the game: Pronto. Couple it with 2x Buccaneers and you'll get the best of 2 rules: Bucc's will have a charge range of 15" with KD - and - Devil Dogs will throw 3 damage dice against that KDed target (if it's a Warjack).
Talon would also be a great choice, it doesn't make KD but it has a charge range of 17" (counting Reach) and can soft the targets DEF.

I also like the Run-and-Gun with Mule but it's expensive and it wastes the Devil Dogs functions, so I would run a min.DD with a Mule just to exploit Sam Pronto.

Trash gives you an additional damage dice against any knocked down model, it doesn't have to be a 'Jack. The limitation on the Dogs is that their Entangle only works on 'jacks and 'beasts. So you can use the Buccaneer to knock down other kinds of models and then Trash them just fine.

    lol @ MagnustheJust.
Wow Magnus... Just...wow... You seriously gave me a dubtee-eff moment there... I still don't know what you're talking about. Maybe that's the point though.

I like the Devil dogs same as I like all the character units. I need to bone up on Macbain so I can get better with him. I like his tier that it gives char units at -1 cost. No complaints there. Devil dogs are deceptively good, and i'm going to start playing with them more. Most people forget they have CRA, so a 3 man CRA is Rat 7 pow 17. I love plowing a warcaster like Kharchev with that. "ha ha, can't be knocked down." Then giving him 3x3 man volleys of slugs to the face. I like Magnus because I snipe them. Rng 8 pow 14 CRA is so nice.

Devil Dogs, as a snacky cake, are two devilsfood cakes with a rich & sweet creme layer between them... kind of like a hot dog with no meat and a ton of sugar.

I completely get it.... it's all about being the same taste with double the calories. Tasty...

I like the DD's a lot as well. While they're specialised, they're not too expensive to use as general speedbumps if the need arises.

Not sure how relevant it is here, but in Menoth lists, Devil Dogs with an Attendant Priest in pKreoss lists are just dirty. Putting Defender's Ward on them is bad enough, but when it comes time for his feat...

Aiyana also has a hip saddle, but her name is at least MILDLY pronounceable
