I don't really consider myself rushing to Mercs because of Galleon. Before, I was desperately digging in my heals, trying to hold ground as stuff I already owned like Kayazy, Nyss and a host of solos kept pushing me to the allure of Pirates, and Gun Mages, and Renegades. I thought I'd braced myself pretty well to the point where my Mercs couldn't push me over the edge; I just wasn't prepared for Galleon to Drag me down from behind.

Stormwall was wearing Bart's hat so he could disguise himself as Galleon. He's pretty jealous.

lol, why are we using MkI goodies as validation?

In any event, I have MkI Pirates, MkI Magnus Battlebox, Madhammer at release, a bunch of old MkI Merc cards I need to buy MkII updates for (mah metal mule), yadda yadda.

    Am I a real boy yet, cap'n?

All I'm getting from this thread is that I should pick up 2 Galleons, Fiona, Shae, Bart, a Magnus, and I'll have 4 awesome lists but no friends..

    Probably worth it.

For the record, I was heavily playing Bart a few months before Galleon came out, and uber heavily once Galleon came out. The vassalites can vouch for it. I ain't jumping on the bandwagon.

As powerful as it seems, I'm not going to be buying two Galleons. I've played some proxy games with them with Bart and it's just not fun. You end up with such a skew list with such a narrow band of capabilities that the entire game boils down to whether your opponent can counter your list composition or not. If he can't, you win. If he can, you lose. And if I wanted to spend hundreds of dollars just to play a game where the entire outcome was determined basically before deployment is resolved, I'd go buy some Space Marines.

So far, stormwall seems to be the only colossal that synergies with itself. 2x Galleon doesn't really make sense with any of the merc casters that I can see.

It's powerful with Bart. Every turn he upkeeps Hot Shot, casts Batten or Broadside, then recasts Hot Shot onto the second Galleon. It's boring, but powerful.

In testing thus far Hot Shot has been averaging between 4 and 9 effective free focus every turn. That's more output than almost any spell outside of Signs and Portents.

Colossals exist to give the act of assigning three focus to a Tuned-up, SoG Driller practical meaning.

I own three Mules, and if you asked me if I would buy a fourth, I could not honestly say that I would not ever do so. Do I need to see a doctor?

Well, Redlined, Tune-up Drillers are pretty nasty too. Less power output per hit, but another attack(at straight dice, that's about 10-11 from tune-up, so better than the two additional damage over the attacks gained by SoG. You also get a free charge, and SPD 6, so that's a 9.5 threat, which is pretty good. I'd take a Red-lined driller over a SoG driller against a Colossal: the low DEF values mean I can count on that first attack to hit and set up the sustained attacks, charging for free gives me additional threat over an SoG driller, as well as enabling 3 follow on drills(about 52 damage on average dice), while a charging Driller does around 48 damage on average dice. A driller that doesn't charge will dish out 60 Damage.

It's not a huge difference, but it's usefull for knowing if you want to be able to kill the colossal from further than 4.5". I do find SoG drillers handle higher DEF models like casters(Iron Fleshed butcher under the effect of landslide makes for DEF 15, which you can boost once( or tune-up attack rolls to ensure the hit)), or really buffed Heavies in the right circumstances. It's a trade off with the longer threat range and free trample/slam/charge, against the greater POW of the driller.

    @ Driller ...

Am I the only one who remembers, that Merc-Nasty-Ness comes from Synergies and combining seamingly harmless things to be very brutal?

Driller + SoG + Tune DMG + Kiss on Kolossal (+eEyriss taking off ARM Buff) boils down to (Stormwall with ARM 19):

Dice + 4 = 14,5 per Attack (I added eEyriss' 1 pt to the drillers clam) ... so on average 4 attacks should be enough ... so even with the need to spend focus on a charge one should be fine

I can only imagine, since I have been surprised and impressed by the ability of Galleon to make fresh heavies disappear off the board purely at range. Two must be devastating.

Still, from experience I completely concur with what you and Whats82 have said about stormwall being the only colossal where two colossals in one list makes sense. I have never tried two galleons with Bart, it just doesn't feel balanced or flexible. Good to see the experience of others confirms that.

Edit: I have to voice how happy I have been with the beautiful and rugged simplicity of Galleon. I would call him the most purely offensive huge base that has yet to come out. Besides his great melee ability, he can hold his ground and outshoot any of the others, usually forcing a melee option. I hate the randomness of his shots for a model that hugely points invested, wishing he just had a solid four shots. But that is my only complaint. I've gotten over no supersystem or special rules on the weapons, hes just like the other merc stuff. Like a muscle car stripped down of all but the powerful essentials.

