Default Need some help picking something.

Someone I know is playing Retribution. I know nothing about his available models.

Some background on what hes got (sorry I dont know the names of it all):

    A phoenix,
a light jack that can blink 2" each turn
The heavy jack who stores 3 focus.
    Battlemages
A unit with guns, can combo attack, but also seem very good at combat. (mat 7 I think?)
    Vyros
Rahn (but he doesnt like him)
    Nahn
    A magehunter.

I'm wanting to get him a couple of bits for his army. A new caster, and something else.

Any suggestions? (please quantify with some sort of explination so that I can see why you're suggesting what you do)

    Get him:
    • An Arcanist to help his jacks
    • A Magister for shifty shenanigans
    • Another Mage hunter assassin, because other factions think they're broken.
The only main unit type he seems to be missing are Mage hunters?
you could always get him a unit of them.

Casters are playstyle dependant, but Ravyn is meant to be quite quite good.

The asassins are very nasty... Luckily I run raeks, and raeks love munching on them... nom nom nom.

What (roughly, I guess?) Do the arcanists and magisters do?

Arcanist - is the jack repair guy. Has three special abilities that work on jacks: Repair; Give 1 focus and remove disruption; Give +2 STR.

Magister - Mage solo. Is like the unit, but a solo and better.
Has +1 Mat and magic ability over the unit.
In melee: Has beat back, and combo smite.
In Magic: push pull like the unit, and whipsnap(?) (RNG 6 POW 12, on a hit a friendly model within 3 may move 3)

    Translation:
    Phoenix
    Chimera
    Manticore
    House Shyeel Battle Mages
Mage Hunter Strike Force? (only shooty unit that can melee)
    Dawnlord Vyros Nyarr
    Adeptis Rahn
    Nayl? Narn?
    Mage Hunter Assassin

Only thing I could advise is the Arcanist (preferably 2), possibly a pair of ghost snipers, or a package of rare earth magnets so he can Multydon his Myrmidons.

The gun unit is Invictors. They are MAT 7 RAT 6.

And the Hydra stores 3 focus.

OT: What is your budget for said "couple of bits"?

If he doesn't have Eyriss, that's a staple. You know what she does
ArcanistS are also staples. they help his jacks to awesome levels
Invictor UA is an AWESOME unit attachment. They give the unit snipe for 1 turn, and gives the unit combined arms (see eSorcha's winterguard cadre bonus)

I am with Franz on the Soulless Escort. They are a cheap attachment. He can kill off enemy upkeep spells on the unit he is attached to, cut back spell range for spells tossed his way, and has flank. In addition the models themselves are pretty cheap to pick up if you’re on a budget.

Aside from that magi and arcanist are great like the others said. If you want something with more crunch then pick up a mage hunter strike force or another light jack.

I am guessing from what he has already that he likes to go for the big slugfest scrum in the middle rather then try for assassination.

Yeah, again the Magister and an Arcanist, also a Soulles Escort.

You gotta have Invictors, they are an amazing unit. I would avoid the Mage Hunter Strike Forces because you have to love them to play them.

Also, another heavy kit for the Hydra. Every Ret player should own 1 of each of the heavies, there is no real end to their uses.
