Thread: Maelstrom ETC

  1. #1

    Default Maelstrom ETC

    So, last weekend I took my circle to the ETC which was my first tournament outside Sweden and it was probably the most fun tournament I've ever been to. Our team also managed to place fourth going 5-1 and I got best in faction with 5-1 in wins as well.

    It would be very nice to find out if any of you guys made it there and how you went. I know I talked to someone after the award ceremony, but am sorry to say that I can't remember your name.

    I played Morvhana and it would be awesome to hear what you guys played and what you thought about the weekend.

    I was there!

    I was the ref with Circle, though I only got in 3 games over the weekend on the friday before first games started and saturday evening after tournament games finished.

    Congratulations on the nice result, Golden Arrow!
    I was there. It was my first international tournament as well. The atmosphere was incredible and all my opponents were just great (yes, I needed to create an account just to say that).

    I played Cassius. The pairing system meant I could avoid ranged Legion lists and I think most of my opponents had little idea how the tree-puppet played, so they enjoyed the change.

    Unfortunately Cassius really needs an optimal game to do well - and of course I got stressed and messed most games up for myself, so I went 1-5. It will be better when I get a bit of scenario experience and won't get taken by surprise by 'casters I don't know (like Thyra).

    I saw multiple pKrueger lists. I guess the Stormwall made Lightning Tendrils on Bloodtrackers a popular choice (there was a lot of Stormwalls).

    Dagowit, did you forget to feat while in the little room?

    I took a Kromac list to the ETC, slightly altered from what I took to the Masters. Altered, but not for the better having played the ETC!

    Only snagged one win out of five games (and got a bye in Game 6), though I very nearly snagged a win on CP's in Round 2 against Stryker1 with double Stormwalls (got sloppy and didn't squeeze the maximum space from teleporting my wilder into a zone to score).

    In order, I played against;

    Absylonia Tier 4 (4 heavies with Advance Move / 4 forsaken / 4 shredders plus reinforcements) - Win
    Stryker1 (double Stormwalls / Lancer / B13 / Jr etc) - Loss
    Denny1 (40 odd weapon master or equivalent infantry, I failed an assassination on Denny leaving her on 1 box) - Loss
    Haley2 (Stormwall / Thorn / Gun Mages / B13 etc) - Loss
    Saeryn (2 Angels / Ravagore / Scythean, plus Fury Management) - Loss

    Mostly, I played like a chimp for the weekend and didn't have my head screwed on

    I find some strange measure of comfort in the fact that I wasn't the only one. Let me share my mistakes:

    Game 1: A terrible grind against Kara Sloan. Due to not knowing her, I take out the Gun Mages rather than the Cyclone before Sloan could feat and the B13th clears a zone. He got 2 CP from this yet I managed to grind back up to 2-2 before he finally assassinated Cassius (Wurmwood with souls is very resilient to Rangers and Gun Mages).

    Game 2: This is the game where I forgot to feat (I was wondering if you were the innocent passerby I yelled my frustration at, LEJKaya). Ironically I won as my opponent got overconfident and forgot that he had to go through an Objective rather than a flag, so he could not get to my Shifting Stones and a double shifted Primal'ed Feral got to Rasheth after a Hellmouth drag (even feat and 3 transfers could not save him).

    Game 3: Tried to shift the Feral up to kill Behemoth (Old Witch made him bombard me through the forest). I get Wurmwood just outside of 10" and fail to hit the Feral in the back with my Hellmouth (a Doom Reaver engaged him). This basically costs me the game as the Feral can just sit there, staring angrily at the 'jack before being ripped to shreds.

    Game 4: Was leading on CP when I got assassinated by Thyra. I have never seen her run before and Medelyn Corbeau + Feat + Acrobatics + Grievous Wounds took me by surprise. Charging with Druids to tie up the Exemplar Errants on my feat turn, however, was fun.

    Game 5: Tried to grind through 3 Protectorate heavies plus the Avatar and the Battle Engine. Would have made it if I had not prioritised the wrong 'jack, allowing him to contest with one of the heavies. I also forgot about Enliven as he had not placed a marker for it (I later heard that it was ruled that when you forget things like that, they do not take effect).

    Game 6: My first game against a competent eGaspy player. I think I was winning the attrition war but he charged up and feated to clear a zone, getting 1 CP. I was then forced to go for an assassination. The Primal'ed Feral throwing a Bonejack at Asphyxious went as planned but I messed up on placing Cassius after his charge and had to Unseen Path twice to get LoS for my spell assassination, not leaving me on enough fury to kill the knocked down lich.

    Still, it was a good learning experience and exciting games, so I can't complain (much)

    I was there. I also had a brief discussion with you after the price ceremony as I was the 2nd best in faction and was curious about who beated me for the title.

