Table of Contents has been moved here.

Welcome to the General Homebrew Thread!

Feel free to post your creations here - we have a solid core of players who will gladly review and comment on your ideas.

Note: The Warcaster being reviewed in the first few posts is now here - I had to move that post to clear this one for the title page.

Hmm, alright, this guy seems interesting.

Mercenary Warcaster: Need to specify exactly who he will work for. Just "not for cygnar" leaves open his inclusion in a Ret list, etc.

Agenda Warcaster: Can Jaren have Renegades? Most Wanted needs them at certain tier levels. Need to clarify.

Skorne Minion Warcaster: Replace with the text from eMagnus for MKII, 1000 point battle is old.

Zweihander: Trash, probably should make this is the same as the Freebooter's Trash for simplicity's sake.

Great Cleave: Very interesting feat, battlegroup gains Gerlack's ability. I may steal this one...

Raging Steel: Seems a bit much for 2 focus. Compare with Mobility? Seems like either free charge or +2 spd to charge attacks is a 2. Maybe just give him mobility, or pick one effect or the other, or make the spell cost 3.

Flip the Bird: Difficult spell to make work. As currently written unusable, since it requires 4 focus (3 to cast, one to boost) to make the enemy make a check they are likely to pass, and if they pass they get a charge, and it can't be with a model you need to assassinate. Too weak currently. Remove command check and it becomes more usable, although the bullet shield syndrome of an enemy model who can't activate but can engage makes me think you should remove the "no activating next round" part. Still not a spell that'll be cast often.

Spells in general: This guy has a lot of 3 cost spells and no arc nodes in faction. He's got no upkeeps. I think you want to go back through his spell list and re-imagine from scratch. A 6 focus caster (I figure he's a 6 since he's got fighty flavor text) needs a less cumbersome list. Even Bart has one upkeep.

Jaren decided there needed to be a place for this sort of thing, and I agree. Here's my homebrew caster as of 9/17/10, the one that linked me here in the first place. His feat still needs some tweaking. I swear to god I hadn't planned on the name overlap, nor the similarity character-wise... Jaren, I'm looking at YOU!

NOTE: Ballard Cross is very much the first draft of what would become Levitt Ballard, the more balanced final version
    -----------------------------

    BALLARD CROSS
    Mercenary Warcaster

"There's a difference between running away and biding your time, and that man consistently blurs it."
    - Scoutmaster General Rebald

    SPD 6 STR 6 MAT 6 RAT 7 DEF 15 ARM 16 CMD 7 FOC 6
    Damage: 15 Warjack Points: +5

    FEAT: Keep Your Distance
Ballard Cross has learned to channel his survival instincts into a massive wave of magical force that launches his opponents back, staggers them, and causes even the greatest tactical minds to wonder what just happened. The release of all this energy leaves a residue, a shimmering curtain of force that resists those who attempt to close the distance again.

Choose a distance up to 6”. Enemy models currently in Ballard’s control area and LOS are pushed the chosen distance directly away from him. For one round, affected models cannot run or charge.

MERCENARY - This model will work for Cygnar, Cryx, Khador, and the Protectorate.

    SPELLS
Blow the Man Down COST 3 RNG 8 AOE - POW 15 UP No OFF Yes
When a model is hit by Blow the Man Down, it is knocked down. On a critical hit, instead of suffering a normal damage roll a non-incorporeal model is slammed d6” directly away from the spell’s point of origin regardless of its base size. Collateral damage from this slam is POW 15.
Blur COST 2 RNG 6 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF No
Target friendly model/unit gains +3 DEF against enemy ranged and magic attack damage rolls.
Gallows COST 3 RNG 10 AOE - POW 13 UP No OFF Yes
When an enemy model is hit by this attack, it can be pushed d6” directly toward Gallows’ point of origin.
Pursuit COST 2 RNG 8 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF Yes
If target enemy model/unit advances during its activation, immediately after ending its movement one model in this model’s battlegroup that is in its control area can make a full advance.
Redline COST 2 RNG 6 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF No
Target warjack in this model’s battlegroup gains +2 STR and SPD and can run, charge, or make power attack slams or tramples without spending focus. When it ends its activation, it suffers d3 damage points.

    BALLARD
Give 'em the Slip - (*Action) Center a 3˝ AOE on Cross. Models in the AOE other than Cross suffer a POW 6 blast damage roll. After these damage rolls are resolved, Cross can make a full advance. During this movement, Cross cannot be targeted by free strikes.
Sucker! - If this model is directly hit by an enemy ranged attack, choose a friendly living non-incorporeal warrior model within 2” of it to be directly hit instead. The model is automatically hit and suffers all damage and effects.
    Quick Work - RULES?
Willpower - This model may reroll one missed magic attack roll per turn.

    WEAPONS

    Flash RNG10 ROF 1 AOE - POW12
    Magical Weapon
    Attack Type:
    - Thunder Bolt - An enemy model hit is pushed d3” directly away from the attacking model. On a critical hit, the enemy model is knocked down after being pushed.
    - Kneecap - A non-incorporeal enemy model hit suffers -2 SPD for one round.
    - Ricochet - If this attack directly hits, choose a model within 4” of the model hit. The chosen model suffers an unboostable POW 10 magic damage roll. The point of origin for this damage is the model hit.

    Substance POW 6 P+S 12
Beat Back - Immediately after a normal attack with this weapon is resolved during this model’s combat action, the enemy model can be pushed 1” directly away from the attacking model. After the enemy model is pushed, the attacking model can advance up to 1”.
Trash - Gain an additional damage die against knocked down targets.

    Tier List: Sucker Punch
Warjacks: Mercenary non-Privateer non-character warjacks, Buccaneers.
Units: Steelhead units, Greygore Boomhowler & Co., Captain Sam MacHorne and the Devil Dogs, Croe’s Cutthroats.
Solos: Gorman DiWulfe, Kell Bailoch, Ogrun Bokurs, Madelyn Corbeau, Rorsh & Brine, Stannis Brocker.

Tier 1: The army can include only the models listed above.
Benefit: You can redeploy one unit/model after both players have deployed but before the first player’s turn. The redeployed models must be placed on the table in a location they could have been deployed initially.

Tier 2: The army includes Madelyn Corbeau.
Benefit: You gain +1 on your starting roll for the game.

Tier 3: Ballard’s battlegroup includes two or more light warjacks.
Benefit: Warjacks in Ballard’s battlegroup gain Stealth during the first round of the game.

Tier 4: The army includes Rorsh & Brine.
Benefit: Place one wall template anywhere completely within 20” of the back edge of Ballard’s deployment zone after terrain has been place but before either player deploys his army. Wall templates cannot be placed within 3” of another terrain feature. Wall templates are linear obstacles that grant cover.

