Default Mountain King ready to play

As I have mentioned, I'm very lucky to have a generous PG, who has given me the opportunity to paint both the SoB and Mountain King before they're even out. He's known as Boots, he writes for Lost Hemisphere, and he asked me to document my paint job on these models to accompany his articles about the models in play. I couldn't resist sharing my Mountain King early. Still waiting to get some basing from Dragonforge, so sorry for the dirty base, but here he is mostly finished.

I should also give a shout to zreef for his burninating inspiration.

Sweet monkey those crystals are gorgeous. Outstanding work; the cloth on the back really stands out as well.

Yay-ty! Happy for the good feedback.

I should have waited for the lightbox and better quality pics, but this way I save the best for Boots' project and still get to share well in advance of it's release.

Edit: Flindo, you invite still stands, c'mon down to visit your southern friends. But know now that I will be watching you like a hawk

    Wow thats beautiful!
I cant help but wish that he was a tad darker but maybe thats just the lighting that makes his flesh color bright. Really nice job.

I think it's bit weird that the chin stones aren't crystals, but damn... that looks good.

    any tutorials?

That crystal look is amazing!!! I am in agreement though about the chin.

Anybody else wonder if this guy keeps his mouth open perpetually as to not gouge his eyes out.

The crystal is perpetual in growth. New growth, fueled by a rage equal to Dhunia's own, continues to displace previous growth. This is represented by blinding yellow at the seams and in crevasses. If you look at the highest points of fiery crystal, where it begins to cool as it becomes further removed from the source, it becomes obsidian and then weathered to a dull grey stone. The principal location of new growth is on the back of the beast and the arms to some extent. The chin represents old growth that's become static and weathered. But I will have to rethink that maybe...

I'll have tips, tricks, and method to the madness layed out in an upcoming Lost Hemisphere article, I'll post here when it's up. Thanks for the interest.

Yeah, I'd definitely be interested in reading how you pulled off that effect. It looks amazing.

AWESOME!!....but i have a few issues with it.... the stone around his chin/mouth not matching all the rest sort of bothers me... also just how the crystals are shown it seems at their bases they are pure white blended with the skin, it shows no shadows or anything of the sort there making it seem rather out of place to me... maybe some blacklining at the edges?

The reddish crystal is amazing. You actually make it look translucent, like a smoky garnet. Also love the cloth. The pastel is muted but somehow also pops (gloss varnish?). How did you pick out the details/depth on the veins/wrinkles/knuckles with such definition? Hit it with a blue wash? If so, you kept the model incredibly clean-looking overall.

I think it's an inner fire sort of deal. The inferno is internal, so the illumination is like a backlighting that eliminates the crystal:skin contrast. Maybe just a bit of black shading beneath the skin line to look like he's being lit up from above...

Exactly clams. I explained that earlier in the thread in more detail.

I'm just finishing an article explaining how I accomplished some of the effects.

And I don't mind repeating that I think the lighting box pics will do him more justice.

    Thanks for the feedback.
