    Default Kara Sloan 40pt Competative List NEED HELP

    Hello, I am a fairly new player to the warmachine side of tabletop. I am playing in a 40pt steamroller event in 2 weeks and playing for a Colossal., and would just like some advice on playing Sloan.

    This is what I have at the moment for a list.... any advice and suggestions would be great.

    Kara Sloan
    Hunter (her +6)
    Defender
    Defender
    6 Long Gunman w/ UA
    6 Long Gunman
    32pts

    I have these Models, but haven't decided on them yet
    Charger
    Lancer (seems bad)
    Gallant
    Ironclad
    Defender
    Cyclone


    I am most likely going to be picking up Strangeways, and maybe a Squire. Also thinking about getting some Gun Mages. and maybe the B13.

    HIT ME UP! Any help is appreciated.

    Well I've played kara quite a few times and the problem with her is that people will just full out run their whole army right at you until they are in melee. With the list provided you will likely only get one round of shooting and it can be hard to get everyone in range for the feat for that one turn due to order of operations. While this list will almost certainly kill one or maybe two heavy's on feat turn once that is done you will be spent. You also don't really have any means to hold control points in a steamroller type event.

    The PK's offer a tough fairly quick spell immune screen than you can shoot through and have a badass minifeat. They are great for things like winterguard deathstars etc because they ignore buffs. The b13 are there to offer anti stealth and anti infantry and reinholdts extra shot is awesome for kara. Other models to consider would be Gorman de wulf as he gives stealth to the B13 and weakens tough opponents, Rhupert is great as he can give tough to the PK's, The gun mages are also nice with Kara because of deadeye. Anyway those are my thoughts good luck at the tourny!

    Sorry I guess I sort of ignored the models you have available.. I REALLY recomend picking up rienholdt as he is only like $6 and Kara has a love affair with the little green guy.

    This uses the models you have access too mostly and offers a good deal of denial with the cyclones covering fire or 2d3 pushbacks per turn. Combined with the gun mages you should be able to effectively hold points. Also don't forget how sweet cyclone is at two handed throwing things around. Kara's feat also gives everything an extra die on ranged attack rolls so if you put deadeye on the gun mages and use the cyclone you will havea TON of brutal damage shots or knocked down opponents.

    You really need a melee unit and Precursors + UA are your best bet with Kara since they don't really need any help, they can be hitting for 4D6 on the charge, can be shot through, are immune to magic and can shield wall themselves in objectives.
    I would buy them and Reinholdt then add Gun Mages + UA afterwards

    The only other thing i was thinking is maybe running Strangeways instead of the squire and putting him with a Defender w/ the gun mages.

    That is a very solid list, as i see it you may have two problems though; first being heavily stealth battlegroups the other being incorporeal units as only the gun mages and kara can deal with them. It also should be noted that the PK knights plus UA will be 7 points (min) or 10 points (max). I recomend that you skip the gun mages for now and pick up the B13 as they can provide anti stealth templates for your big guns as well as anti incorporeal options that pack a punch. This will also give you two points left over that should probably be sued for gorman do wulf who can make the B13 stealth and totaly nerf heavy's or on rhupert corvilio the piper of ord as he can make the PK's tough.

    I like your list. I'm not sure i'd put a jack on the ATGM, Kara likes extra jacks for feat turn. I usually go with Defender and two Hunters, their extra RAT makes it easier to not give them focus.
    If you stick with the two Defenders, putting one on the ATGM may be the only way to mitigate your focus problems.

    or my other thought was, drop a defender, pick up a hunter and with the extra 6 points run 6 long gunman

    @KillerFluffyBunny - You've received some pretty good advice in this thread. Taking that to heart, I think you're going to need to modify your list and get as much practice as possible. Try and play against a variety of players in a variety of settings, and make sure that you study the scenarios. More games are lost to a simple misunderstanding of the rules than you'd expect.

    As for the list as it stands:
    -I like Kara with 2 Defenders, so stick with it. That being said, you're going to need to bring Arlan for the additional focus if you're also bringing the Hunter. (Though I wouldn't bring it in this list.)
    -Arlan is a beast under Kara, capable of using a boosted Disruption spray on feat turn, as well as granting evasion to the Defenders, which is a lot better than you'd expect.
    -Eiryss is nice, keep her in there if you're good at guessing distances. Otherwise drop her for points.
    -I'd try and max the Precursors if you really want to bring them. A min unit isn't much of a speed-bump for melee heavy armies. Also, you're going to want to max out your mini-feat usage, so more bodies = more better.
    -Aiyanna & Holt make Kara's list SO much better... Between magical shots on Defenders, to Harm for +2 damage on many many ranged attacks, to stealth and a couple of hand-cannons to get rid of lurkers, they're a great team and an asset to Kara's group.
    -Rhupert Corvolo is pretty vital to the survival of the Precursors... also you're going to need Pathfinder somewhere in the list.

    Here's what you're looking at:

    -Defender x 2 (18)
    -Squire (2)

    Precursor Knights (max) w UA (10)
    The B13 (4)
    Reinholt (1)
    Eiryss (3)
    Gorman (2)
    Rhupert Corvolo (2)
    Aiyanna & Holt (4)
    =40pts

    ... overall, it's not bad, if not a little match-up dependent and gimmicky. Refuge is going to have to be a huge part of your plan... as is learning when to send in the Defenders to melee down a major threat that makes it to your lines. Don't forget that Defenders are very effective melee monsters... especially when paired up with either Aiyanna & Holt's Kiss of Lylyss, or Gorman's Rust bomb... or both.

    I'd be very tempted to max out the PK's or add in the piper to give them tough. Looks like a very solid list to me have you had a chance to try it out yet?

    I played it the other day as it sits 37pt game... rolled the guy playing cryx. Kara's feat when it went off i killed 2 heavy jacks and a light on the same turn. It was very solid and felt very balanced. the PK's ran in and shield walled in front of everything, with Gorman keeping the B13 and eryiss alive to get in and actually kill the caster the turn after... LOVED IT.

    Felt a little behind playing against one of the horde armys, not sure what it was. But still got it in the end. <3 this list just going to play and tweak as i go. the 2 defenders are the scariest thing on the field, especially when they both have 2 shots.

    What do you guys think about a Cannon Crew to finish out the last 3 points in the army list? or just max the PK's?


    Found out that we are also having an 8pt reserve list for some of the scenarios... planning on using Gun Mages or LongGunman.... just feel like it gives me the mobilty and the hitting power haveing them all on the field.

    Personally I like Min Stormlances as reinforcements. That's 7 points so chuck in a Stormsmith as well if you like