    ----------------------
I envision Ballard Cross as an unscrupulous individual and opportunist extraordinaire. He used to serve in the basic rank and file of the Cygnar military, all the while nursing his burgeoning sorcerous powers. He would train with warjacks in secret, often to their detriment, and his superiors often wondered why their machines kept failing magnificently on the battlefield even after fresh repairs. Ballard decided early on that life taking orders was not for him, so he stole untold amounts of military resources during his tenure as a soldier, including a Magelock pistol, whose owner, an ATGM lieutenant, he murdered in cold blood. He also had many of his division's bodgers craft a crowbar with a dangerously volatile arcantrik socket that made his stikes enormously powerful against a destabilized enemy.
Ballard secreted away enough materials to start his own small mercenary outfit, but he quickly got all but a few members by placing his own welfare above that of his troops. He also stripped his first handful of jacks of their gears in battle by pushing them to the edge. Enemy commanders remarked, however, that they noticed a singular cunning in the eyes of these machines as they shadowed movements and came out of nowhere to make brutal counters that often ended with both jack and enemy as less than scrap.
Ballard's sorcerous abilities are far greater than even he realizes, as it takes enormous willpower to channel through a Magelock, as well as unleash the torrents of repellant force he uses to dictate the terms of the battlefield. Some say his predilection for keeping enemies at a distance stems from cowardice, and indeed, the man has been known to use his own troops as meat shields. Ballard is not a coward, however, but a master at dictating the terms of engagement, albeit at great cost to anybody but himself. Armies have faced down a force led by Ballard Cross and annihilated it to the man, only to lose track of Cross in the chaos. To date, nobody has managed to capture him, which makes him a perennial favorite hire for those looking for a distraction or flanking force.
Because of his reputation, many mercenaries hiring on for a tour with Ballard ask for the "Cross Tax," or a monetary bonus for truly putting their lives on the line. Cross' contrarian attitude does little to endear him to many employers and employees, but it's hard to argue with throwing such a roguish roadblock at one's enemies. Among his only friends in the mercenary community (those who don't ask for as high of a tax) are those who are either just as unscrupulous, foolhardy, or simply too crazy to care.

EDIT: Raised ARM to 16 (from 15), and raised damage to 15 (from 14).
EDIT: Removed Flash Grenade, replaced with a rule similar to Rorsh and Brine's Diversionary Tactics. Also trying to change Virtuoso to Quick Work, but I don't have any models with that rule available.

Still debating about the feat, though. I like Robert Shephard's idea about d3+3 models slammed, but I worry that maybe it will need a restriction on base size... definitely a restriction to LOS... unboostable... etc.

@ Walter: Most of the issues you point out stem from Mk I to Mk II conversion pains. That and I forgot his stats....needless to say, I'll be updating.
Mostly he's a Most Wanted / Agenda 'caster because he pre-dates Tier lists. I'll give him a set soon.
You should have seen the draft of Flip the Bird. It almost needed it's own card. I agree, still a messy spell but I think I can save it. Maybe. Opposed d6 + CMD rolls might make it feel more taunt-like. Or I could just give him Influence and stop writing new rules for everything
Raging Steel is a typo. It's supposed to be 3 FOC. Originally also imparted a DEF penalty to models who charged. I'm debating putting that back in. Alternately I could drop it for Redline, which is fluffier. I don't want to duplicate any of Magnus' spells, so no Mobility.

@ iknowinternet : Hey, I've been using that PC name for 10 years. I'm looking straight back at YOU Maybe they're distantly related? Cross could be a common family name in Cygnar. Either than or we settle it on the table - 15 pt MM, assassination only.

I realised I hadn't done my usual point by point review of Ballard yet, so here goes:

    BALLARD CROSS

    SPD 6 STR 6 MAT 6 RAT 7 DEF 15 ARM 16 CMD 7 FOC 6
    Damage: 15 Warjack Points: +5
Stats look fine. He needs to be just behind the front line, not in it, and his stats reflect that.

    FEAT: Keep Your Distance
Choose a distance up to 6?. Enemy models currently in Ballard?s control area and LOS are pushed the chosen distance directly away from him. For one round, affected models cannot run or charge.
As I noted in the original thread, the feat looks weak to me. I still like adding the penalties from Landslide into the mix since it's a similar feat. If you change it to a slam/throw effect, I think Crit. Devestation would be a good starting point, rules wise.

MERCENARY - This model will work for Cygnar, Cryx, Khador, and the Protectorate.
Fine except for the Cygnar part. Darn dirty blues.....

    SPELLS
Blow the Man Down COST 3 RNG 8 AOE - POW 15 UP No OFF Yes
When a model is hit by Blow the Man Down, it is knocked down. On a critical hit, instead of suffering a normal damage roll a non-incorporeal model is slammed d6? directly away from the spell?s point of origin regardless of its base size.
When an enemy model is hit by this attack, it can be pushed d6? directly toward Gallows? point of origin.
Pursuit COST 2 RNG 8 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF Yes
If target enemy model/unit advances during its activation, immediately after ending its movement one model in this model?s battlegroup that is in its control area can make a full advance.
Redline COST 2 RNG 6 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF No
Target warjack in this model?s battlegroup gains +2 STR and SPD and can run, charge, or make power attack slams or tramples without spending focus. When it ends its activation, it suffers d3 damage points.
His spell list gives him and his army a lot of mobility and a degree of board control, which is good since Ballard looks like he's all about finesse. It doesn't help him or his army hit any harder though, which could be an issue as Ballard looks like he's all about finesse.

    BALLARD
    Sucker! [...]
    Virtuoso[...]
Willpower: This model can reroll one failed magic attack each turn.
MINOR gripe: I don't "feel" Virtuoso on him the way I do on say Ashlynn or Holt, but that could just be me. Personally I'd go with Point Blank, but either way it doesn't break him.

    WEAPONS
    Flash RNG 6 ROF 1 AOE 3 POW -
Cumbersome - If this model attacks with this weapon during its activation, it cannot attack with another ranged weapon that activation. If this model attacked with another ranged weapon this activation, it cannot attack with this weapon.
Flashbang - This attack causes no damage. Instead, models in the AOE are hit and suffer -2 DEF and MAT for one round.

    Substance RNG10 ROF 1 AOE - POW12
    Magical Weapon
    Attack Type:
    - Thunder Bolt - An enemy model hit is pushed d3? directly away from the attacking model. On a critical hit, the enemy model is knocked down after being pushed.
    - Kneecap - A non-incorporeal enemy model hit suffers -2 SPD for one round.
    - Ricochet - If this attack directly hits, choose a model within 4? of the model hit. The chosen model suffers an unboostable POW 10 magic damage roll. The point of origin for this damage is the model hit.

    Crackdown POW 6 P+S 12
Beat Back - Immediately after a normal attack with this weapon is resolved during this model?s combat action, the enemy model can be pushed 1? directly away from the attacking model. After the enemy model is pushed, the attacking model can advance up to 1?.
Trash - Gain an additional damage die against knocked down targets.
Flash looks underpowered - why throw it when I could just cap a guy? If it caused Blind, it would be a tougher choice. Also consider Rorsh's "Diversionary Tactic". It fits with all his mobility shinanigans.
I'm also not sure what you kindd or weapon you had in mind for Crackdown, i.e. why does it have Trash?

