    Default Question: Villain ranged attacks

We've got one question about a villain with ranged attacks (like the Crossbow Thug).

    Scenario:
A Crossbow Thug stands on one empty space, a hero and another thug on the space next to him.
    Now the Crossbow Thug activates.
He can't use "Set Shot", because the hero is in the same with another thug --> going to "Ranged Attack".

There is a hero in range (but it can't shot at him because of melee).
Will the Crossbow Thug now walk one space (in the same space with the hero and the other Thug) and shoot or will he "Pursue", because the hero is no valid target for "ranged attack"?

    Ranged Attack - which reads:
"If the target hero is within range, the villain attacks the hero with each of his ranged weapons.
If the target hero is out of range by only one space, the villain walks toward the target hero and attacks with each of his ranged weapons."

In this case, here's how it works:

    1. First, the crossbow thug will attempt to follow the Set Shot icon. The hero in the adjacent space is not a valid target for a ranged attack, as explained on page 18 under "Villain Tactics and Targeting": "When a villain makes a ranged attack he can target a hero in his own space, but heroes in other spaces with characters friendly to the attacking villain are not valid targets." Therefore, he will first check whether the next-closest hero is within two spaces, in which case he will hold and attack that hero with aimed ranged attacks.
    2. If there are no other heroes within two spaces, the crossbow thug will attempt to follow the Ranged Attack icon. Once again, the hero in the adjacent space is not a valid target for a ranged attack, as explained on page 18. We know that no other valid targets are within two spaces (because any such target would have been targeted by Set Shot), so we need to find out whether any valid targets are exactly three spaces away. If they are, the crossbow thug will pick one, move one space, and attack that hero with each of his ranged weapons.
    3. If the villain did not move and attack a hero with Ranged Attack, he will attempt to follow the Pursue tactic. Because Pursue does not involve making a ranged attack, the hero in the adjacent space is a valid target, so the crossbow thug will walk into the hero's space and then end his activation.

So that's how it works. If you want crossbow thugs to stop doing this, just use the epic side of the crossbow thug's villain card. Epic crossbow thugs have the Sniper ability, which allows them to make ranged attacks against targets in the same space as friendly characters. An epic crossbow thug in this same situation will follow the Set Shot icon and make a ranged attack against the hero in the adjacent space. Believe me, those attacks add up quick and are no joke!

    Hope this helps. Happy hunting!

    Thanx.
So it is more or less the same situation with "charging out of rough terrain with an enemy nearby" - the villain can't do it, because it is not on his card, but the situation is just "walk and fight (melee or range)" and could simply done. But villains are not THAT simple :-)

It's a little different, but it's similar in that the villain can't follow one tactic because of a particular circumstance and therefore has to move on to the next tactic.