To whom exactly does Strength of Granite seem harmless? Or Tune Up? eEiryss, perhaps?

I would phrase that instead as combining a seemingly harmless thing (a standalone Driller) with a pile of scary-*** buffs

This is my problem. I love bart, but he's SUPER 1 dimensional, and the MHSF ignore one of his greatest spells.

You forgot Unearthly Rage (Kharchev). 3 focus to boost everything? That's a minimum of 4 focus per jack and that's everyone in his control.

I've been trying to think of who would dispatch the dual colossal lists fastest. I know 1 guy at our FLaGS is going to be buying 2 Konquests when they release. I need some forge guard or some charging SH H. Cav. I don't know which can do it though. Especially with Hyperion (w/ shield has the most hp).

Bart is less one dimensional now that he appears. He has a few viable builds now, be in colossal and friends, heavy jack phalanx, or a couple jacks and normal infantry loadouts to take advantage of feat.

His feat is really great, its like a big reset button that buys you another turn to advance, shoot, or whatever. He can spray two or three times a turn. Batten you only need to use when your jacks are in real danger, and I rarely use it during feat turn. Broadsides is great at times as well. Deadweight is great since you are bringing wishnailer anyway and folks don't expect to lose a heavy to it for a turn. I even use powder keg at times, mainly to clear my own jacks of engaging infantry. If Bart watching Galleon make heavy after fresh heavy disappear off the board at range is one dimensional, I don't want to leave that dimension

Also: Something relevant about Galleon, to stay on topic. Oh, I know! I'm mad at Galleon because I started mercs deliberately to win with the underdogs and overcome great odds. Galleon makes us far too respectable, its not a challenge anymore

I suppose the sad part for me is that when I finally saw the Galleon's stats, I immediately thought of Broadsides Bart... just like everyone else. Now the hipster part of me is clamoring for me to find a different warcaster to play the Galleon with, just to put my own personal spin on it.

I'm currently thinking of making a list themed around a "wrecking crew", where the Galleon is basically just a big wrecker. Magnus was the first idea for it, since Renegades fit the theme well and Magnus seems suitably gritty. I'm annoyed I can't take Forgeguard in 4-Star, though, so I'm mulling over an alternative version with Macbaine as a Highborne variant -- although then I lose the Renegades. Tsk!

Magnus and a pair of Renegades is absolutely terrifying. KD happens and you're looking at 23" of AOE death or 25" with MacNail. He's also another caster that can do the armor stacking Spiny Growth on the guy if you need to.

    I genuinely couldn't agree more.

I was miffed when I found out there was even a Forces of Warmachine: Mercenaries book. Mercenary armies should only exist as jokey NQ theme lists, surreptitiously photocopied bootlegs, and scrawled on bathroom cubicle walls.

Merc players should resist any attempts by PP to make Mercenaries comparable with proper factions.

    Go Searforge.

@lastspartacus: In short, you are correct. Since Bart buffs jacks and there are things like MHSF and exemplars, the great bears, champions, etc. that wreck heavies in 1 turn fairly easily. Having no way to buff infantry makes me need to bring synergizing infantry like the pirates and solos or steelheads with Rhupert and/or Gorman and Ragman or Aiyanna & Holt. Just to get a little troop action out of them instead of using them like chaff.

In general I can't wait to throw in my Galleon with pMagnus. Upkeeping Snipe for free or temper metal to make him ARM 21. I'm stoked about that! Iron Aggression.

Also Macbain likes jacks, but not too terribly much. so I'd put a Nomad and Galleon in there. Galleon can't get Energizer, but regardless, I'd failsafe the Galleon.

eMagnus will like the Mobility and making the Galleon Spd 7. Calamity to make it Mat and Pow gross...

I just really hope colossals will work in tier lists... I don't think colossals will unless specifically noted.

Something I really need for my sig line from someone who's photoshop savvy is an artwork-ish picture of Bart between two Galleons with a text box saying "Surrender? WHAT?! I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the thundering of cannons!"

Yes. There are a few places they won't, like trolls who often say "non-character dire trolls" or certain lists that specify "Heavy Warjacks" or something like that. The vast majority of the time though, they slip in the "no character warjack" clause just fine though.