    Tier List: Sucker Punch
Tiers except 3 look good. Buccaneers, Vanguards and Talons ARE awesome 'jacks but Ballard doesn't really bring the pain by himself. First blush BG for him is 2 Nomads and a Vanguard with Sam running a Mule. Might just be a playstyle thing. Needs table play to confirm.

    OVERALL:

I like him. ATM he seems a little lacking in the "Applying Axe to Face" department, but he'll be a slippery one. Also looks like he can clean house in Scenarios involving control of terrain - almost to a Gorten like level of silly. I'd run him. Actually, I'd like to get him into a proxy game or two - with you permission of course.

    -------------------------------

Updated Jaren a bit. Working on tiers and some other thoughts. I've faced up to the fact that "Flip the Bird" is a bad, bad spell. Considering Influence for the spot. Also considering Fury in place of Battle Lust.

Both Warcasters Stats and Fluff Background seems interesting and well thought, but I don't have made enough Battles on the Table to truly judge any Tactical Depths and Game Balance Issue...

    @jaren and @iknowintern...

I wonder if You are interested in some Drawn Sketches (for now Black / White Roughs, but I could also go till Full Colour Images by Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop) for both of these Casters, as I'm busy prepairing some Concept Work to submit to PP Review and I can as well realize Your Ideas and not only mine "Brainstorming"...

Let Me know if the Idea suit You.....

Some concept are for Jaren would be awesome - feel free to do so.

Just for reference, a Zweihander is a two-handed sword. For some reason people I talk to assume it's meant to be an axe.

    @Jaren

I'm quite aware of the Zweinhander Form, Size and Dimensions (I'm a Weapon Collector and owns an Accurate Replica)...

You would like the Great Blade to be more like a Swiss Guard Flambergue Serpentine-Edge, a Scottish Claymore or the "Caspian Battle-Blade" invented by PP Artists (that with the Dulled Point is more akin to an Executioner Sword...) and how much Mechanikal Enhancements "Add-Ons" would You Like.....??

    @ Bringer Of The Void:

I actually own a couple of "Big" swords (a Highland style Claymore and a rediculously large Dai-tou), but no Zweihander. Yet. Anyway, when I originally invisioned the character's backstory he was using a Nomad's Battle Blade. Then I realised how stupid big that would be so I changed my mind. Keep in mind, back then he was a med. base model. I still see him holding a giant Caspian Blade though. Or, if you ever played the first "Fable" game, their treatment of the greatsword was something I liked. As far as Mechanikal add-ons, I really dig the look of Shae's sword (Squall, I think) from the Merc book art - it's obviously been enhanced, but it's not over the top.

    @Jaren

O.K. so I will draw it as a Nomad Blade properly downgraded to human size (the Dragonslayer Blade of Guts of Berserker Manga or Cloud Strife kind of Materia Blade may be are the largest and heaviest of the possibility even inside "Fantasy Media") and with just a touch of Mechanikal enhancements like Shae's Cutlass...

As for the Warcaster Armour I will envison a cross between PStryker Steam Suit (even if not so shiny and perfect) and the Rag-Tag ones of Magnus and Drake McBain (as I believe it went renegade from a short time) may be covered with an Armored Apron or Reinforced Trench Coat; other Details that You want to have...??

Especially the Face (square-jawed ? Large chin ? Broad nose ?) and Hairstyle (Crew Cut ? Long Ponytail ?) and other little personal quirks, like a Personal Banner or Heraldry Image and so on.....

    @ Bringer Of The Void:

For Heraldry, Vinter's Cygnus (though worn) on his armour would be fine. We seem to be on the same page as far as the armour itself, so I'll leave that to you.

I'm honestly useless at faces. I can't even describe people I see every day. All I see for Jaren is a military crew cut that's been allowed to grow out and some stubble.

    @Jaren

Also I think that Yours Character must show that is a more recent AWOL Cygnaran that "Went Native" with Vinter's Loyalists, so I will try to portrait him as a not-so disheveled Merc Caster like its Mentor, Ashet Magnus, that truly embody "Rusty Platings and Tattered Cloaks"...

As for the Steam Engine Backpack I think to represent it with two diverging splayed smokestacks (Ironclad Chassis Style) with a Hook between them allowing easy carrying, storing away and quick-drawing (for an overhead slash) the Mechanikal Zweinhander...

Cold also be interesting a kind of Quick-Draw holster for its Handcannon, and this maybe structured after a "Leopard" (the Term refers to Italian Mafia's "Lupara" that is a Twin-Barrelled Sawed-Off Pistol-Grip Shotgun) that could convey a Graphic Idea of "Rugged Desert Veteran Survivalist"...

If You plan to eventually "Custom Build" this Homemade Warcaster from an extant Privateer Press Miniature there is some Specific Piece should I consider in planning the Concpt Art.....???

@BOTV Hell, yes I'd love to see some character art for this guy! He's not all that fleshed out in the visuals department... so it's your playground!
I see him as being... unpleasant in demeanor. His weapon Crackdown is an oversized crowbar with an arcantrik socket in it somewhere. His modified magelock is just that, but with something that shows he bodged it to get a little more oomph. He ought to look like he's carrying some tricks up his sleeve (ie a grenade). His sorcery is also related almost entirely to untapped, uncontrolled outbursts of shimmering force.

Other than that... blank slate! Your call on the warcaster armor, but I see it as being pretty roughshod. An armored greatcoat would be pretty cool, too.

    @Jaren
Good ideas, all. I realize he doesn't have much hitting power, but never underestimate a redlined jack. He is more about finesse than anything.
The reason he has Virtuoso, but not Point Blank or Gunfighter, is for the weird rules interaction of his Beat Back ability. If he's in melee with anything besides a reach model (which you don't want), you first smack them with Crackdown, knock them back an inch, DON'T follow up, and take a Thunderbolt shot to make sure they're out of range. I considered giving him a bushwhack ability so he could do this and then skedaddle.
The Grenade could be slightly underpowered. It originally gave Blind, but it felt like a bit much in the same faction as Gorman. Then again, eMorgs does have a feat that just blinds everything...
I don't have Rorsh's rules available, so I can't add the Diversionary Tactics. Quick reminder of what it does (in general)?

Oh and full permission to proxy him as long as you let me know how it goes (esp. in regards to the feat).

    @ BOTV:
I'm not much of a model builder, so I'll most likely just find a cool looking mini with a big sword. I do really like Saxon Orrik's model - if he had steam armour and a big sword.
The armour and holster design ideas sound great - can't wait to see it!

    @ IKI:
As long as he's in melee with a non-reach opponent, couldn't he accomplish the same thing with a variation on Quick Work? Just change the "destroys" part to "hits with".
The only reason I brought up Virtuoso is that it feels wrong given the fluff. I can't really be more specific than that, sorry. Like I said, it's a minor gripe.
Diversionary Tactic from the Hordes PDF (may have changed in Primal / FoH - Minions):
(*Action) Center a 4˝ AOE on Rorsh. Models in the AOE other than Rorsh and Brine suffer a POW 6 blast damage roll. After these damage rolls are resolved, Rorsh can make a full advance. If Brine was also in the AOE, it can make a full advance as well. During this movement, Rorsh and Brine cannot be targeted by free strikes.

