I had some time this morning to work on the swan crest, and I am pretty happy with the results. I was torn between doing the swan blue, or copper, I needed something to break up the colors a bit and give the model some variety. Thanks to Ghoul for brainstorming with me on my options. The way I achieved the results is very simple.

First I started with VGC Brassy Brass. THen I started mixing p3 Battlefield Brown with the brass a little at a time. Each mixing I would "streak" the swan vertically with the new color. I did this until I achieved a nice blotchy looking copper color. At this point I started doing the same "streaking" VMC color's Bright Green, Turquoise Blue, and Sky Grey. After these coats dried I started hitting the edged with a 50/50 mix of Brassy Brass and Battlefield Brown. Finally I took some very thin Battlefield and add some random dark streaks in. I am really digging the effect and I think it does a lot to add a little color into the scheme with out being over powered.

The swan looks outstanding. It really does an outstanding job of adding a bit of extra color. Hope you don't mind that I plan on stealing the color scheme for some terrain pieces I'm building.

Those are some amazing weathering effects! Well done Sir! I've always been partial to the Fort Falk color scheme as well.

Yeah, nice stuff. I knew that heavy patina would add a nice contrast.
    Now, finish it!

One of the ways I would add rust to my rolling stock for model rail road was to spray a layer of clear coat (usually gloss) and then take oil paints -brown, burnt sienna and a couple others that I can't remember and use a tooth pick to add small spots of rust or a paint brush for large areas. I let it "dry" for 15 to 30 minutes. With a little mineral spirits on a flat brush I make a store in the direction. That the rust will travel. Then I let the piece sit for a day or two and then spray some flat coat over it.

If I was just putting rust in a small area I'd dual coat the whole piece and then just recover the rusted area with dull coat.

This is a technique that I'd practice on something else first before doing it on a collosul. If I can find some of my old rolling stock I'll post a picture.

I can't help but think that someone needs to ship Arlan out to Fort Falk for some maintenance...

He's looking great so far, Kommander.

Making more progress, slowly slowly. I have attached the cannons, and hydraulics around the waste. These still need to be weathered and the buffed, so they look a little flat at the moment. I have also posted pictures of the the arm pieces that I am working on at the moment. I think I am going to stop working on the model and switch to the base...I had a bit of a scary moment the other day when I bumped my desk with my leg and the Stomrwall began a journey toward the ground, miraculously I caught it and nothing was broken!! So that tells me that it is time to attach the model to the 2lbs base. So my next updates will most likely have progress shots on the painting and weathering of the base.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback guys, it helps keep me motivated!!

The aging on the brass is just... really really really nice. The entire model looks good but the tarnish is just great.

As many tutorials as you can post on how you did stuff is greatly appreciated. I like the rust a lot! The Yellow cygnar is fantastic and I think I'll be doing my cygnar that way because it just looks too good. I will say that I feel I need a tet**** shot just looking at this guy, but ... yeah.

I'm looking at the brass with weathering in post 48. It's all a little tl;dr at the moment, so I didn't see if you posted tutorials for the copper coils and brass "swan plate."

    Fantastic work. Amazing.

what do you use to stick the pieces of the model to the toothpicks with? I assume it has to be something firm enough to stay in place, but then also not so adhesive that it's a pain to remove.

I drill a hole slightly smaller in diameter than the toothpick. Then I jam the end of the toothpick into the hole and the size difference keeps things nice a tight. In the case that there is not enough material to go very deep, then I just shorten the tip of the toothpick. Lastly, on heavy parts I will use a drop of superglue to hole the toothpick in place.

Well, time for another update. The base is complete, and the model mounted. I really like how it turned out, I think it adds to the the front line fighter look I was going for. I now need to proceed with weathering the feet. All the coloring on the dirt on the base was done with weathering pigments, I want to carry that dusty look up onto the feet and lower legs a well. I may also go back and add a little more filler around the feet to make it look as if the earth is being pushed up around the feet of the Stormwall.

The arms are nearing completion as well, and I think I really only have a few hours left to go before calling the model done! Also, PP has shipped out my replacement head, was not in the box when I bought the model, so I will be able to get that going as well!

Thanks for looking and leaving comments or feedback!

The base is looking very nice, kommander - I take it you won't be adding any trenchers to it?

don't want to hijack this thread as the OP's work is freakin' amazing...but as there's a fair few questions about weathering i thought it might be helpful to some people to link the Kraken project i've been putting up on Youtube via Steamforged that shows a lot of weathering techniques... http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...ature=view_all

anyway, back to the main thread...i love this work, particularly like the yellow main colour colour scheme...looking forward to seeing it completed!

Awesome. I love that it's a diorama and a playable model. You could even take it a step further and modify some trenchers or something to match the basing! They'd fit right in there, I bet . . .

@rippr - if you go back to page 1 I give a pretty in depth step by step on how I achieved this effect. Thanks for looking!

@Jazz - I agree that "modified" trenchers would look cool, but I played around with some stuff I could not really find a pose or one that I liked. So for now, no more work on the base, who know what might happen in the future, I can always go back later and add some stuff in.

Awesome work sir .. because its so perfectly made and detailed my one problem is the trench itself and the XX tons heavy colossal not sinking into the mud nor breaking the wood side. The setup is perfect, now add physics for true perfection

Just wondering did you use the worn effects or heqvy chipping product? and dud you only use a toorhbrush to take it back or do you have other tools? the streaked effect looks great

@ Veneficus - I used both types of liquid. They both produce different effects. THe Heavy chipping comes off much more easily, and creates large areas of ware. The worn effects takes a little more elbow grease to get off, but produces a more subtle and "worm" look. I should mention that those products are not going to work as well with Vallejo and p3 type paints. They are a latex based acrylic and it tends to gum up more than wear off. Tamyia and Humbrol paints are going to give you the best results. Tamyia is what I have used so far.

@engine - Thanks for bringing that up. Some of the comments in the thread about the weathering on the model makes me laugh, in the Forces of Cygnar book there is so much wear and damage that is shown on some of the jacks. When I sent out to do this weathering I tried to imagine what two tractors might look like if they after they had gotten into a scrap....

As far as progress goes, the model is now entirely assembled, and based. I need to start doing some of the fine detail weathering and clean up a few spots. I should be posting final pictures pretty soon!
