Default How/why did you start playing Protectorate?

    Hey Guys,

Like the title states: 'How/why did you start playing Protectorate?'

After I played a demo game of WarMachine on a holiday I was hooked to the sweet system and awesome looking models, so when I got home I took a look at the system and settled on Khador.

A few days later I went to my local store and started looking at the battleboxed. Even though I thought Khador was it for me I also really liked the Cryx battlebox. After about 30 minutes of pondering a store employee came up to me and started telling me about all Cryx and Khador.

When he finished his story he also picked up the Menoth battlebox and started telling me about warcaster reviving infantry and wracks.. And his detailed story about not dying infantry and man who scream so hard they generate focus is what got me hooked. Such a shame I never used the reclaimer after I read what he could do rule wise...

    Your turn!

I was given the (metal) battle box by my friend who wanted me to start warmachine, a year later he fave the whole group (about 7 of us) a battle box each. I then bought the menoth part of the 2 player battle box and flameguard cleansers.
That's wherr I am now, out of the group I have one if the largest armies.

I think I seriously considered every faction in the game at some point before I finally grabbed the protectorate battlebox, and from what I remember the flamethrowers were what first got me interested in them. For some reason I tend to be drawn to characters/factions that use fire in games.

Writing this I realize that I only have a single flamethrower in any of my lists, and that's eFeora's...

I always play the religious fanatics, and the more fire the better.

I made my first purchases before Apotheosis came out, based only on the original Prime, and as such the High Reclaimer/Severius and the concept of the Chior sold me on the faction for me.

Since then its just got better and better with every expansion, including eFeora, Reznik and the fantastic second Chasis Castigator/Reckoner that i adore.

For me, there was never any doubt, it has to be the Protectorate, but I is not sure why, prehaps it is the crusade theme. So I buy the battlebox, of a Khador player, and it only walk on from that.

@Awarl, do you not use the Repenter?

My Brother got the original black&white Prime back in the day!
Knights exemplar looked like the coolest thing ever.
Only used Exemplar until mk2. Then used them some more!

I had been playing pVayl for a while, mostly because Incite is such a brutally powerful spell, but disliked that I had to get poor pVayl so close to the enemy for it to work. Then I realised the choir did the same thing (and more) and my caster could stand at a safe distance. Then that kinda went bad when I started playing Amon. Still having fun though.

Not lately, though I've been meaning to find a place for one or two somewhere. There are just too many models I like to use more.

My gaming group decided to leave Games Workshop about a year ago and I looked through the art and models of all the factions.

I instantly fell in love with this picture:

... and then found this miniature:

I haven't looked back once. I love my religious fanatics. <3

    2 reasons.

    1) No one else at my LGS was running Protectorate.
    2) Fire. I loved the concept of lighting everything on fire.

Of course, now there are 2 other Protectorate players and none of the list I typically run actually use fire. But I do enjoy my Protectorate.
    Menoth: 215 pts.
    Legion: 185 pts.
    Mercs: 16 pts.

I used to play a variety of GW games with my best mate when we were kids. Eventually I got sick of it for a variety of reasons, but he didn't and still is a keen wargamer. He started to bug me about this new game called Warmachine that apparently addressed all of my concerns, and one day finally (after much nagging) I looked at his copy of Prime and thought Menoth looked cool. When I did finally get around to watching him play some games much much later I pretty much went straight to the LGS and bought a bunch of Menoth stuff. I figured any faction was much the same as another and I had already decided on the Protectorate I guess way back when.

Their heavy gun-jacks and their light gun-jacks (that are more like something in-between lights and heavies, especially with choir), and their army support and knights of all kinds. Also, AOEs and sprays, more often than not with 'fire' tacked on.

I originally started the game with Retribution and favored well-rounded armies that used (mostly ranged) caster assassination plays. Moved on to Khador, favoring hard-hitting melee armies backed up by a little shooting, that were designed to kill the opposing army.

Still trying to figure my way around Protectorate. They are very different from what I'm used to, which would be caster assassinations or straight-up power offenses.

I started WarmaHordes with Legion because I liked the play / visual style. I have always ended up playing "the purple faction who inevitably ignore some rules" in any Tabletop game I've tried (Dark Eldar, Neverborn).