    @Jaren and @iknowinternet

It seems that both of You like the First Image Suggestions that I made about Warcaster Concept Art...

Maybe I should draw Two similar Rough Sketches (one armed with the Zweinhander and the other with the Mechanikal Crowbar) and from there we will start to add little details to differentiate them clearly...

As Ballard Cross "Graphic Ideas" could be ispired, maybe (judging from the Crowbar) some Hints to Dr.Freeman of Half-Life Videogame could be interesting; after all are two similar Warrior-Scientists with Enhancing Hi-Tech Armour fighting and surviving against all odds.....

I'd certainly post some ideas for a couple Mercenary warcasters here based on a game campaign I never got to run. But as I wouldn't know where to begin, beyond name and general concept, I'll likely refrain so as not to embarrass myself. Meantime, I'll enjoy the warcasters up for now, which I like.

I would love a second Agenda tier caster. Yours is great.

    @ Feverdream:
Check out the IKWIKI (link is in my sig and the first post) for a great place to start. And don't hold back in here! If it's broken, we'll help you work it out.

Well then! Let me give it a shot. And thanks for the Wiki link!

The general concept is a Talion Charter-esque group of people who at times travel together, but if individual opportunities knock, they'll part ways. Rather than them being Privateers, they are...

The Wernitov Family New Umbrean Sideshow. Perhaps the oldest of any traveling show in Immoren, the Wernitov Circus has been home to many a misfit from the various nations. Adventurous folk, freaks, and whatnot have found a place at the Wernitov table, and have been able to live a life of general peace. But lately, that's definitely not the case.

The Wernitovs have found themselves hosting more and more refugees, and many cities where they once drew thousands of spectators are impossible to enter thanks to these wars. The Wernitovs themselves are very caring people, and with so many mouths to feed now, supplies are stretched thin. In order to keep the Wernitov Family promise to those in their care, a few of the more gifted types have taken to hiring themselves out as mercenaries.

The Wernitovs have had access to laborjacks for some time, as they have proved very useful in transporting the show from
country to country. Learning of the modifications other mercenary groups have made enabled them to field a decent, but by no means impressive, amount of "warjacks".

    ==============================================

Preliminary Notes: The first warcaster concept is, of course, a support caster. Not a melee combatant in the least. The concept is an Umbrean illusionist who, as his school of magical study would imply, will more often than not set up an assassination run for another model/unit in the army. The idea is that he's very squishy, along the lines of pSeverius, so he's not going to be in the front lines if he can help it. Also, since he's an illusionist, he's going to be concentrating on keeping up the illusions, so he'll have a low command score to reflect that. Oh yeah, and since most factions have a caster that drags along a "pet" (Mortenebra, Old Witch, Darius, Zaal, Borka, eKaya), why not have a Mercenary caster with one...

Ysmen the Illustrious, Master of Illusion
    Sideshow Mercenary Warcaster

    Now you see us...

Ysmen Nikolai Wernitov was one of the few Wernitovs lucky enough to be born with a brain for wizardry. He was left in Merywyn, Llael, to study at one of the most respected arcane colleges in Western Immoren. He was considered quite a prodigy, learning everything rather quickly. It also should come as no surprise that a member of a circus family would be so adept at the magics of Illusion. Such spells were practically second nature to him. Of course, knowing how to cast effective illusions is one thing, using them to play pranks on students and faculty is another. And when you prank the wrong person...

Well, shortly thereafter Ysmen found himself on the streets, with only the clothes on his back and his book of spells. He decided to get back to his Umbrean roots and traveled to Laedry, where he would spend most of his time earning coin as a street performer entertaining children.

And then Khador invaded. Could anyone get more down on their luck?

Now everything in his life has been crushed around him, Ysmen traveled the countryside, living off whatever scraps he could to survive. While in Ord, fortune smiled upon him as he found his way back to the circus. His suffering, along with the suffering of the people taking refuge with the circus, somehow triggered an empathy with all things around him... including the cortexes of the laborjacks all around him...

    FEAT: Smoke and Mirrors
Ysmen is a master of misdirection and phantasm. In his brief experience as a warcaster, Ysmen has quickly learned how to "set the stage" on the battlefield. He makes sure that the enemy sees what he wants them to see. What may seem like a small, easily crushed band of warriors suddenly appears to be an army. Enemies will strike at these illusionary fighters only to find themselves stabbing at shadows. It may be too late before they discover who the real fighters are.

"Friendly models in Ysmen's control area gain +2 DEF against melee attacks. Whenever an enemy attack misses a friendly model in Ysmen's control area, Ysmen's controller may place the targetted model up to 3" from its current location. A model may only be moved once per turn as a result of Smoke and Mirrors. Smoke and mirrors lasts for one round."

    Calliope
    Mercenary Sideshow Character Light Warjack

The various members of the Wernitov Sideshow have learned to scavenge for parts like the best of them. And it helps they also have a few gobber bodgers helping out. One leg of their journey took them past a battlefield, and thereupon was a nearly-intact Protectorate Repenter Warjack. Sure, it needed some repairs, and the cortex was utterly fried, but it wouldn't take the crew very long to slap some new parts on it and get it up and running again. One of the more "artistic" (read: half-insane) arcane mechanics decided to use parts from one of the old steam organs that the musicians would play during a performance, and after removing the flamethrower and fitting the 'jack with the arm of a Buccaneer, the warjack known as Calliope was created. The refurbished cortex installed did have a few quirks, but Ysmen found he could easily keep it in check. As Ysmen is a fairly new warcaster himself, he was never told about having to "reset" the cortex, and as such, Calliope has been developing strange behavioral quirks, as well as a complete dependence on Ysmen. "She" won't allow anyone to control her but Ysmen, and has been known to destroy the wagons and other pieces of property if someone else tries to command her.

    SPD - 5, STR - 8, MAT - 6(7?), RAT - 4, DEF - 13, ARM - 16

Companion [Ysmen] - This warjack is included in the battlegroup for Ysmen the Illustrious.
Warjack Bond [Baneful] - While this model's controller is engaged, this model may charge without spending a focus point and gains +2 on melee attack and melee damage rolls. At the start of its activation, if this model has LOS to one or more enemy models engaging its controller, it must charge one of those enemy models.

    WEAPONS
    Left Hook - POW 5, P+S 13 (Slayer Fist)
Right Jab - POW 3, P+S 11 (Weaponless Repenter Fist)

Keening Wail: During it's activation, this model may spend 1 FOC to activate Keening Wail. Center a 4" AOE on Calliope. All non-Sideshow warrior models underneath the AoE cannot give or receive orders, and suffer -2 on attack rolls,. Keening Wail may not be used on a turn in which this model runs or while this model is Stationary.

    @feverdream

Also Yours Mercenary Character is quite an Interesting and Original Concept...

I'm checking out some Graphic Ideas for "Steampunk Circus Freaks" and "Dark Carny People" related to Iron Kingdoms Background for the Five Fingers Fan-Made Game developed by @Son Of Menoth...

