    Default In memory...

On June 29th, my best friend finally lost his fight with cancer.

Dereck Juden didn't come on the PP boards much, so many of you won't know him. But he was a person in the local game groups.
We met in High School and bonded over the usual geeky stuff. Voltron, D&D, computer games... the usual stuff. He had all these little inch-tall soldiers (I had previously flirted a little with Battletech and Car Wars, but cardboard standups were good enough for me for them...) for some weird game called "Fourty-kay" or something. Eventually, reading through the books, I fell in love of the weird, dark, distopian world they were describing. So I asked, and he said "Well, they are coming out with a new version next month. Why don't you go in with me on the box? They'll have all sorts of miniatures in there. So we did and I started playing Orks. That was 2nd ed...
Years later, during the 3.x boom, he got a unusual book of monsters that was completely unlike any of the splatbooks out there. Funky folio-looking, first person narrative, steampunk skeletons and creepy dark fairies. I fell very hard for the first Monsternomicon, and our group played Iron Kingdoms for years straight. Years later, when we found out they were putting out a miniatures game, we were delighted, and once we got the game more or less straight, pretty much shelved our 'Fourty-kay' armies.

Dereck had a massive Cygnar army that he never quite got to work right. He had a smaller Circle army that routinely slapped mine around. He did painting work at our local game stores, and was well known for being a nice, funny, wacky guy with a set of really beautiful miniatures.

Thank you, Dereck. You were awesome. You will be missed.

I demoed one of Dereck's first games with him. He didn't get into Warmachine until Mk II and I was an old hand from Mk. I. He had some amazing painting skills. I am truly sorry for his family's and friend's loss.

To all our friends and loved ones who influence our lives in such profound ways you will never be forgotten and we will miss you always.

For the people who knew Dereck, remember the good times and be happy you had the chance to know such a great guy, and pity the rest of us who will never know him.

    ...except on skill checks.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a friend always sucks, dying young is no good and cancer's a lousy thing.

I am very sorry for your loss. I can understand a little bit of what you are going through right now and it is very rough. My Dad was diagnosed with a terminal cancer earlier this year. He and I have also bonded over geeky stuff. I was his first born so I was his daughter and son to a certain degree. He gave me my first Sci-Fi novel, Starship Troopers. He gifted me my first complete set of Tolkein. He started collecting ACW prepainted miniatures and making dioramas out of them around the time I was introduced to the gaming world. We've been able to share our love of everything geeky together and I dread the day that I have to say good bye. It's coming sooner than I'd like.

It's awesome that you had such a good friend, someone you could be yourself with and have fun. You have plenty of fond memories to look back on. Cherish those. Never forget and always remember. Losing those close to us is the hardest thing we have to go through in life.

From a fellow Swan and Circle player, I hope everything goes well with all of his friends and family.

Dereck, keep that Swan Swagger and that Circle Mystery, bro. We may not have known you, but we were kindred.