    Needless to say I played in the finnish team and went 5-1. Against the other swedish team I lost by the smallest of margins making a stupid mistake of not reaving my 4 fury beast while in the middle of a casterkill. I still think if they would've used strength of schedule I would've won the best in faction as we did play the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 11th, and 30-something placed teams. But no worries, I imagine it's a LOT easier to calculate best of faction by CP scored and I do have only myself to blame for my one loss.

    I'm going to write a brief report of my games in the coming days. My eKrueger list is the one in the list section here.

    Oh yeah and our team finished 6/54 which was pretty nice..

    Nice to hear from you guys I will try to write some sort of battle reports as well. I won against eSorcha, eFeora, eHexeris, eNemo and 3Nemo. Both the last lists were double storm wall lists and I killed 3/4 stormwalls which was satisfying :P

    The game I lost was against a Xerxis brick where he swamped the zone on command and control.

    And your team did finish 4/54 which is nice too I would say... I never met any stormwalls but weren't prepared for them either. What did you kill them with and what was your list?

    Yeah, placing fourth was awesome and the fact that our "sister team" from Sweden placed first only made things better.

    My list looked like this:
    Morvahna the Autumnblade (*6pts)
    * Gorax (4pts)
    * Ghetorix (11pts)
    * Megalith (11pts)
    * Warpwolf Stalker (10pts)
    Shifting Stones (2pts)
    * Stone keeper (1pts)
    Shifting Stones (2pts)
    Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew (Leader and 1 Grunt) (1pts)
    Tharn Bloodtrackers (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
    * Nuala the Huntress (2pts)
    Blackclad Wayfarer (2pts)
    Gallows Grove (1pts)
    Gallows Grove (1pts)

    Reinforcements:
    * Tharn Wolf Riders (Leader and 2 Grunts) (6pts)
    * Totem Hunter (3pts)
    * Feralgeist (1pts)

    I am planning to go into more detail in another thread, but the first one (with arcane shield) was killed with me hunters marking it and then charging with all three heavies, one of them primalled. In the second game I killed the first one with a primalled ghetorix with hunters mark (left him on two boxes which I finished with an eruption of life). That one had no armour buff though (he placed electrify on it for some reason...). Then I killed the second one with a frenzy attack from ghetto and charging in with a primaled stalker and megalith with hunters mark again.

    Hey

    I was there as well, with a Kromac list. But sadly I went 2-4. Looking back I could have easily won 5 games, but I'm stupid

    Like the first game I played against the Coven. I put up Bestial, but I forgot I had it on, and I was assasinated by Withershadow Combine and Daragh Wrathe. (I was doing really wel against the coven)

    Wel, many games more with stupid actions from my part

    At least I know its not my list.
    I had:

    Kromac
    *Ghetorix
    *Stalker
    *Pureblood
    *Gorax

    *Full Bloodtrackers
    *Nuala
    *Full Wolfriders

    Reinforcements: *Stalker

    @Golden Arrow

    I like your Morvahna list. It's similar to mine as it has the typical number of beasts and one unit, Bloodtrackers, for Regrowth.

    Nice to hear from others that went to ETC. This year I decided to go with cryx but I was supporting you all mentally. I managed to pull off best of Cryx with 6-0 record and our team placed 11th.

    It was an amazing event and I'd advice to try to get there next year. Only thing I need is Woldwrath...

    I was there, proxying a Woldwrath on the Friday in a 150 point, 2 caster game (not unbound though!).
    Then I betrayed my faction and went 4/2 with 3mo and a Stormwall. On of my losses was to an eKaya tier, which I consider divine retribution for playing with the wrong toys.

    Disapointed to hear you only got 1 win Feiss! Are we going to see you down the CGC some more on our upcoming Saturday events?
    In London? Play WM/H at the Cross Gaming Club! Two club nights per week and monthly tournaments/events!

    I played against eLylyth, slightly one-sided game with eBaldur being immune to most of her stuff.
    Thanks for giving us games though its nice to get some in after watching them all day.

    I'll be one of the Australian players making the long haul over to the OETC this year. I'm hoping to field my new faction (Circle), but my old one still has a strong hold over me (Skorne).

    We've just finished finalising all our travel plans. I think we arrive in Salzburg on the Thursday before the event (after spending a bit of time travelling around the UK), then spending a week split between Prague and Berlin before heading back to the UK and then home.

    This is the first OETC for us. Is there normally a bit of a get together for drinks et al somewhere in Salzburg on the Friday night before it?

    The organisers said that if international teams want to enter, one of the local teams will drop to make room. I think Austria currently has 3-4 teams, so there is room for you an Christian to make a team!

    Last info I got was that France 2, Germany 5 (my team) and Poland 4 are on the waiting lists. But Ruad said, he tries to make room for more teams.

    You just need to find the right people... I hope Polish and Finns will continue a grand tradition of drinking in a hostel basement