So I could have some Rough Illustrations that could be useful for the Conceptual Visualization of Yours Illusionist and Warcaster Ysmen if You are interested in M drawing some Sketches...

I envison him with a Stage Magician ludicrous Top Hat and a Light Warcaster Armour half-disguised under an Elegant Trench-Coat; I just don't understand from Yours Text what form will take its Melee and Ranged Attack (may be a thin Mechanikal Rapier or Foil hidden inside a Crystal Pommel Cane...??) and if I understood properlyYours Description the Custom Warjack "Calliope" is a Menite Chassis with a Sonic Emitter as "Gun-Arm" and a Organ Pipes Assembly laced to the Back Smokestack, much like the Protectorate Character Warjack "Avatar of Menoth"...

    Let Me know if interested.....

I've always wanted to do a freaky circus in IK. The world has plenty of dark corners for the weirdos to dwell.

Completely and utterly awesome. I'd love to see them!

I originally thought "Sleight of Hand" would be a dagger, but your idea of a cane blade is so much better. I really do like that, and it shames me a little that I didn't think of it first. Though much like Fiona, I'm not sure I could see him with a ranged weapon, unless it was like an old, single-shot Derringer-like pistol.

If he needs a ranged weapon, one idea I had is that he carries some strange frog or lizard that can spit acid or something. It's a circus, and to keep people interested, they would likely have an interesting menagerie... Oh god, now I have to make a Warlock, or at least a Lesser one for this group. I was thinking, too, that if this ever was a type of Mercenary contract, that Dahlia and Skarath would be a part-time member of the troupe.

As for Calliope, you got the gist of what I wanted to convey. The only difference is that it doesn't have a sonic emitter for an arm. The pipes interlaced with the smokestack would be the sonic emitters. As this is a circus troupe, they're used to making quick, haphazard repairs. What I envisioned for Calliope is basically one arm larger than the other, along with a hunchback style posture. It's a freakish machine among freakish people. Hrm. Then again, he might not want to work for the Protectorate if he's going to be dragging in a misshapen version of one of their holy warjacks... Nah, a good paint job and pretty decorations might throw the priests off.

You know what? Scratch that. There's already Scrapjack out there. Calliope should be beautiful. A work of art despite all the cracked features. But still, two open fists for mostly doing headlocks and the like is what I'm looking for.

    And yes, I'm very interested!

Sorry about the lateness of my reply - this weekend kinda kicked me in the balls. Anyway, here goes:

Firstly, the fluff / background is awesome.

    Stats look good to me.

    FEAT: Smoke and Mirrors
All friendly models currently in Ysmen's control range gain figment. All initial attacks made by enemies against models with figment automatically miss. In addition, models with figment gain +2 Def against melee attacks. Smoke and Mirrors lasts for one round.
Ok, I get where you're coming from on this, but it's not working as is. Any models without the ability to buy additional attacks will be boned by this feat, and that's a bit much. In keeping with the illusionary feel, how does this take you:

"Friendly models in Ysmen's control area gain +2 DEF against melee attacks. Whenever an enemy attack misses a friendly model in Ysmen's control area, Ysmen's controller may place the targetted model up to 3" from its current location. A model may only be moved once per turn as a result of Smoke and Mirrors. Smoke and mirrors lasts for one round."

MERCENARY - This model will work for Cygnar, Khador, and the Protectorate.
His fluff makes me wonder why he works for Khador.

    SPELLS
Blur COST 2 RNG 6 AOE - POW - UP Yes OFF No I think this spell is a given
Target friendly model/unit gains +3 DEF against enemy ranged and magic attack damage rolls.
Blur, Mirage and Curse of Shadows are all good fits. A spell that replicates Rhupert Carvollo's "Dirge of Mists" would be very much in character as well. Also consider some of these: "Phantasm" and "Veil of Mists" (Privateers, Shae), "Admonition" (MercenariesAshlynn), "Teleport" (Cygnar, Caine) and "Occulation" (Witch Coven). All fluffy spells for an illusionist.

    Ysmen

The only ability I can think of right now is Feign Death.
That's a good idea. If he ends up being Upkeep heavy, consider Resourceful as well. Maybe Bushwhack?

    WEAPONS

    Sleight of Hand POW - 5, P+S - 9
    Magical Weapon
Parry (He's really, really, really not going to want to be in the front lines...)
If you give him Admonition are a spell, I'd drop Parry. It serves the same function and I don't see him as a swordsman good enough to warrant Parry.
Why does he have no gun? Not even a derringer? A cane-sword is a given though.

    =====================================

    Calliope
    Mercenary Sideshow Character Light Warjack
    SPD - 5, STR - 8, MAT - 6(7?), RAT - 4, DEF - 13, ARM - 16

Companion [Ysmen] - This warjack is included in the battlegroup for Ysmen the Illustrious.

    WEAPONS
    Open Fist x2 - POW -3, P+S -11

Keening Wail Special Action (*) - (Calliope may spend 1 FOC to use Keening Wail)Center a 4" AOE on Calliope. All warrior models other than Ysmen underneath the AoE cannot give or receive orders, suffer -2 on attack rolls, and cannot make free strikes. Keening Wail lasts for 1 round.
MAT 6 looks better for a bodged together 'jack. I'd make Keening Wail a non-action ability since you have to pay FOC for it. You might want to limit the effects of it as well, as it's a little much right now. Keep the "no orders" and maybe the attack de-buff but drop the freestrikes bit. Also, I'd word it "Non-Sideshow warrior models". As for bonds, Protective (I think that's it) is a good fit. Or maybe "Craven" just for some colour.

Overall: Great start! I really like the feel of these guys and I can't wait to see the rest.
I did it on Ritalin. I got me some good grades. Now I work me the night shift.

    They can sometimes do that.

Firstly, the fluff / background is awesome.
    Much appreciated!

    Stats look good to me.
Ahh good. I almost ripped his stats right from pSeverius, but decided that as circus folk, he's going to know how to make himself not really seen.

I went ahead and updated the original entry with this. It is a thousand times better than what my brain spit out. And, in fact, is probably the most fun feat I've seen.

His fluff makes me wonder why he works for Khador.
My thoughts are along the lines of: 1. Why burn bridges? If the war ever ends, hopefully they'll allow you to set up your tents. and 2. Better the devil you know?

I felt like adding to the fluff a section where Ysmen and Ashlynn know of each other, and will work together, but only grudgingly, as his willingness to aid Khador is a sore spot for her. New Umbreans are Umbreans first, Llaelese second. They'd be an independent nation if they could, but when choosing which side, they'll end up on Llael's side every time. Okay... maybe Ysmen shouldn't work for Khador, either...

Here's my thinking... and feel free to present an opposing point of view: Each Warcaster should bring something to the table that isn't redundant with the Mercenary models available. So, having something replicating Rhupert kind of takes away what Rhupert can provide.

Then again, I do use Saxxon Orrik with my Thornfall Brigands, and they can double up... Let me get back to you on that...

I changed the wording of "Blur" to "Blurred Lines", which is pretty much Blur, but can only target friendly [i]units[/b]. Because I remembered Shadow Pack, and that seems to be a nasty thing that Ysmen can bring that no one else above, or in canon, can do. I also went ahead and put A2A, because everyone needs an offensive spell.

