I got into my opponent's head by running as little warrior models as possible, as he knew that I loved Infantry, making his anti-Infantry measures worthless; however, seeing that much Infantry was dautning. Furthermore, pAshpyxious kited me around the map with teleports. It also appears that my opponent is a cheater with 2 points over on that list, so I now call this a moral victory. For two less, he'd have to remove the Bloat Thrall, Necrosurgeon or Saxon, which would have made a difference and possibly put me into a game winning position, as all these models had a role in taking out a vital piece in my small army composition.
I place six models down and then began to pester my opponent about why had hadn't finished his normal deploy yet. I had Karchev starting down the middle objective, which was in a courtyard, with the Koldun Lord and Destroyer off to the side to claim the left objective that was on a hill. I had no illusions, I would need a caster kill, but I wanted to confront his troops rather than hoping that he didn't try to turtle and claim the objectives. Two of the Arc Nodes were positioned in the middle, the other on the left side for the hill. He had his McThralls and Necrosurgeon placed in the middle, being an obvious tarpit. Bile Thralls were on the left, in an attempt to consume my Koldun is my guess. The Banes were between the two squads, ready for any developments. The Bloat Thrall was positioned on the right, looking like it may take up the third objective point. Eiryss deployed before the courtyard, with Saxon Orrik and Ogrun Bokur mirroring my deployment.
I spent the first turn allocating no focus, Karchev activated his turbine, cast Tow and charged at a McThrall, failing his charge by a couple feet. Eiryss ran up to the courtyard's railings, with the Koldun Lord and his marshalled 'jack running towards the hill. Asphyxious forgot to allocate focus, so his Bone Chickens walked towards their destinations. All of his troops ran forward: Biles towards the hill, McThralls towards the courtyard, Necrosurgeon behind the McThralls and Banes behind both squads with Tartarus, ready to support either. Bloat Thrall ran towards the courtyard's right flank, not even attempting to capture the right control point - I now see that he plans for an assassination as well. Saxon Orrik and Ogrun moved up to the courtyard's low walls, doing some real reconnaisance for the McThralls. Asphyxious slapped Scything Touch on his McThralls and Teleported away (no idea why he did this).
I did the easy part first, I had the Koldun Lord advance and Power Boost his 'jack. The Destroyer lobbed a fully boosted shot at the Ogrun Bokur, killing him. Saxon was outside of the blast radius. Eiryss fired a shot at a McThrall, killing him and dispelling Scything Touch. Karchev upkept Tow and Turbine, advanced into the courtyard and landed an Eruption to block LOS to the McThralls. Karchev targeted a few McThralls with Fissure, but only managed to hit one. Karchev finished his activation with Sidearms. Beast advanced, and took slight damage as he walked into the Eruption to block charges to Karchev completely. He Threshered, killing a few McThralls and I was hoping to clear a lane for Karchev to get to Asphyixious but I had underestimated how good of a tarpit they are when backed up with a Necrosurgeon. Drago and Juggernaut repositioned themselves, shielding Karchev from possible retaliation.
My opponent bragged about how he knows Asphyxious' spell list better than eSkarre, as seen by his loss here: http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?t=18310
This was especially ironic, considering this turn. His Bloat Thrall advanced and fired a blast at Eiryss that completely missed. Asphyxious gave Scything Touch to his McThralls but forgot the vital piece in his plan: hitting Beast-09 with Parasite. Orrik gave the McThralls pathfinder, the Necrosurgeon pooped out three and the squad was primed to charge. One charged Karchev, but the rest couldn't due to Beast-09 threatening a freestrike, so they charged Beast-09 instead. Many of them couldn't make the charge due to the Eruption and intervening linear obstacles. Combostriking, his dice were hot and brought the pain to Beast-09 including scoring a critical corrision from Scything Touch. The McThrall attacking Karchev missed due to Sidearms. Seeing Beast-09 heavily hurt, Tartarus charged Beast-09 but rolled Snake Eyes, leaving Beast-09 at 2 HP. Biles advanced onto the Koldun and Destroyer, with two Purging in the hopes of taking out the Koldun. Luckily, Purge is considered a direct hit, which satifies the Iron Wall's ability to push a blow onto his 'jack. The Destroyer was scratched up and corroded, with further Biles hosing the pair down with sprays. Banes shifted towards the hill, but kept an eye on the developments in the courtyard.
