Home Depot to P3 color match for terrain projects.

I have eyeballed a few paints as being reasonable matches to the P3 color scheme. Seeing that most (if not all) the terrain projects in NQ call out P3 paint names, I figure this will be the most cost effective way for folks to utilize those articles to the fullest. I will add more colors as I expand my terrain projects.

I bought these in 8oz sample pots for approx. $4. These pots will go a long way, as you can see here. I still have a CRAP more left too. Sample pots are always flat, so if you get a larger can (only necessary for table-sized projects), make sure you ask for flat finish. No one likes shiny hills.

yeah, Behr is the Home Depot signature paint line. I chose it because they have a plethora of color selections.

For anyone who is not aware, in the UK (I am sure this is available else where in the world) just take in a sample to B&Q or any specialist paint retailer, they will scan it and if there is not a standard colour match they will mix it up there and then for you.

I thought about that, but didn't fully trust the process. Not to say that eyeballing is better, but it gives me a bit of control in the selection process prior to mixing up a batch.

My aim was to provide a consistent set of colors using a standard color code system. This way anyone can ask the clerk without having to scan a personal color swatch each time.

I'm working on putting together a Pantone chart, with a cool little piece of insider technology, for all the P3 paints- that way you can walk into any store and get that specific color for your terrain programs. It's very similar to the technology that they have in the paint stores, but you're not necessarily hindered by brand choice.
Once it's done, I'll have to run it by PP to make sure I'm not violating any sort of copyrights or IP, then I'll make it public for everyone to have

Probably another reason not to do exact color matches (i.e. copyright infringement). I'll run this thread up the chain of command to make sure we're not breaking the law.

Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware and most other places that sell paints can match just about any color if you bring in a sample of the dried paint. I've used all three at one time or another for home-related paint matching and they were spot-on every time. The colors I was matching were really tough too - shades of off white (some with a hint of blue or green) and desert colors. They are limited by the quantity of paint you are buying - there is a minimum amount of each color they can add. They can do more with a gallon than a quart.

However, I've never had much of a problem matching colors using the "standard" array of designer colors which usually have thousands of color combinations. Whatever you do, keep the formula of the ones that work out and you'll always be able to make them again.

Ty very much I have very little time to game or paint, but like doing terrain with my 2 yr old it big and he can actually help. But have cause of the cost of paint. Other materials are scavenged from construction sites I werk on

the other nice thing is, I, Believe it is a latex paint so it also kinda protects some of the more delicate foams

Actually they use a color matrix if you bring the used cans back they have a code that corresponds to their machine so you will allways get the same color after the first

is there any kind of cross reference like this for GW colors? I use a mix of P3 and GW paints on my models, but a friend and I are working on redoing the tables at our LGS. I work in a paint store, and he has GW color names and in the interest of saving time I was hopeing there is a GW reference somewhere.

I'm not aware of one. As it is, most of the terrain articles I read are from NQ and they use P3 naming, so I'm putting the time in for that.

Great I have been expanding my paint supply and I always wondered if there were good alternatives for more expensive modelling paint to work on terrain. I can't wait for more paint equalizations, I guess thats the term to use?

I had a commission order for 32 feet of game board - eight 4x4 table,of 4 different terrain types - that I spent most of the winter leading up to Temple Con working on. I needed two specific colors for general use, and brought color swatches to Home Depot.

The guy recommended the Martha Stewart line if I only needed a quart of each color, mainly because they were only $5.00 each!! And the two colors I needed had a near perfect match in the standard colors, and in flat latex to boot!!

I am not sure if someone has already posted this, but when I have done terrain projects, I bring the paint with me and they can make the color I need to match the sample I brought in.