Another worry I have is that some spells may be redundant, or if available on one model, might push them to broken. That's just my thinking. Again, feel free to point out otherwise.

Before I forget, since Ysmen is a master of illusion, perhaps he also is an expert at illuminating the tricks of the enemy, so a spell that replicates the Spriggan's Flare grenade (AoE that removes Camoflauge, stealth, and concealment for all enemy models in the template)?
    Re: Feign Death
That's a good idea. If he ends up being Upkeep heavy, consider Resourceful as well. Maybe Bushwhack?
I think Resourceful works well. He's a carny, after all. Or maybe that can be a Wernitov Sideshow bonus if you stay within the contract. So, I'll go with Bushwhack, for now.

If you give him Admonition are a spell, I'd drop Parry. It serves the same function and I don't see him as a swordsman good enough to warrant Parry.
I saw it not so much as a swordsman as little tricks of legerdemain that he ducks around people. Maybe a built in "Once per turn" ability similar to Admonition?

Why does he have no gun? Not even a derringer? A cane-sword is a given though.
What would you stat a holdout pistol with? Short RNG low POW, to be sure, but I wouldn't know what numbers to plug in. I posted earlier in response to BotV's points that maybe he carries around a toad or lizard or other exotic creature that acts as a spray template, but yeah, a holdout pistol is better.

I should make a legend for the use of colors. My use of red was kind of a "Does this look good to you?" thing. Using your suggestion for the feat, yeah, I'll take away the "No free strikes" rule.

How about this? Anytime during this model's activation, this model may spend one focus to activate Keening Wail...?

Also, I don't have the MkII Prime available, but I still have Remix. Protective isn't really what I had in mind with Calliope. Is Needy still one of the Mercenary bonds?

Or... Cortexes often take on the imprint of a caster that controls it for a long time. Perhaps, as a kind of meditation, Ysmen shunts his "dark" personality to the 'jack so he always appears calm. Over time, the 'jack has taken on these suppressed feelings, and has taken on a Baneful nature, or even having an Appetite for Destruction?

Overall: Great start! I really like the feel of these guys and I can't wait to see the rest.
As I said, I just play the game most of the time. This is my first exercise in trying to make an actual character. I figure I'll polish Ysmen up before I go on to Zane Leary (freakshow carny/berserker type), and Miss Loopy Pennyworth ("girl who was raised by wolves" [lesser] warlock who empathizes with a creature or two from the Sideshow's menagerie).

    @FeverDream

Just a Thought about an eventual Ranged Attack for "Ysmen The Magnificent Illusionist"; even if a spring-mounted Small Derringer Hold-Out Pistol jutting from the wrist (like the one used by Robert DeNiro in "Taxi Driver") could be linked to a Tuxedo Hat Warrior-Mage, the Idea of an Acidic Venom Spitting "Little Bugger" maybe is more oriented toward "Dark Carnival Circus" Images...

As Spitting Toads and Turtles are becoming quite diffuse in the upcoming "Minions Forcebook" maybe should be better a Little Poisonous Snake uncoiling around the Arm (so Ysmen can Double-Perform even as "Snake Charmer Hypnotist"), a Large Spider-like Tarantula (like the one used by the Vampire Clown of "Cirque Du Freaks" Movie about Carny Horror-Comedy) or even a little "Cursed Jade Scorpion" Arcane-Mechanik Robot Familiar (this one as Homage to the homonimous Film of Woody Allen)...

As Critters spitting Acid Sludge could be too much Cryx-Styled maybe the Short Ranged Attack could be the same "Lil' Beastie" jumping on an enemy, bitting them with Poisonous Fangs (maybe laced with Mystical Corrosive Properties to hurt unliving targets...) and quickly scuttling back to Master Ysmen...

The Custom Warjack "Calliope" now that You described it more thorougly I envison now as a Basic Menite Repenter Chassis (with the aforementioned Organ-Pipe Exhaust Assembly fitted on the Backburner Engine) but with subtle touches reminding more lethal Cryxian Helljacks (maybe a Slayer's Left Claw, scavenged on the Battlefield and justifying the "Dark Quirk") and tarnished Combat Spikes hidden under a Cheerful Clownesque Paintjob...

What about a Name like "The Prestige" for the Ranged Attack or a Custom Spell (maybe involving Limited Teleport like Allister Caine's)...

    @Jaren and @Iknowinternet

Do You have other Ideas for Yours two Warcasters Concept that I should put into Rough Sketches...??

Maybe a specific Character Custom Warjack also for them, like (for Jaren Cross) a stolen Charger or Sentinel, modified with Merc 'Jacks Parts, to cover its Caster when it is engaged in Furious Melee or (for Ballard Cross) a modified Talon custom-fitted to mimic the P.O.M. Devout Warjack bodyguard defensive attitude...??

Let Me know if these Graphic Ideas would be cool for all of You.....

    @Bringer of the Void

I was just reading in my old copy of Liber Mechanika about a certain class called the Mechanist, which specializes in making little clockwork creations. One speaks of a woman who does marionette shows with her skills. Perhaps the ranged weapon could be that.

Or if it's an animal, be it a snake or lizard, and he calls it "Rabbit". It surprises people by jumping out a hole in the hat, thus making it a terrible pun, but par for the course for some of the Farrow jokes.

As for Calliope, I like that idea. The large arm makes the 'jack move like a gorilla, giving it a more feral animal quality. A mockery of the man-like Menite warjack it once was.

I just realized. If anything becomes a "standard bearer" in this army, I would have them holding up those large carnival posters. The ones featuring sideshow attractions "COME SEE JANICE THE BEARDED WOMAN"! "STAND IN AWE OF HORGUS, THE STRONGEST HUMAN ALIVE!" (Which could be played by Bloody Bradigan...)

That was my feeling as well.

Here's my thinking... and feel free to present an opposing point of view: Each Warcaster should bring something to the table that isn't redundant with the Mercenary models available. So, having something replicating Rhupert kind of takes away what Rhupert can provide.
It's not redundant if Rhupert isn't in his Tier lists; and I see no reason why he would be if you're going for a self-contained, Talion-like group.

I changed the wording of "Blur" to "Blurred Lines", which is pretty much Blur, but can only target friendly units.
Yeah, he doesn't need ALL of those spells. How does this look for his spell list: Blurred Lines, Shadow Pack, Ashes to Ashes, Bullet Dodger, Fire Wall, plus one more - maybe something that gives target warrior model/unit Terror (Illusions can be SCARY!).
And bear with me on Fire Wall - it gives his army some board control, it synergizes with a two-handed 'jack, and it's a great special effect for a stage show.

Before I forget, since Ysmen is a master of illusion, perhaps he also is an expert at illuminating the tricks of the enemy, so a spell that replicates the Spriggan's Flare grenade (AoE that removes Camoflauge, stealth, and concealment for all enemy models in the template)?
Dunno about that one. Most casters are pretty focused on their "trick" - his should be making his army VERY hard to hit and VERY shifty. De-buffing is someone elses bag.

