Did I miss it or has nobody yet pointed out Laris being the Bark Node?

Also, Chip, journeyman is one word, so JWC is gramatically correct vs JMWC.
Me being obnoxious in text form not enough for you? Enjoy even more, now in glorious audio form! Click and enjoy!

Yeah, that's what I thought, but then you have weirdness like EBDT where Earthborn is all one word... Meh, consistency is a funny thing

Also, I promised myself I wouldn't defend my position but the attacks are getting spectacularly personal for a bunch of people who have never met me... I'm fine with a decent percentage of nicknames on this forum, but a few, ESPECIALLY Mittens, irk me as just being cutesy for the sake of being cutesy (Yes, Mages IS shorter then Mittens). I have communicated this rationally and intelligently to a group of adults who know I have a bit of a childish streak. Most chose to respect my request in the same way as we don't call Errants "Soul Counters" any more, but a few haven't, and if they're not going to listen, why should I talk? Besides, there are far better taunts out there...

@Chip, I don't use the nicknames myself those are just ones I posted (I know you were not attacking me on this, just clarifying is all). As for nicknames, I think I only use nicknames for my Protectorate army and mostly the Severius=Sevvy and other more common ones.

As of now, I don't use the common Retribution nicknames, most of the nicknames my Retribution models have earned (Narn, Discordia and a few others) tend to earn nicknames that are censored on the forums.

    I mentioned it.

Random other one that come sup with our area is now and again, when Xerxis gets in melee, a few of us describe it as him showing his kindness. Standard 300 affair

Um, what? Have these "spectacularly personal" attacks been deleted? I certainly don't see any in this thread. The worst I've seen in this thread is a couple of people pointing out that you're portraying yourself as being willing to make the game no fun at all to your opponent (while actually cheating, since you're not declaring any of the things you're doing - you're just moving models and rolling dice) simply because he used a slightly silly nickname. To be perfectly honest, you've made yourself sound childish, and if anyone did that in a game against me, I'd politely pack up my models (no, I wouldn't finish the game) and never play against that person again.

OK, I just checked and yes, a few of them have since I last posted. I'm well aware of how I came across, and I feel I have explained myself - I also flatter myself to think that if I started referring to something by a cutesy nickname and was told it pissed the person I was playing off, I'd stop. Is it so bad to expect a bit of give and take among a group of friends?

Like I say, if the only taunt you can think of is referring to a unit by a stupid nickname, then you're doing it wrong.

    Local ones:

Kara Sloan: Deunan Knute (I'm a huge Appleseed fan)
Cryx: Reapers (due to the way they talk, which reminded a friend of mine of the Reapers in Mass Effect. The fact that the Cryx happened to have a 'jack named Reaper didn't help matters :P)
Trollbloods: Locusts (same fella as above thought they looked like the Locust from Gears of War)

That's all so far, but I'm sure there'll be more

Gunbunnies for the Rhulic lights is fairly common, I think. I've also heard of the Basher called the wrecking ball.

And of course, Pimp Daddy Thagrosh, which must be italicized.

The rest of these, I've no idea if they're general use or just from my store meta.

    Special K - Karchev
    Behemochicken - Behemoth
    The Wh**e - Madelyn Corbeau
Blade of the Retribushun (say it with Sean Connery's accent) - Garryth
The Ice Chick/The Ice B***h - Zerkova or Sorcha
    The soccer ball - Squire
    DJ Thunder - Thunderhead
    Darkwing Duck - Gorman
Captain Plot-Armor - Mangus or Haley
    Captain No-Peripheral-Vision - eVlad
EXPLOSIOOOON! - Durgen Madhammer (from Terry Crews' Old Spice commercials)
Lolipope - Harbinger (might be a holdover from Eberron, which also has one)

We also have Kodiak Moments, which is defined as the look on Stryker's face just before the thrown Ironclad lands on him.

Volley/Dogpile get used for CRA/CMAs, and my WGI unit is The Death Star. Deploying it it usually prefaced by someone observing "That's no moon..." Other Star Wars jokes usually follow during gameplay.

Kreoss, we have decided, is played by Isaiah Mustafa* ("Hello, Warcasters. Look at your god, now back to mine, now back to your god, now back to mine. Sadly, he isn't mine...")

Anytime somebody puts a Driller down on the table, someone is required to shout either "Just who the hell do ya think I am?!" or "ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWA!"

And since we have three people playing Stryker, everything is Caine's fault. Everything.

    * - though in defense of Mr. Mustafa, everything is more awesome if you imagine him narrating it. Seriously, try it sometime.