Beast-09 went down to 1 HP from corrison, with my opponent asking in glee what system was left. I replied "The Axe," and Threshed his packed McThralls, Tartarus and Orrik. Unfortunately, Tartarus was the only survivor by having Beast-09 miss on the Bane Lord. Koldun Lord waltzed onto the hill, getting into B2B with a Bile before spraying down two Biles and two Banes. My opponent had the Nightwretch parked right in front of Asphyxious, but the Destroyer couldn't maneuver to bring him within LOS, so I walked the Destroyer up to join his Koldun marshall and took a shot at the 'wretch. Destroyer boosted the hit, dealing enough damage to blow out the Arc Node. How lucky! Asphyixious, camping all his focus, was safe from blast damage. Eiryss walked onto the courtyard's control point, and missed her shot against an Arc Node. Juggernaut activated, and killed the McThrall engaging Karchev. Karchev cast Tow, as Sidearms dispelled the upkeep. Karchev moved across the courtyard, ensuring that the Juggernaut would absorb the majority of the charge, leaving Drago fresh. Karchev was trying to get to Asphyxious, but too many Banes stood in his way. Karchev killed a two Banes and one McThrall with another Fissure.
The Necrosurgeon's body count was beginning to get very large, so she had the McThralls move into a threatening position, allowing themselves to replenish. One McThrall ran to engage Eiryss after the Bloat Thrall advanced and fired at Eiryss, wounding her with blast damage. The rest of the McThralls failed to kill Beast-09, rolling snake eyes for all of their attacks. Tartarus landed the killing blow. Tired of the Destroyer picking apart his key pieces, Asphyxious moved Scything Touch onto his relatively untouched Bane squad. Asphyxious ensured that he would not have a repeat performance, debuffing the Juggernaut with Parasite. He Teleported away, placing as much Infantry between himself and Karchev, as well as hiding behind cover. The Banes were issued a charge, killing both the Juggernaut and the wounded Destroyer. The last two Biles purged themselves on the Koldun, as one was insufficient to kill him.
Drago was loaded up with a lot of Focus and proceeded to kill three of the four Banes that came within his reach (no, Drago does not have Reach but that would be pretty sweet). Karchev upkept Tow and pulled himself and Drago into the courtyard, as I wanted to put a linear obstacle between myself and the Banes, forgetting that they had Ghostly. Karchev Fissured again, killing a Stitch and a few Mechanithralls. Eiryss dispatched the McThrall threatening her with ease.
The McThralls couldn't charge over the courtyard's exterior, and instead moved to clog up the way. Tartarus curses Karchev, but ensures to position himself so that Karchev couldn't trample through and deliver Drago. The two remaining Banes charge Karchev into the courtyard, dealing some damage. Bloat Thrall gets into point blank rank of Eiryss, fires his cannon and kills both of them. When it's back at my turn, I realize I can't kill Asphyxious with Tartarus stopping the direct trample. Looking at the scenario, I see that my capture points are at two while my opponent was holding six. If he fails to kill Karchev, which I doubt, he would win my scenario. At this point, I concede.
Thoughts:
eEiryss fail. I don't think it would have mattered, but it would have been nice to remove an Arc Node for a turn, but she sure didn't let my Juggernaut be sent in with focus to trample over his McThralls. Her Arcane Interference came into play against my warjacks too often, but I'm fine with how I played her, as it was my first game with eEiryss.
I'm going to slap my opponent for being a Cryx player, in that he cheats, literally.
Necrosurgeon must die! It's not as crazy as it was in the Field Test, but it really helps the great tarpits that McThralls are. I should thought harder with Karchev and Drago, I have this nagging feeling that I missed something that could have caused me to win, instead of lose. I should remember that models cannot stand on linear obstacles, as that became a huge burden for my four large bases fighting inside the courtyard. Furthermore, I shouldn't have left room for that Bane, as I had struggled with this all game. I should have been more decisive with the game, making a plan to get Karchev into Asphyixous' face, no matter the cost. Otherwise I drown in Infantry. Though I'm not certain that's the case, as Asphyixous is a beast in melee once he pops his feat.
