    Default Painting Menofixes

I'm having trouble painting the Menofixes on the smaller Protectorate models. What is the best way to remedy something like this? I know practice will probably make it cleaner, but is there any other way that would make it easier on me?

In the Forces of Warmachine: Protectorate of Menoth book there is a step by step on painting menofixes by hand. Is this what you are referring to or are you referring to the actual sculpted menofixes? There is also a step by step on how to paint those surfaces as well.

If you could elaborate more on the problems you are encountering I'd be more than happy to walk you through it.

Well it's not specifically "painting" in the sense of the coloring and highlighting. I'm speaking of the sculpted menofixes on the models themselves, not freehand (terrible at that). Every time I try to paint them with my #1 brush it seems messy. Either I cover not enough of the area or I cover too much and it looks sloppy. This is on most models, but especially things like Vassal.

Try painting the menofix first and then paint around it and up to it with your base color. That's what I do with the cygnus on Cygnar stuff.

Dry brushing or pseudo dry brushing is your friend here. The trick is to get just a bit of paint on you brush and go over the raised areas. This will get good coverage on the sculpted menofixes. Also "normal" painting will a bit less paint and just touching the menofix will work out pretty well.

Another trick is paint the raised edges with the side of your brush. Hold your brush @ 75-90 degrees of the raised detail and lightly drag the side towards you. You don't want the tip of the brush getting involved at all. The side shouldn't (if the brush is in good condition) have any strands that will affect anything but the raised detail you're painting. Once you get the tip involved it can split over the detail and hit the area under it. Think of running the middle of a pencil down the edge of a table and that should give you the right idea. Just don't overload the brush and you should be fine.

I use a combination of all of these with the addition of a wash on the menofex which settle into the 'join' with a bit more symmetry. as long as the quantity of the wash is the same all the way around you should get the same amount of bleed over onto the flat armor surface. Hope that description is as clear as mud.

These are great and helpful ideas! I thought about doing the Menofix first, but since it's in black I thought it might be more difficult to cover with the Menoth Base. However, I've discovered that just about any color can be covered with enough coats so that's probably my best bet. The wash idea is awesome. I never thought about that.

As for brushes, I'm using a Synthetic/Mongoose W&N Series 7 #2 and #1. So far they hold a point and hold a decent amount of paint. I've been hearing that upon getting a Kolinsky Sable brush people have had massive improvement with painting so I might get a Raphael 8404 and give it a whirl.

Check out Hand Cannon Online. That website has a lot of good info on it and a review of paint brushes.
