Prime vs Epic Warcasters

I'm just starting out in Warmachine and and curious to the difference between prime and epic casters. I understand that the epics are chronologically advanced in the storyline, but are they balanced to play against each other? Looking over their stats it seems like the epic casters have an edge over their prime counterpart.

It used to be that epic casters can only be fielded in 750pt games or above. That restriction is no longer there and every caster can be fielded in any point level.

Epics are not meant to be strictly better, but much different in ability and spells.
