    Default Schnauzer's Stormwall

    Hey everyone,

Here's my first shot at a Colossal. By far the biggest model I've painted so far. Looking forward to doing more Colossals and Gargantuans in the future!

I used the hairspray weathering technique to get the chipped paint effects, and I am mostly happy with how it turned out. I was really rushed for time on this guy (dropping it off in a few hours, actually!) so I didn't have time to do what I wanted with the base. Oh well - still had fun painting him! Please let me know what you think!

    Thanks for looking!
    Andrew

Did you drill out the big guns?

Looks nice man, the bushes across the road of the base look a lil weird, aside from that the overall effect is great, would happily own and show it off if it was mine.

Thanks! I did drill out the guns and the smoke stacks. I think it helps sell the effect.

Yeah, the bushes look weird. Maybe his new owner will let me borrow him after our tournament this weekend and I can tweak that a little. Or a lot.

I did the same to all the pistols in my unit of Long Drongs Slayer Pirates back when I played Warhammer, totally agree that it sells the effect of it being a proper gun barrel.

I think if you also put a lamp post or something on the base it will also help sell the size of the Stormwall and also reinforce the direction the road is going.

    Looks awesome Schnauzer

Definitely a fan of the weathering effects, they look top notch. Also love the drilled out gun barrels and stacks. When I saw the gun barrels, I thought "He should do the smokestacks too, to sell the whole thing" and I scroll down and lo and behold.

Really nice basing as well. Not quite my style, as I normally prefer more nature-based basing (like rocky/muddy/dirty fields) but I have seen a few over-the-top urban environments that seem to be worth it. I'd have to go look it up to see who it was, but someone posted pics of their Stormwall tearing through a gate and I thought it looked pretty good despite being urban. I just don't see putting the time and effort into that kind of base for mine when I'm just as happy with a simple mix of grass/dirt/mud. Especially when it looks like some of the mud has splashed up on the edges of the Stormwalls feet.

If mine looks as good as this, I will be one happy camper.

Just curious did you try/think about boring out the machine gun holes as well? It would take a pretty small drill bit. When I was thinking about it, I was worried it wouldn't line up perfectly across the circular support brace that keeps all the barrels together, and when the drill came out the other side, it would tear up the side of the barrel instead of drill down the middle. The cannons are big enough to have a margin of error, but I'd be worried about the machine guns. Was just curious if you tried it or not, and if so, how it worked out. They're also small enough that even if you did, it would be difficult to notice anyway since most people choose the natural down-ward slant for those guns.

Almost forgot; would you mind putting the pics up in the Stormwall Compilation, and linking this thread?

Bravo sir. Excellent work here. I was wondering if you intentionally left the feet plates off or did they not come with the model. I've heard some stories of mispacks.

Looks very nice indeed. Never noticed how clumsy the stormwall looks from behind before

Great work! I too noticed the feet plates are missing, as well as one of the cygnus shields on the arm. Are these wip shots?

Also i like the basing, it gives me some ideas for my Conquest that I will be starting soon.

It looks great Schauz. I've been seeing so many of these great weathered stormwalls I'm concerned that when I paint mine new and factory-fresh it won't have as much impact.

I also really like how most of the paint is dark, but the coils are a very light/bright blue/white mix. It really adds to the effect that the coils are glowing. Also, I don't know if you did this when you painted, or if it's just the lighting, but it seems like the paint gets slightly lighter closer to the coils, making it seem as if the coils glow is lighting up the paint a bit. Whether it's on purpose or not, I really like it. I'm not normally a fan of "glow effects" that people attempt, like adding orange near a flame on a model, because people tend to go overboard with the orange, and then it just looks like orange paint splattered around the flame. But I think this lightening of shade near the "glowing" piece is a very nice effect.

Accident or not, it looks great

Thanks guys! I did indeed leave the foot plates off intentionally. I thought they looked a little silly. In order to get the arm pose I wanted, I had to leave one Cygnus off. Hopefully it doesn't look too unbalanced.

