Default Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim"

An upcoming movie which is apparently all about Kaiju, and even calls them by that exact name, with humans piloting giant robots to fight them. This could either be a godsend or a deathknell to the Monpoc movie; if it performs well at the box office, it could light a fire under Dreamworks to jump on the same bandwagon even if they were dragging their heels, while if it tanks they might well pull the plug on their movie halfway through development. So I figure maybe we ought to be discussing this one.
    Team Covenant name: Mars Elemental.
You know, like an Earth elemental....only from Mars!.

I've heard lots of speculation that this movie (and a new Godzilla movie I think) are the reason DW is waiting on MonPoc. The real speculation is whether it's because they're going to see how these movies do before jumping in with MonPoc or they're just going to sit on the property so that no one can do anything with it and not really bother making a movie ever.

I know the movie poster, or at least a partial shot of the Robots and their drivers has been released. I'm sure some news will leak from SDCC soon.

SO they wear black body suits? Not original. The robots are humanoid, called Jaegers, and have the rocket punch, despite how bad of a weapon it actually is. None of this is new, not even the Jaeger bit. I can make a direct comparison of these guys to a Godzilla monster known as the Jet Jaguar (note the similarity of names). It's a humanoid, size-changing robot. Jaegers incorporate multiple tropes of robotic mechas everywhere, and still don't seem very original. I'm still going to see the film.

So, when/if the DW film gets made, people are going to see it as a cheap rip-off of Del Toro's film?

Probably. But die hard Burton fans will goose it's box-office take a little bit. And who knows, this could do for Kaiju films what Iron Man did for superheroes.