I think Resourceful works well. He's a carny, after all. Or maybe that can be a Wernitov Sideshow bonus if you stay within the contract. So, I'll go with Bushwhack, for now.
Giving him Resourceful as a Tier benfit works. If nothing else it makes more room on the card.

I saw it not so much as a swordsman as little tricks of legerdemain that he ducks around people. Maybe a built in "Once per turn" ability similar to Admonition?
Or something like Mr. Walls' "monkey bite" rule. You mentioned he has a pet?

What would you stat a holdout pistol with? Short RNG low POW, to be sure, but I wouldn't know what numbers to plug in. I posted earlier in response to BotV's points that maybe he carries around a toad or lizard or other exotic creature that acts as a spray template, but yeah, a holdout pistol is better.
RNG 8, POW 10 is pretty standard for pistols. Most Warnouns have harder hitting weapons than that, though. While I'm on the subject, Sleight of Hand is pretty anemic at P+S 9.

How about this? Anytime during this model's activation, this model may spend one focus to activate Keening Wail...?
"Keening Wail: During it's activation, this model may spend 1 FOC to activate Keening Wail. (rule text here). Keening Wail may not be used on a turn in which this model runs or while this model is Stationary."

The no running thing is two-fold:
    1) Rules wise: It makes the ability a LOT less gross.
    2) Fluff wise: Steam pressure usage. Either run the organ or run the 'jack.

Both good ideas. "Hound" or "Playin' Possum" would also work. I could never make up my mind so I just gave Jaren the generic, 4 FOC bond.

    @ BOTV:
Currently the only Cygnar 'jack he has access to is the Ironclad. I picture his 'jack as having been bodged together over the years with whatever was on hand.

I can't thank you enough for actually following thru with this concept art. You're tops.

I like the idea of that Talon, but if you can make it seem as if it is running on its last legs (a la Redline) and ready to throw down with anything to buy Ballard Cross just a few moments time.
If you can show some use of Ballard's force-magic (ie some poor fool getting blown away like a ragdoll), all the better. He should probably seem pretty mobile and alert, not like the static poses they gave pMags and Drake.
Also... Gordon Freeman is never a bad route to take. Ballard Cross is just more of a blowhard and less of the silent type.

Also... made some changes to Ballard's stats.

    @ Iknowinternet:

From the Field Test, (I don't have a Khador deck yet)

    Quick Work -
When this model destroys one or more enemy models with a melee attack during its combat action, immediatelyafter that attack is resolved this model can make one normal ranged attack. Attacks gained from Quick Work do not count against a weapon's ROF.

I'd rename it to something like "The ol' 1-2" and change "destroys one or more enemy models" to "hits".

You might want to give him a generic grenade anyway, ala Dougal MacNaile.

As far as a feat goes, here's something I came up with:

"Enemy small- and medium-based models within the number of unspent FOC on Ballard in inches suffer a POW 14 damage roll and are slammed d3" +1'' per unspent FOC directly away from Ballard. Models are slammed in an order determined by Ballards controller. All damage rolls are simultaneous. Enemy large-based models within the same area suffer a POW 14 damage roll and are knocked down."

I added all those spells you suggested. I don't have costs or text, but they're in the list. Also, I added the suggested spell, which I call "Something Wicked". It gives a model/unit terror, and I added +2 DEF, but with all the defensive spells, is that too much?

I don't think so, but I'm not a game designer. My thoughts are that this would allow a really nice set-up during the feat turn, as the extra +2 would allow the model to hopefully get behind the enemy and will have a good charge lane.

    Re: AoE removing stealth, etc.
Dunno about that one. Most casters are pretty focused on their "trick" - his should be making his army VERY hard to hit and VERY shifty. De-buffing is someone elses bag.
Yeah, you're right. Perhaps a solo. You know? The guy that handles pyrotechnics.

Or something like Mr. Walls' "monkey bite" rule. You mentioned he has a pet?
I'm torn. But I went with BotV's suggestion for a kind of snake charmer guy. With them traveling around and having access to some of the black markets, they'll have access to some strange and remarkable creatures from far off lands. I thought of a "Zulese Cobra" (nothing that exists yet) that has an exotic venom that removes Tough (doesn't do corrosion, and doesn't disallow transfers. It's very situational, to be sure, but it's very caustic, even to unliving creatures, hence POW 12). Also, I upped Sleight of Hand to more Ashlynn-like levels, though without all the cool talents she has.

    Re: Keening Wail
Changed entirely to your suggestion. Though for giggles, and as I always say, feel free to correct me, I put the two open fists as something different. One arm is a Slayer arm, the other is the original repenter arm. Both have the open fist quality.

Also, I gave it Baneful. Appetite for Destruction doesn't represent Calliope flying into a panic whenever Ysmen would be engaged. Rather than do its normal "lock" attacks, it would do anything to beat up something that threatens its caster. It's too bloody-minded to do its fancy kung-fu grip on another warnoun.

I really, really, really appreciate all the input and feedback!

    @ BOTV:
It's very cool that you're making these sketches, and I thank you for them. I cannot wait to see them!

    @ Feverdream:

There's already a rule that does what you want the snake to do - Grievous Wounds. Also, the rule text for Keening Wail is missing.

For the same reason you mention, I'd rethink the DEF bonus on Something Wicked and give them something else like Dark Shroud

As a regular Fiona player, I know about this! And here's my stupid thinking. Is there anyone with Grievous Wounds on a ranged weapon, let alone a spray? I think some players would be quite upset at that. Granted, it's a small spray, but it still has the potential to hit many targets. Letting models retain their ability to transfer, I think, would make it less nasty. To use the BattleCollege lines: If Ysmen is using it, then something went horribly wrong.

Or it could work in reverse, sorta: Models gain corrosion. Living Warbeasts hit by Exotic Venom cannot have damage transferred to it for one round?
Also, the rule text for Keening Wail is missing.

I changed it to enemy models engaged with the target model suffer -2 DEF (ARM?) as per your suggestion, representing the sheer pants-s***ing terror they may be facing.

Still and all, I really hope I'm not seeming impossible. Crazy? Yeah, I'm sure I'm crazy, but I warned you people I've never done game design. I'm really wanting to make a fun, balanced creation, so every bit of feedback is welcomed!

Good call on Greivous Wounds, I didn't read the SP part the first time.

The DEF debuff makes more sense than an ARM debuff, although an MAT debuff would also work and would synergize with his feat. Just a thought.

I actually like the back and forth we've got going. I feel that we're zeroing in on a playable version here. And hey, it's not like I'm a game designer either and they're your homebrews - do what you want. If I'M being to much of a pain, let me know.

For fun, I think I'll make the SP equal to Gorman's Black Oil bomb. It's one of those things that is totally awesome, but if the Warcaster's close enough to use it, he's pretty much dead the next round...

    @Jaren
And Semi-Repaired Ironclad it will be (maybe Painted in the same "Merc Green" Livery of Magnus Battlegroup) in the EVENTUAL Full-Colour Illustration that I will realize as soon as the Black and White Rough Sketches (soon to be released...)will be approved from all of You...

