    Default Troll Eyes

What's the best way to do eyes on the Trollblood warbeasts? I'm about 95% finished the warpack, and mostly have some minor touch ups to do. That said, I'm not sure what to do about the eyes. I looked through pictures, and still can't determine whether or not they have pupils, or how to get them looking as good as the PP gallery eyes.

Should I use a darker shade to fill the 'socket' area, then add some white on the eyeball itself, or will that make it look like he has a black eye? Should I paint the eyeball black (if they have pupils)? I'm somewhat lost for this final step...

My trolls will go for red eyes as GW orks are used to have. Fits fine the original blueish trollblood color.
Every eye should have pupils since you can't see without But I don't mind about it if the eye is to small. On greater ones a black dot in the middle and a white reflection pointing upwards are great.

Since my trolls are pale-skinned, it's easy for me to cheat with the eyes. I just paint the entire face with the yellow tones I'm using for skin, up to Menoth White Highlight as the tip, and then put a bit of Chestnut Ink over the eye itself. et voila, a rich brown eye to stand out on the yellow skin.

Looking through some old No Quarter issues I recently bought at eBay, I found a painting guide for trollkin faces in issue #15. PP stuff are painting eys on trollkin same way as human eyes.

There's a disconnect between the setting and the studio.

Officially, in the setting, Trolls and trollkin do not have pupils. They just have milky white orbs in their heads. Check out Adventure Express for a close-up of a trollkin's eye.

The studio paints them the same as human eyes. I say do whatever floats your boat.

What's worked really well for me is the following:

Decide on a color you want the eye to be. ex Red, Green, Blue, whatever
Paint the entire eye socket in a very dark version of the color of your choice.
Then, apply one small dot of a high saturation bright version of your original color. This is the cornea and sort of also mimics the iris.

The high amount of contrast really makes it pop and depending where you put that dot, it drastically alters where your model is looking. You can get a lot of mileage out of this as a friend who used to work at Reaper showed me.

Thanks for the link and everyone's feedback! I'll have to track down that NQ. If it's as helpful as the NQ issue where they show you how to assemble and paint a titan gladiator, it'll be worth looking into. I'll try for a red eye (more Orky!) with the socket painted dark red and see if I can get it to look decent (red ink over a darkened scab red?). Otherwise I'll stick with white.

BTW, who's that redhead in the Adventure Express pic?

Dannon is the woman, Bull is the Trollkin.

I too follow the pupil-less eye. Although, I paint the entire eye a sort of off white and maybe put a slight spoltch of lighter-off-white just to add some depth. I've always hated painted eyes, so with Trollkin, it's a win situation for me!

Pupil-less is the way to go, imho.
