    Default Scrapjack Commission

Hey ladies and gents! Hope all is well. Just wanted to post up a recent commission I finished of Ol' Scrappy. The Old Witch is currently on the bench to be finished this week. I tried it without the weathering, but he just didn't look right, so I bumped him up a tier for free and added some battle damage for the client.

Let me know what you think. Comments and constructive criticism welcome!

Well you are better painter than I am, so what would such comments be worth? You wouldn't comment on Leonardo, would you?

I like the old brass look makes it look like she raided an aristocrat home for parts

I think you should get rid of the legs all together, and replace them with a shopping cart. (light bulb)

Don't feel bad. I get several hundred views on my stuff before anyone posts. If they post at all. People just like browsing the pics and don't feel compelled to comment on every one.

I like your scrapjack though, very neat The weathering in particular is well done.

Haha, well I appreciate the kind words, but I hardly compare to the other painters on this board. Althai, Ghool, Schnauzer, etc... Those are amazing painters. It's weird, I kinda feel like I'm middle of the road, so people that feel they paint worse don't want to comment, but I'm not "super-amazing-awesome" at painting either, so I don't receive the "oh sh*t that makes me want to die" comments either, lol.

In all seriousness though, even if you don't feel you are good at painting, you can still recognize when something is executed well or needs work, and I'm still interested in your viewpoints and criticisms. I'm trying to get better, so any advice you guys can offer is entirely welcome!

    Thanks again!

I think you are off to a great start, but there are a few things that stand out too me. First is the red bed roll. It is the only red color on the model, and as such the eye is immediately drawn to it, there is nothing else to balance out the very striking color. It almost seems to overpowering. The second recommendation would be the patina on the brass/copper surfaces. While the weathering looks good, I don't think it looks right. You have pushed more into the yellows, whereas brass and copper patina pushes more into the greens, browns and oranges. And lastly and this may be do to the red mentioned earlier, there is nothing tying the mini together color wise, it almost feels like the colors clash, and not compliment.

I dont mean to come across harsh, I think you have some skill when it comes to applying the paint, what I point out is meant to help, not bash.

Yes the bed roll seems to have become the focal point of the model with it being such a warm colour. Colour theory is something I am trying very hard to wrap my head around right now. It's amazing how colour can affect the viewer on a subconscious level.
I think if you painted the bed roll a greenish/brown (like an old army bed roll) it might make the brass appear to be in a cooler colour range.

Very nice job on the jack.

Not harsh at all! I really appreciate the feedback. Looking at it now, I can definitely see what you are saying. To be honest, the only reason I picked red was to tie in with the customers existing white and red color scheme. But after looking at it now, perhaps this wasn't the best choice and I should have went with a more neutral tone.

I didn't really do any weathering on the brass other than a brown wash, but I had been considering a patina. I was a bit concerned though, because I haven't really seen any patina on other jacks with the exception of the pirate jacks most people paint and I wasn't sure if it would fit on the scrapjack being he isn't around seawater at all? (although, what do I know? I mean, I suppose exposure to moisture from snow could patina brass as well?)

The customer is happy with the model, but I'll run it by him and see what he thinks. Thank you!

Thank you! I'm definitely in the same boat with you when it comes to color theory. I have a color wheel I use from time to time when there isn't an existing scheme to work off of, simply because I find it hard to pick from the literally millions of colors out there! I appreciate the feedback.

well one thing is for sure, a jack must have some minimum amount of weathering in my opinion as it gives the true feel of a jack that seen even just a few battles in his life and not being a brand new out of the factory feel to it, so yeah this scrapjack looks overall fantastic, one thing i'll suggest is giving a bit of a dark murky wash to the brass as brass tends to gather green corrosion as it ages and as it sees use and wear

Your painting and weathering is great. As mentioned before if that bedroll was just a military green it would match with it's glow and look a lot better overall since it wouldn't be popping out so much. My other critique would be the base needs more love. Its just looks too plain. Maybe scatter the snow around more so it doesn't seem so geometric like there's 3 triangles around him.

Personally, I think the overall effect of the colours is really nice. The fact that the colours are all natural and earthy hues work well, even the red I think is subtle and non-bright enough that it gives the feeling of red earth rather than clashing too much with the browns, greys and whites. The only part I think stands out and clashes is the tiny bit of something blue just beneath the smoke stack.

I also don't like those stiff tufts of grass, I think they look unnatural just on their own with no other vegetation. But that's just me...
