Default From the Black Heart of TX: Retribution

    Hi all,

I've been painting like a fiend for a while now, but until recently I didn't have my photo studio set up. Actually, I'm not sure I've had it really set up in more than a year. Anyway, I have been plugging away at a new Retribution army in between other projects. It's based on an Adeptis Rahn tier list with a bunch of battle mages (4 units, in fact). So far I've managed to only complete a small portion of it.

    Adeptis Rahn

    Hydra

    Battle Mages

I'm not sure I've gotten the lighting and exposure settings right yet. Things haven't been right with this camera since my last major vacation. Things look a bit dark on this monitor.

What color did you use for their gray/black?

The grays are done with P3 Greatcoat Grey highlighted up with GW Codex Grey and GW Fortress Grey. Blacks are GW Choas Black higlighted with Greatcoat Grey and muted down with P3 Armor Wash.

    Fantastic!
I especially like the source lighting on the mittens.
This is the reason why people shouldnt go with the studio scheme (that and only really superb painters can make a white scheme look good, for "average" painters it just looks plain bad)

I love it. This is definitely one of the best Ret color schemes I've seem. The dark, monochromatic look juxtaposed with a brighter color for the energy was something I was working towards but was never satisfied with. Now I have seen the promised land! Great job. I also really like the forced lighting on the gauntlets and such. Top notch. Be sure to post more as you get it done. :-)

That black is awesome. Having tried to paint some Ulthwe Eldar (I know, I shouldn't swear.) I am just amazed of the way your black looks.

Very nice! It looks a lot like what I'm trying to do, except I'm going with lighter grays. My question is how did you get the glowing to pop so much on the dark colors?

They are mostly P3 Arcane Blue, with highlights of A.B. mixed with white, and then pure white.

BTW, what may be looking black that is attracting so much attention is black... but it's highlighted up with Cryx Bane Base, and then again with Cryx Bane Highlight. At least, I think that is what everyone may be seeing in the cloth portions of the models. Hard for me to tell since the pics look a little dark to me and in my mind I know what they look like.

The glowing effect looks amazing. Probably the best retribution scheme I've seen.

Great color scheme. Never thought to imagine it on the Retribution. Your glow effects are well done. Most who try to do the glow/lighting usually just make it look like someone spray painted the glow color on top of the figure rather than the actual color "effecting" the figure. Nice work. A mainly monochromatic color scheme is hard to pull off sometimes. It runs the risk of looking, underpainted as well as not drawing the eye. However, your execution of the grey shading is so well done that it still catches the eye without the need to insert in contrast or bright colors. Again, very nice.

Ah ha! That is the scheme I've been trying to devise! I've been struggling to figure out something for the budding Retribution army I've got growing here. That dark, monochromatic look would be perfect against the dark cobblestones I am using to base it.

Would you mind if I used this scheme myself? And if not, which metallic did you use for the silver here? (And any tips for making the glows look good into those fine recesses. This is something I'm still trying to learn for my Cryx too)

For love. For honor. For Devilsquid.

Looks excellent. I love the mostly monochromatic color scheme, and think it works great as a whole. The armor plates and the metallics are rather flat looking, though. The cloths are a little better, but as a whole I think they'd benefit from a much sharper gradient, like your blues have. Right now, most of the model looks kind of washed out.

Please, use this scheme. I actually worked it up for a friend who needed something simple.

Regarding the silver metals, they are 100% GW Chainmail.

And for the small recesses, thin paint and a good brush.

I'll be honest, I was a big advocate (and early adopter) of the original PTL on the old forums... but I have no interest in going back and trying to recover links for 7 years worth of figs. This is my first post with pics (I think) since the new forums went live and it didn't even occur to me to start a new PTL entry.

Negative. The armor is all grey. The leather-like joints and collars on the infantry are black. All cloth is essentially cryx bane base.

Very nice. You did a great job on the glow effects, and the color scheme overall is a very effective one. The gray areas do look a bit flat; I think they'd look a lot better if you pushed the highlights a fair bit lighter, and they could use some more shading in places as well. Also, the downward pointing edges and the upward pointing edges are highlighted to the same amount in places; the upward pointing edges should be a fair bit lighter. One final critique: there's something a bit funny going on with the shading on the leader's axe; the downward facing part of the blade is lighter than the side of the blade, which seems odd.
