Default Bringing the blood to trollbloods!

Hello everyone! some of you may know me from the legion fourms as the creator of the killing time and blowing the dust off threads for legion. with some gifts from a few local players i am now offically a trollblood player. i wanted to take a minut to introduce my self and get to know the active (and non active) fourm posters. I am very active in the fourms and plan to catalog my journey into trollbloods. painting, playinging, and compeating will all be cataloged. it will likely take some time to get things off the ground and get a good understanding of trolls and where i want to go.

I would love ideas, suggestions, advice, and general low down on trolls and the players who love their kreil. id like a idea of what to buy and what to avoid until later. what warlock(s) you would suggest to a veteran warmahoards player. and get an idea of what is curentally competitive with trolls. im looking to dive in head first. i have a e doomy, a mauler a bomber, a swamp troll, a slag troll, and the battle box

thanks in advance, hope to hear from every one when you find the time

I've only been playing for a little under 2 years, but I've given each warlock a fair shake...well, not Borka yet. I have found that Jarl is the absolute most fun to play, because he is, in my opinion, highly adaptable. Also, I love picking off enemy support from afar. I like him with all kinds of combinations of heavies/units. But, mostly play a balanced list. Unit wise, I am in love with the Longriders. Great threat range, boxes, decent armor, and with Horthol their rules improve. Solo wise. I have a Janissa addiction, just about like everybody else. She is just so versatile!

i originally picked up trolls in MKI. Due to some of the issues in MKI i got out of the game ... sold all my models...
originally I had painted the trolls of the same size the same color... so all trollkin were one color and the light trolls were a different and the dires were yet a different color.

later on I got back into warmachine and Hordes with MKII and started picking my trolls up again. this time their skin is ll the same... not the blue from the book, but red(in fact many look very pink). I i decided on a more cohesive looking list. my cloth is not Tartan, just because although I have the skill painting, i don't have the patience. I also have far more models this time... like 5 times the modes...

I have several other armies... I have not really been able to settle on a warmachine army and over the last 3 years have owned them all to some degree. that is probably because I prefer Hordes. I just picked up some circle models from a friend, and have 2 hordes armies now. but my trolls by far outnumber my other armies .

Welcome to the Kriels brother. It all really depends on what your flavor of face smashing is. All of our warlocks are fun to play and add just a little flavor to each list for every player in my opinion. My favorites to play are Borka, Gunnbjorn and pGrissel.

I recently picked up eMadrak recently and he is just pure fun to play. There. Is. So. Much. DEATH!!! lol

For a vet I would say pick up either eMaddy or stick with eDoomy, and if you stick with eDoomy you should pick up Mulg and an EBDT. EBDT is my favorite beast and probably makes it in to 75% of my lists.

It's always nice seeing a Convert come over to the Kriels. Have much fun smashing everyone's heads in.

Buy Fennblades with their UA. They work great on their own and only get better with caster/solo support.
Speaking of solo support get a Fell Caller they are virtually an auto-include if you're running units.

Welcome. I started Trolls at the outset of Hordes, but kind of petered off after when Evolution came out and played mostly WM. I've been playing them consistently since MKII and have liked it a lot, probably because of the flexibility of the army (at this point at least). As we all know, many people start playing WM to play with a bunch of stompy robots, but soon realize that a lot of the time it can be hard a lot to do so successfully. That's where the allure of Hordes comes in, as not only can you use a bunch of beasts to great effect in most list, you often need a decent number of them to utilize the mechanic properly. I've found one of the joys of Trolls is that, with great warrior models (and coincidentally several low fury warlocks) at our disposal as well as great beasts, we have a lot of list building flexibility.

As to what to add to what you've got, I would go for an Earthborn, as no one will argue they're great heavies. That should probably do you for beasts until you round out other parts of the faction. Other than that it depends what you want to play. From your introduction it sounds like you want to immerse yourself in Trolls, so here's what I'd suggest to pick up:

Grim - His feat is stellar, his guns are good and Cross Country is great on Bombers.
Grissel1 - Her fell calls are excellent and a uniquely awesome thing about trolls. Great with troops, but still good with beasts.
If you pick these two up you'll have a nice array of good and different Troll casters (on top of Madrak1 and Doomshaper2, as you already have)

Kriel Stone Bearer unit + UA - The army buff is of course great, but the attachment can be of surprising effectiveness. A lot of people forget that it can run up and remove stealth/incorp, as well as all the other goodies.
Fell Caller - Has some essential buffs that it can give to any warrior models, even your caster. Also standing up stuff with faction-wide tough is never bad.
Chronicler - While not as essential as a Fell Caller, he really makes your units a hassle and, if you make it work, serious beaters when paired with a beast (or two)
Whelps - The essential fury management and also really good blocking/friendly fire magnets.
Single wound unit - Different people prefer Kriels or Fenn Blades, but both are great. I think if you're starting off you only need to choose one, but bring it's worth bringing the full unit with all the trimmings (and the above support solos) for maximum effect.
Multi wound unit - Again, different people have different preferences between the Champs and cav and both are good and worth getting, but you probably only need one to start off with. Note that whichever you pick, their character buddy is worth taking, ie, Horthol for Long Riders and Skaldi for Champs.

Everything else you can probably wait to get later, until you've played with this stuff and found how you prefer to play the faction. Some other things can be really good and get a lot of attention (like Janissa or Burrowers), but aren't essential when starting out. Hope that helps. GL.