After playing for a few months I wanted to get a second faction to mix things up, preferably one that used focus, so I could see both sides of the game. Menoth seemed to be about the polar opposite of Legion and I enjoy their zealousness. So now I play the Protectorate of Everblight / Legion of Menoth. Can never decide.....

Short Version: Blame Amon, also Fire and Jacks

Long Version: A friend of mine wanted to pick up a miniatures game, and was looking at a few of them. Warmachine had exploded at my LGS in the aftermath of Mark II so I suggested we go that route. We didn't want to overlap, he ended up with Angry Elves, and we had another friend who was potentially interested, who would have went with Circle if he hadn't ended up spending all his money on Magic cards instead. I initially looked at Legion, but after my Warhammer Fantasy Battle days I didn't want more Dark Elf glass cannons. I seriously looked at Skorne, but at the time I decided I didn't particularly like the titan models, and I didn't see a warlock that fit my perceived fighting style. So still poking around the gallery I stumbled across the majesty that is the Amon model, and that hooked me into looking into the Protectorate of Menoth's models. I've always liked fire, I found that I liked the look of nearly all the models in the range, and a synergistic army appealed to me. So I went to my LGS on WarmaHordes night, tried out a demo game to make sure I liked the game (I played Cryx vs Circle iff I recall correctly) I enjoyed myself enough that I immediately went to the counter and bought the PoM battlebox.

Step 1)I be a religious man that doesn't take himself too seriously. Step 2) tired of games workshops crap. Step 3) see new protectorate mk.ii book. Step 4) see Amon Ad-Raza and it was game over from there.

I love knights, so I found the Protectorate visually appealing. I've also always loved the concept of synergy in wargames; I find the idea of bricking everything up in one giant deathstar of DOOM you see in some of the other games distasteful and "cheap". I wanted a challenging army where the whole force would HAVE to work together in order to achieve results, and one that would quickly punish me for mistakes (this is a norm in WM/H, I know, but I still feel that messed up activation order will hurt Protectorate more than just about any other force).

Got into the faction during Escalation. At that time, Protectorate was the king of AOE's (and for the most part, we still are) and I liked the concept of carpet bombing by opponent into submission and then following up with hard hitting knights. And, for the most part, I still do.

Before the game was even released that year, I had decided to play Protectorate. One of the guys in the gaming store had been to Gencon and got a hold of all the battleboxes, back when there were only 4 factions. I tried out each one and was deciding between Cygnar and Protectorate. Cygnar had high tech stuff and Protectorate had fire, religious nuts, and, of course, my main man from MK I, Kreoss. Everyone was looking at Cygnar and Khador, so I went Protectorate.

    I've been checking Join Dates.

There were only two factions available in the pre-order (before battle boxes and Prime were officially released) and I saw the Protectorate.

I like the idea of a faction with absolute conviction, with the total assurance in what they do. You can argue the Protectorate is good or evil, but I was reminded of the Old Testament, and the Jews going out to lay waste to their enemies, root and branch, to the last Amalekite because GOD told them to.

To steal from Robert Jordan, I liked the idea of these people coming out of the desert 'to shake the world with battle.'

I played lots of dead/evil things in my GW days, so I was looking for a friendly "good guy" faction when I got into warmachine.

    Hey, I've made bigger assumptions!

Anyway, the Exemplar Errant, Avatar, High Reclaimer and Vassal models sold me the faction pretty quick. I just found my first purchase recepit the other day of Battlebox, Errants and a Vassal of Menoth from March '10 when I picked up the game. Still haven't picked up the High Reclaimer though.

I really enjoy the playstyle of Protectorate, I had no idea what they did other than be holy and look amazing. Most of the new model releases haven't let me down either (I had a fit when Vindictus and the Bastions were released, way up there on my favorite models list)

I was originally a Legion of Everblight player, who was looking to expand into a Warmachine faction. Initially I had been eyeballing the Retribution after seeing Garyth in NQ, reading about his theme list (*Gasp!* Theme lists? What are those!!), and then getting my hands on the faction book. I took them out for a couple of test drives, but I wasn't quite sold.

I wanted something with a dramatically different playstyle than Legion.

Then I heard that one of the variations of Feora had an ability that kept fire continuous effects going around the clock. I was sold. She could have wound up being a totally crappy model, and I still would have found reasons to put her on the table. The idea of burning away my enemies was just too good to pass up!

