    Default Hordes MKII?

OK (so call me a cheap b**tard)

Have upgraded my WM books to MKII (2 core books plus the three factions we play. Will pick up Warroom for the other 2 until I start collecting them)

HAVE the old Primal from MKI

THINKING of buying a new starter set for a new horde faction (didn't like my initial buy of trolls)

Between WM MKII and the quick start rules in the Horde Starter Box am I covered or will I really need to pick up Primal MK II?

There are a few ways things differ. Focus vs fury. Overboosting vs transfer. Etc.

QuickStart rules are not enough to anything more than teach you the fundamentals. It doesn't include everything you are going to need. Granted you have prime, so you're covered on power attacks and other shared rules but I am pretty sure primal offers you more.

But as always your to face may vary.

Just to be clear (in case I wasn't). Does Primal offer me more than Quickstart+Prime+MK 1 Primal in respect to rules?

Yes. At the very least it has the full Frenzy rules including target priority for Frenzy attacks.

Sorry to be a pest on this but MK1 did have rules on Frenzy (and I have to believe the Quick start rules in a Hordes box will too since it is a central part of the Hordes "magic system". How else could you play it if there is no consequence for failure to leech enough fury off your warbeasts?).

Let me be specific and see if I am missing something.

    A) Prime and Colossus (MKII) will have most of the rules concerning terrain, LOS, power attacks, units, solos, "abilities" (e.g. Pathfinder, Stealth) as well as magic system (aka focus) unique to WM. That shared rule base allows the games to work together.

    B) The starter set box for Hordes will have Quickstart rules concerning Hordes unique Magic System (Fury and Frenzy)

    C) Primal MKI will have information that might fill in whatever blanks remain A+B

Here is what I am trying to avoid - a purchase of Primal II that covers everything already covered. I already invested well over $200 in MK 1. I know I have $40 looking at me for a faction book.

The Primal MK I book is no longer valid. The basic appearance of many rules remains the same, but the precise wording and interactions have changed. You shouldn't use it for rules.

The Quickstart rules (which come with the battle boxes) give you everything you need to play with a warlock and warbeasts.

The mini rulebook that comes with the Hordes 2 player starter box will contain the complete rules of Primal MK II, just like the mini rulebook that comes with the Warmachine 2 player starter box contains the complete rules of Prime MK II. Neither mini rulebook contains any of the fluff, model entries or artwork of the original books.

Hope that sorts it all out for you.

The quick start rules do not contain the full frenzy rules. The full frenzy rules in Hordes MK2 take up nearly a column and a half of page 74. The Animi and Reaving sections are also incomplete in the quick start rules.

Additionally, you do not need a faction book, but you do need Primal to play.

Oh - and I find to build lists and think about everything I like having the faction book(s). Frankly I have no idea how people play competitively without having studied up on enemy casters. I know most models in WM and I STILL get surprised at my LGS by creative synergies
