Default All your base are belong to me. Show off your basing skills for inspiration!

    Hey folks!

I'm going to start a fresh project regarding Mercs under eMagnus (I will probably paint them in Vinters livery) and I would like to do something new and cool with the bases.
I also thought it could be great for others to look at and find inspiration to create their own custom bases.

So far I have done the sand + static grass on my Menites, desert sand and slates (cork and small stones) on my Skorne, and cobblestone on my Highborn-list models.

If you can show off your bases and give me a quick how-to I might get enough inspiration to start, or just steal the idea straight off your examples.

I'm thinking urban ruins or something like that but I'm not sure.

Please help a fellow gamer and hobbyist with some pictures, tips and ideas about bases!

You can see some of the different bases I have been doing for my Khador army in this thread:

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck.

I gave all my characters and warcasters (so far) a more "epic" base, while the troopers and whatnot get more basic bases. When I start my Menoth however, I'm just going to do the basing I have on my Nyss Hunters for everyone. My rationale is that everyone is equal in the eyes of the Lawgiver. Anyway, let's get to the pics!

    First up we have Torch:

    Butcher:

    Eiryss:

And the far more basic (but I still think looks great), Nyss Hunters:

I wasn't too happy how my water effects on the back of the base turned out, but I was pretty happy with the rest of it.

    Wow. Fantastic work guys.

Very cool "trenchy" basing MadMasha, the barbwire looks incredibly detailed, and Torch kicking down the fence is as much a diorama as a wargame mini.
Your Beast-09 is jawdroppingly beautiful ForestZ, from the top to the bottom. Are the rocks made from cork?
Wankel, did you cut out the bottom of the bases to achieve that depth-effect? Looks really cool, I will surely do that with all of my amphibious-models.
You have clearly put much thought and work behind your bases and I must say that I really like your Stormwall-base Postazure, looks very natural and yet dramatic.
Zreef, your extreme bases are truly inspiring, how on earth did you do the ice, it looks super-authentic.
Neatly executed bases Volt_ron, I actually dig the sloaping stone on pEiryss the most, a dramatic base for a dramatic pose on a dramatic model.
And Fellio, wow, both ice-effects and water-effects on the same mini, nice depth-effect on the hind-legs as well, it really looks like it's coming from deeper water.

    Keep 'em coming guys!

Oh how I love that Ol' Rowdy-base. It's so incredibly well executed that it's silly, you sir Ghool are the king of basing.
I really like eEiryss' base, may I ask what simple materials you used to create the leaves and foilage?

I can't compete with Ghool, those are just stunning.

I wanted to base my Merc's on resin bases but after not finding any that I really liked I went about making my own resin base inserts. Base inserts because I wanted to increase my basing area for the models by over hanging the round lip of the base, but not actually go outside the base diameter or build on the round lip in any way really. Easiest way to do that without large undercuts in the mold was to make inserts.

Here is a selection of pictures:

Sunken bases work a treat for bases that you want to have some water on. Just don't rush the water effect whatever medium you are using (like i did), and if you are including foilage I am not too keen on the brass etch variety.

My album on the PP forums has more pics of my completed Merc army. With the exception of Wrongeye and Snapjaw they are all a little bland. My intention was to go back and add grass/moss/greenary/foilage/whatever to add a bit of interest. I just haven't got round to doing that yet.

This one is my latest, it has just had some vines put around the column and is about to be undercoated.

The vines are Army Painter Poison Ivy, and the ferns are Busch(?) which is a hobby train maker.

I have a step by step on the ice effect in my rhulic thread: http://privateerpressforums.com/show...s-the-stunties

If you have any questions feel free to PM and ill help you achieve the same thing. Its actually really easy, but time consuming as it takes a long time to dry and you need to do it in layers.

No no no. No PM's. If you do PM's then only you and he will see the questions and answers. The rest of us wont learn. :-(

But that being said, man those ice walls are damn sweet. Looking up your link on the forum now how to do it. :-)

Even more fantastic bases! Quite a response, and I thank you sincerely.

@Frostaxe: Beautiful little diorama you've got going there, and freehanding fish, that's probably a bit above my skill.

@daveholliday: Awesome resin bases, they look like greek or roman ruins, fantastic work. How did you make them?

@Midnightfox: Great "trenchy" bases you've got going there, it suits the Merc's very well.

@Bloodshovel: The Myrmidon holding the tree in the background is a really good way to incooperate the terrain with the mini, and the bases look very natural, nice job indeed.

@Karl Eller: They look very much alike my Highborn-bases, though you seem to have made them smoother and more rounded, I need to work more on mine.

Yes i did cut them with a dremel, just make a 1 hole with a drill bit and then move the base in a circular fashion so the side of the drill bit cuts it out. then you file and correct mistakes. after that you glue the base ring on plastic card and fill with greenstuff or miliput or whatever the edges so the water effect wount run out. then you do the base and paint it up. last step you add water effect. I use a 2 part clear resin btw.

If you check the pistol wraith you can see how it looks before the water effect is added.

Hope you dont mind me hijacking your thread by asking others how they did their bases :P

I made a ruined temple style stairway for my Protectorate BE. It's a foam shape covered in tiles cut from cork. I might be able to get a better pic up later.

This is a WIP for my first Stormwall.

Pretty straightforward: Plastruct Field Stone cut to fit the base. Built up rubble pile/crater with some cork. Bits were mixed in (Cryx Bonejack wreck -- second Stormwall will feature Khador infantry bits, Precursor shield, Malifaux lamp post, Plastruct girder, Dragonforge gears, random watch parts and Pegasus resin bricks). Flocked with sand and ballast. I've been going urban conflict with my Cygnar. I'm thinking this guy just pounded the Bonejack and took the road and maybe a nearby building with it.

Not the best shot, but did something similar with my Storm Striders. I'm a little more proud of what I'm accomplishing with the Stormwall base now though.

I went extremely low-key with my Mercenary basing...

I used buff colored sand. And then after the glue dried, I washed it with heavily watered down gw dark flesh. Bloodstone would be the closest P3 flavor.

It comes out like this :

The darkness depends on just how much you water down the paint.

    Circle bases

    Merc bases

    The Thornfall bases are roughly:

    Playground sand
