Default How do you do grass?

    Hey guys,

so i've been busy with my gaming table lately, and now i've come to the painting part. I want to do an normal, grassy field for my table and was wondering how do you guys do grass? Do you paint the table green and flock over the paint? Do you just flock? Do you paint sand green (like here)?

From what I have read you can either paint the table green or use flock.

I use static grass, that I shake through a strainer to remove clumps. I bought a GW kit that they make for this purpose. It has paint, a brush, some glue, and two kinds of static grass. I've made one 4' x 4' table with it, and I have plenty of material left over to make at least one more, if not two. I just painted the table brown (after gluing sand to it), then drybrushed with tan. I put my grass right over that, leaving some areas without grass coverage.

In think Devstro has the best plan. Just don`t forget to seal it after your glue dries or it will shed ....forever!

Yeah, I forgot to mention to seal it. After I had the sand layer painted, I sealed it with two coats of glosscote. Then I did the grass and sealed it with two coats of dullcote. Thanks for all the replies guys, I'll think it will be the easiest to just flock it, and then seal the table.

And thanks Devstro, I'll check out the link

There are a few ways in going about it. Depending on the effect my brother is after, here are some core methods that he uses on his gaming tables. (He loves making battlefields and terrain, as well as building and painting armies but not gaming with them.)

1: You can use a combination of a static grass mat with sand painted as earth. Standard static grass is glued to blend the mat and sand together.

2: Paint patches of green and brown on the sand, followed by drybrushed layers of lighter greens and browns.

3: Paint the board brown followed a couple of layers of lighter brown drybrushing. Finish with non-static flock to create patches of grass.

4: Or if you want straight green, drybrush several tones.

I used moss mats available from craft stores. If you want to see how it looks go to http://privateerpressforums.com/show...a-gaming-table. The mats are relatively inexpensive and work great as a grass like field.