Well, if you want to focus on eHoarluk then you will want Mulg, an Earthborn, and a Mauler. Along with Fennblades for a screen.

I'd probably sub out Mauler for Rok at this point but Mauler is still a good beast in that list.

Is it worth coveting the bomber or mauler into Rok?

That's all a matter of preference as those options are all viable. With edoomie, I'd say the bomber fits the least, but with skill you'll put it to good use. You will want the bomber with other casters, so he's a worthwhile build. Don't bother building the blitzer, yet.

You should almost certainly bring at least one beast with a melee damage buff. For that, mauler and rok both work. Personally I like the mauler just for chain attack grab and smash. However, most prefer rok, as he is able to use berzerk+wild agression+goad to grind strait through most infantry formations. Aside from damage buff, rok's animus also gives +2mat, so Primal+ wild agression has most of our beasts hitting 19 on average.

So if you are set on one kit as rok, then I'd say its safe to make the other into a bomber because you will use it eventually. A mauler is slightly redundant with rok. You'll rarely field them together.

IMO, magnetize Rok with the plastic kit so that you can switch between beasts.

You will want a Mauler at some point.

You will want a Bomber at some point.

The Bomber works well in eDoomy, with Refuge. Rok with Doomy is OP. Pretty much any Dire with eDoomy will be good. I frequently take Mauler, Mulg, Rok. But sometimes I go, Bomber, Rok, Mulg.... Rok and Mulg are always in... Bomber, EBDT and Mauler get traded around for that third spot.

The number of beasts that I run is usually 3. Janissa and/or KSB is a good time with eDoomy. EBDT is great with that setup, but he doesn't have to come along... ARM20-21 is pretty nice just by itself.

Edit: This has the added benifit that if you bought a plastic kit to do this with, you would have two Bombers, and while not the best competitive setup at the moment is really swingy and fun! Seriously, try to Bombers out... it's super fantastic. 2x Bombers is a little too much all your eggs in one basket - eLylyth hoses you due to stealth, eKaya does the same, and you have issues with Satyxis Raiders and other guys who shrug off blast damage.

But when you drop bombs on an enemy caster's head for the win, it's totally worth it. It makes me smile when it happens.

I've been playing Trollbloods since MK I Primal! So off the top of my head for 35-50 point play...

In order of Dires that make it into my lists when I want to win:
    #1 EBDT
    2. Bomber
    3. Mulg
    4. Rok
    5. Mauler (get the metal model, plastic is uugg-ly)
    6. Blitzer
    7. Mountain King

Ditto for lights (not sure where Storm Troll will end up in this):
    #1 Pyre
    2. Impaler
    3. Axer
    4. Slag
    5. Bouncer
    6. Winter
    7. Swamp

    Offensive units:
    #1 Burrowers
    2. Fenns w/UA
    3. Champions
    4. Kriel Warriors w/CABERS and UA
    5. Long Riders
    6. Runeshapers
    7. Bushwhackers
    8. Scattergunners
    9. Sluggers

    Defensive/buff models or units:
    #1 KSB + UA
    2. Chronicler
    3. Fell Caller
    4. Runebearer
    5. Janissa

    Others:
    #1 War Wagon
    2. Thumper

There are several Minion units which added really help my Trollblood play (though I usually prefer to be pure Blood):
    #1 Nyss Hunters
    2. Slaugterhousers
    3. Farrow Bonegrinders

    I naturally gravitate towards Grim.
I feel dirty when I play eMadrak, eDoomie, Borka, and sometimes Calandra.
I play eGrissel, Gunnbjorn when playing less experienced players.
I play pGrissel the least because I prefer 'beast heavy lists
I've played pMadrak for so long I only bring him out now for battlebox play and when he comes up in the normal rotation play of all my warlocks.
Still working on my favorite inclusions for Jarl.

If you do end up grabbing the metal model, be aware that there is a Dire Troll Mauler Extreme Sculpt, which is pretty much one of the best models ever. I bought my metal mauler first, and then had to buy the Extreme one... because it's a boss.

Welcome to the Kriels. Most of what others have already said covers what I would say.

I will add this however. I am in the minority I believe, but IMHO Kriel Warriors with their UA and Cabers are better than Fennblades.

This may be personal taste, but their versatility is amazing.

Also Long Riders are simply put the most amazing Cav unit in the game. They are awesome models and are deadly on the tabletop. Make sure you learn exactly how their rules work, but they are BEASTS on the table top. I encourage you to buy full Long Riders and their Solo, Horthol.

As far as units go those are my favorites.

Beasts have been covered but I will +1 to Mulg and Rök being amazing and a lot of fun to play with.

I would say you only feel like your are in the minority because the cost of a full unit of Fenns with UA is approximate $65 whereas the cost of a full unit of Kriel warriors with WA and UA is around $130.

More people have Fenns as a direct result of how much cheaper they are in comparison to our other 'tarpit' unit. Personally I feel Kriel warriors with Caber Tossers are superior to Fenn Blades, but I often run both units at the same time.

I like Fenns + UA against shooting and for engaging annoying units with multiple attacks, like Satyxis. I like KWs against more substantial targets where Knockdown is meaningful, such as Stalkers.

When I knock down a Stalker with a Caber, and ruthlessly slaughter it with a warbeast, an angel gets his wings. Either that, or the Dire Trolls have good eats afterwards. Something like that.