Warmahordes = Warmachine and Hordes ;-)

And my personal pet hate "Menofixer" (largely as it instantly makes me think of the Monolith Bearer or Reclaimer as they actually hang around with Menofix's . . ) = Vassal Mechanik (Mechanik being such a difficult word to write).

Anyone typing in defense of the use of this jargon should consider how much of an obstacle it is to new players. This forum is intimidating enough without it. It might seem obvious when you've seen every model and/or read all the books but new folk haven't.

Bah. It's not that hard to pick up the slang. I've only been playing a couple of months and I get it just fine. Lurk and learn, read Battlecollege, talk to other players. You pick it up quick.

And this very thread could be a big help, too.

I like the nicknames for when your referring to the game after the fact or using theory machine. But in game the proper names should be used to make things easier for both players, and spectators.

I'm not sure I get the whole mittens thing. Their gauntlets have fingers. Which makes them gloves, not mittens. Mittens by definition have no separate parts for fingers, but instead a single large pocket for the 4 main fingers and a spot for the thumb.

Using Mittens just seems cutesy for the sake of being cutesy at the expense of being accurate.

I've heard someone refer to Kharchev as Optimus.

Most nicknames are convoluted and kinda lame. But the ones that stick are the ones that make sense.

    McThralls - Mechanithralls
    Junior - Journeyman
    Tartarsauce - Tartarus
Kovnik Joe - Kovnik Josef Grigorivitch
    Puppy - Wardog
    DJ - Deathjack
    THead - Thunderhead
    Jug/Juggy - Juggernaut
    Rowdy - Ol' Rowdy
Mittens - Some form of Battle Mage.

And the various acronyms. (IE, TFG, IFP).

As for Mittens, well. I think I may have coined that as a snide remark about how the giant hands of that guy during the retribution cover art reveal. While not technically mittens, they're a bit too goofy to be threatening. And Mittens sounds like somebody's cat.

In our area, we often refer to the Behemoth as Beth. That's going to get confusing once Bethayne comes out, I'm sure we'll call her Beth as well.
Has anyone mentioned Darth Stryker yet?

Focus and Fury makes all the best ones.

    Skornergy=Synergy that does not work.

I think Menofixer is one of the more brilliant examples of community naming (together with Gaspy).

This is probably unique to us but a friend insists on calling Orin Midwinter "techpriest" (we share a background in another popular miniature game).

Locally, one of my friends took to calling Skarre Scary (Skar-re), the GMCA captain I-win and Kreos Dr. No, but that was way back in the day.
Bonejack (with arcnodes) were doomturkey, which lead to the dwarven gun jacks being called boomturkeys for a while.
Nemo was doc brown for a bit.

But nicknames are all about context. I will call mittens mittens when goofing off on the the forums or just BSing. In a game, especially against a stranger or someone who is irritated by nicknames, I make an effort to call him the magister. Unless it is smack talk of course. I shoot the magister with my defender, but Dr. Boom just smacked Mittens down!

Lots of the 'regular' slang has been posted, that is, nicknames and slang that exist throughout the community (or at least the forums).

Slang that never makes it beyond your immediate geek circle is a different matter but they're often funnier (and more obscene).

I call my Battle Mage Magister 'Fisty'. I can't help it, I know it's wrong.

A Cryx player was mentioning his warcaster Mortenebra, and someone thought he said 'Deborah'. So now Mortenebra is Debbie.

An unwritten rule seems to be coming into existence that no one is allowed to mention Dominar Rasheth by his correct name. He has to have a hilarious nickname based on his being fat, like Baron von Lardhoffen or Porkotron or something.

I think pretty much every name or ability is foreshortened or changed (often unnecessarily) in my local gaming group. My favorite one is a local player who got us all in the habit saying anarchist instead of arcanist. But yeah, a lot of gems in this thread.

    Dunno, seems to be working.

Myself, my fave is bone chicken/death chicken/sex chicken for the bone jacks.

Interestingly enough, the reason for Abel = Gun Mage Captain Adept (or GMCA) is cause of caine. When the GMCA first came out caine was the only other "solo" (non unit) gunmage at the time. Since the two of them worked so well together, they became Caine and Abel, like from the bible.

I always thought it was clever

I'm not much of a biblical expert, but I recall Caine and Abel not working so well together.

W've actually got a strange set of slang, and its not related to the models.

Things will will be exploded, generaly, if they dont need dice to kill.

any backward movement is "fleeing" as in "let me flee back behind those trees"
