Generalized List questions

So, I have a Warhammer background, and I am still working my way through the rule book. In the overall meta with Warmachines/Hordes, what gets rewarded and what gets punished? I am a fiercely competitive player (but always a good sport and have fun) and I would love to be able to travel to big tournaments and play. So I guess I am looking for some advice on the aforementioned meta, as well as if there are any people who play in the Asheville, NC (or within an hour or so) area.

meta will definetly depend on your location, since different areas have different players. mine for instance is heavy set in cryx, khador and legion, so based on this I know to run mage hunter assassin's, MHSF, etc. and also sentinels for legion. same with player personalities, but there are always gonna be fun players and not so fun players.

I initially got into the game because I want a new game to play that GW isn't ruining. I looked through the models, and decided against the Russian faction because I am tired of painting red models (I play Blood Angels), and started to look at Ret. Then I fell in love with Ret.

Then the best thing happened, I read pages four and five of the rule book, and I am absolutely behind PP. They want to give us gamers a good experience. GW wants our money. Therein lies the difference.