I didn't try to drill out the barrels on the machine gun, but I may try that on a future Stormwall. I think those pieces were metal, though, so that might be a bit of a pain.

I did indeed do the glow effect on purpose. It was actually pretty quick and easy. I painted the arcane coils white, did a wash of Arcane Blue in the recesses, then did a very light glaze with the airbrush from above which gave a little lighting effect and made the outer portions of the coils looks a little bit blue, too.

    Thanks again!

Am I the only one who wanted the road painted yellow? This makes me think that when I get my stormwall I'm going to write "Tin Man" on the hull in cygnarian runes.

    Looks amazing.

Quick question about the technique: Did you base coat, wash, and highlight all before removing the salt?

Actually didn't use salt on this one (though in doing the salt thing on an Orc bomma for a future YouTube tutorial). I actually just scraped away the paint on top of the hairspray using a toothpick and a q-tip I cut into a pointy tool.

So my process was 1.) prime, 2.) rusty paint (p3 bloodstone, other oranges and brown-reds), 3.) rust pigments, 4.) hairspray, 5.) basecoat, highlights, shades (no washes yet), 6.) dip a toothpick in dilute isopropyl alcohol and scrape away, and 7.) seal with varnish.

I did the Stormwall on camera and will be compiling all the weathering footage into a future tutorial

    Thanks guys!

Looks pretty solid though is it the pictures or am I missing something? The back looks in much better shape as far as lack of rust compared to the front.

I was hoping you had taped it. Looking forward to it.

Ummmm do you have a release date for the video? Not the date you'll be done but the date it'll actuall be up on YouTube for us to watch. I'm sure it'll be available before war room. I think they pushed it back till the launch of the iPhone 5 because of a new button on the side I think. Oh well...

I'm going to go watch that funny video now with the German guy screaming about not having war room yet.

Thanks! Must be the picture -- the back is really filthy and rusty, too. Though there is quite a bit of metallic on the back (though it's dirty metallic). It's a challenge photographing a Colossal after spending a year getting used to photographing minis!

Hmm ... I'd say at least a week or so. This weekend is the Coal and Claw tournament, and then I've got some Cygnar dudes (more Stormwalls!) and Khador dudes (tons of casters!!!!) to paint soon. This one is kind of intimidating because it was such a long process and I've got tons of footage to dig through. I'll certainly be skipping over some of the more basic steps to focus on the weathering, though. And are you serious about War Room?!?!?!?! There's going to be a riot on the General Discussion board!!!

Thanks! I'll see if I can snap off some shots of the Khador army during a game on Sunday. I've been told I'm going to have a heck of a time playing this list with 7-minute turns:

    Karchev
    Behemoth
    Juggernaut
    Kodiak
    5 MOW Shocktroopers
    10 IFP
    Gun Carriage
    War Dog

Sounds like a lot to move in such short time frames. Especially challenging is that I've never used any of these guys in games before! Oh well!

Phenomenal paintjob, as always. But the missing parts make it look weird.

Thanks! I dunno what it is about those foot covers that just don't work for me. They look like shinguards that fell down.

As for the missing Cygnus, I can see where it might look weird if you know it's supposed to be there. But I think of it kind of like a badge or emblem on a uniform -- sometimes they are just on one side.

7 minute time limit will not be to bad on that list. Be sure to know what you want to do with the IFPM and the shock core before you start your turn. I would probably concentrate on getting everything into melee as fast as I can..... run/tow then shield wall and get stuff on objectives. Remember it is hard to win by scenario but easy to loose by it.

Hard to believe its such a new model with all the weathered paint jobs It's getting. Very cool paintjob man. I'd try and retouch the base just a bit.

    Schnauzer,

After seeing that beast in person...it is even more awesome than the picture suggests! Keep it up!