So that was really that. I was sold on Epic Feora, and fire that burns. Forever. And since then, I've found more and more reasons to like the faction. I may actually own more Protectorate models than Legion models, at this point.

I had stopped playing miniature wargames after leaving in disgust having invested for years in another company. A friend of mine stopped supporting that company as well, but rather than stop playing all together he went in search of a new game. He found Warmahordes and after bugging me to take a chance I picked up Prime Mk2 and a Menoth Starter set. The Cinerator and Bastion models sold it for me, which is funny seeing that due to a tight budget neither have made their way into my collection yet.

People weren't showing up to the 40k night YEARS ago, and the game store was typically abuzz with a fair amount of chatter about Warmachine, so I decided to give the game a shot. Cygnar and Khador didn't appeal to me, and Cryx I felt was too predictable (I have a habit of gravitating towards the obviously evil factions), and I have a fondness for fanatical holy men (Paladin Alexander Anderson ftw), so I went with Menoth.

Some extremely poor first games turned me off from the game until Mark II, now I mostly play it to give my friends some different options of what to play.

Well, a bunch of guy at work got into the WM, and after a month or so of watching them have all the fun I decided to get in on the action. I didn't want to be the only Hordes army, so I only looked at the WM factions. We had 2 Khador, 2 Cryx, 1 Ret and 1 Protectorate player already in our group, and I thought that 3 of a faction would be too much. The elves didn't interest me, so my real choice was Cygnar or Protectorate.

Protectorate was the clear winner. I was raised Catholic so (like LordSnotrag) tyrannical theocracies turn me on.

That and the divine soul-powered steam driven battlebots.

Oh, and the fact that the supreme leader of the religion (eSevvy) takes the field personally. Even though I haven't played him yet, I just love the idea of a battle pope.

Honestly, I'm not so hot on the religious zeal aspect. I started playing the Protectorate because:

    1. the models look awesome
    2. the playstyle suits me
    3. I'm a tiny bit pyro so the heavy emphasis on fire is nice
    4. strong female characters (important when combined with point #1 since it eliminates most of the other factions)

(not listed in order of importance BTW)

Menoth would be U/W. Denial, Buffing and Board Control. We're not fast enough as a whole to be R. The fire is just a happy side effect of devine will and a small millatary budget.

I just did a $1200 (basically 80% of the models in the faction with a few duplicates) worth of army swap. I traded in my Cygnar and picked up some Protectorate.

I played Cygnar since mk2 and just got tired of the army comp, minus a few casters. Having Rambo casters and units with the equivalent skill of Soviet conscripts got tiring.

My best friend plays Menoth and I fell in love with the models. I got in a few test games with a few factions: Cryx, Menoth, and Ret, and decided on Menoth for the feel. It was a complete change to Cygnar, which plays like a rapier, to Menoth, which plays like a claymore. Cygnar peppers you with pin pricks until you pass out from blood loss and Menoth shoves themselves down your throat and lops off limbs.

It took me a good year to decide which faction to switch to. When I got into the game I dove on Cygnar because: 1) no one else did and 2) I loved the jack models. Little did I learn, and $1200 dollars too late, that Cygnar, despite a few good looking models, just wasn't for me. Luckily I had so good friends that let me try everything out off and on over the past year to make my choice.

Now I am sitting with 200 points worth of Menoth sitting on my desk waiting some paint lol. It is imposing to say the least lol.

Can't wait to get some on the table to burn some heretics .

after a demo game the conversation went like this
"what's the least played faction in the area?"
"well, just play what you want"
    "yea, but which ones"
"... Menoth and Trollbloods, I guess"

I started warmachine, in part due to my experience with warhammer 40k. I was at the gamestore feeling dirty for spending too much on gw shhhstuff and my friend went to get some warmachine stuff. He then talked me into a demo game. I loved it! I saw menoth and I loved how they looked as well as all the FIRE!

I had just finished up playing in the second annual Ard Boyz tournament and had literally wanted to come across the table and beat my opponent bloody over rules disputes. I felt that this was summing up way to many of my games and decided to switch factions. Came in on Warmachine night and saw the ninja aka Knight Exemplar Senechal! Come on, a guy with 2 swords in armor, and then I learned about the rules for him and I was sold, of course this was back in MKI right after he was released so he was pretty spiffy...