    @iknowinternet
Like said above as soon as the BW Concept (that will be quite a "Static Pin-Up Pose" as Concepts go...) of Ballard Cross will be approved by You, I will realize a Colour Illustration depicting the Bodyguard Warjack (so a Customized Talon will be O.K. for You ???) pushing harm out of the way of the Merc 'Caster, that will also be showing off its "Telekinetic Manipulation" against other hapless opponents, swatted away like flies...

About adapting Rules to import into Ballard Stats, maybe You should check the Hordes Warbeasts of Trollblood Bouncer (that has a Animus that "Push Away" Enemies from Melee Range...) and the Skorne Titan Sentinel (that instead "Forces" an Enemy to go toward him, maybe reverse-enigneering the Rules...)...

    @feverdream
I believe that more or less We are O.K. towards Ysmen Graphic Ideas for the Concept, but I want to surmise that He will be sporting an "Ultralight Warcaster Armor" made primarily of Enchanted Leather (like Sorscha Kratikoff or Skarre Ravenmane) with a Tiny Boiler on the Back, rather than the Imposing "Full Plate + Trench" that I envison for the other Two...

About the "Ranged Weapon" I will realize some different Sketches for the outstrechted arm pointing toward an imaginary Enemy, so You would choose what is coolest between Snake, Toad, Scorpion, Mecha-Critter or a simple Hold-Out Gun...

About the "Calliope Sonic Warjack" I think that You have to choose between Two Slayers-like Clawed Arms (and so the Jack Frame would seem Lethal but Beautiful) or a single One (resulting in a Misshapen Crab-Like Chassis that seems "Bodged Together from Scraps" and could be linked to Your previous Idea of a Gorilla-Like Hunchback Quasimodo, that could be also useful for a Second Warjack, maybe a Support Heavy)...

The other Ideas for the "Wernitov Sideshow" Freaks are quite interesting as I believe that after "Pirates Concept" the Idea of a "Dark Carnival Circus" will be EXTREMELY Cool if inserted inside the Iron Kingdoms Background (and about the Old Trope of "Pirates VS. Ninjas", sorry, but any Kind of "Shinobi Concept" is yet taken by Blighted Nyss Elves and Skorne Bloodrunners) and I will be readily interested in realize something on the same line...

When the 3 Different Warcaster Concepts would be totally worked out I believe that could be also interesting in Featuring them into a small Comic-Like Battle Report, maybe a Royal Rumble between them, or all three allied (after all, all 3 are Mercs...) against a specific Warmachine / Hordes Faction Battlegroup that all of You hate...

But this last Idea must be postponed a little, as I have a literal "Crapton Metric Volume" of Fanmade Material related to PP Stuff to realize.....

    Okay:

How about a cobra coiled around the rim of the top hat, in a post similar to that of an ancient Egyptian headdress? It surprises people when it comes to "life" and spits people. Of course, Ysmen would probably wear glasses or small goggles to keep it from spraying in his own eyes. I think it popping out of his arm would be too much like Broadside Bart.

As for Calliope, I think two Slayer arms would be better. Even more insulting than just the one. And it would give a truer gorilla pose.

    ========================

I consider myself fortunate enough to live fairly close to a Sideshow Village. These are small hamlets near a larger town where the freakshows and other circus people can retire for a while when they're not out on the road performing. I believe there are plenty of them around the US and Canada. I would be willing to bet there are many in Europe, too, even if they may be more "gypsy" than "freakshow". But this is my limited knowledge of Europe. I would love to know about traveling sideshows there!

These villages are clean, if not cleaner than most towns I've been to. Probably because the people take pride in them. They're tight-knit families and often will send the "normals" into town to do any shopping and the like. This way the "freaks" don't have to suffer the persecution, or at least the uncomfortable stares, of the local populace.

I can see a village or two, hidden away from the authorities in all the major nations that would allow them access, where the groups would have families waiting for them. They could serve as a loose network about Western Immoren. The "normals" could be as much family as they could be spymasters. "Uh oh, they're wanting to crack down on some of the folk. Time to move."

While it may seem like a traveling sideshow may not be a mercenary force on their own, if, in Immoren, they did consist of little pockets of villages in every nation, and have a decent means of communication between them, they could get a small force ready to defend their own, or at least work for others to get coin AND to divert their employer's attention away from their family homes.

I dunno. Needs work, I'm sure.

    @feverdream
This Idea if an "Ureus" (Golden Cobra styled circlet headgear, representing the God Set and the Crown of the Ancient Coastal Aegyptian Kingdom) on the Top Hat is quite cool and could also leave the "Miniature Pose" open to extract the Rapier Blade from the Mechanikal Cane (like many Images of Oriental Swordmen with Katana Blades hidden inside Priestly Staves, Silken Umbrella or simple Wooden Walking Rods)...

Other simple touches of "Mysterious Egyptian Mage" could be interesting to enhance the Illusionist Figure, as (without going for Heavy Make-Up or a too-cliched Paharaoh Headgear) some little ideas, like a few Golden Jewels and a Small Beard that seems fake, could be powerful graphic concept ideas...

As for the Warjack concept once "Calliope" is ready, I could also draw "Igor the Deformed One-Armed Hunchback" as a Support Heavy Chassis with more classical Ranged and Melee options...

I could found many Historical Accounts for European Families of Nomadic Carnival Clans (Gypsies or Otherwise) if You need them for inspiration.....

    @BotV

Well, the question becomes is whether or not he'll wear such ridiculous get-ups into battle. True, there have been ways to use such distractions to get the upper hand in melee, but overall, are they going to be marching into battle like that? The top hat, sure, because the snake probably enjoys the warmth off of Ysmenovich's (Ysmen) head, and makes a great distraction on top of just spitting people in the face.

I'm just wondering if I want to push him right into Wizzo the Wizard territory:

Although I totally dig that facial hair in all its fake-ness.

I never expected this idea to go further, but, why the hell not? I would love info on the European side of things. Most I can tell you is the traveling shows dating back to the early 1800s in the US. It would help to give the whole thing a more traditional IK feel.

While I have no idea of who and what represent the Photo and Name of this "Wizzo the Wizard" I think that will be similar to an Italian Personage created for Sponsoring a Cookie Brand in the '50 (the "Awesome Magician Zurlì" that was a Stage Illusionist more or less dressed as "Prince Valiant") that is an example of Quack Illusionist and Bad Stage Performer...

As Ysmen kind of Illusionist Magic would be quite Real in the Iron Kingdom Context I will envison him more of a "Mandrake The Hypnotist" Character who own "A Little True Magick" enhanced by its powerful Telephatic Suggestions...

Anyway even Houdini The Great used "Magic Tricks" that He affirmed came from the "Mysterious Far Orient" or "Anciemt Time Of The Pharaos" so if Khadoran Attire represent Early 19th Century Cossack Russians, the Stage Performers of the '30 could be as well represented inside the Excellent Background created by Privateer Press...

As the Weapons and Gear of the Idrians and the Giants of Bemoth display an Uncanny resemblance with Homerical Ancient Greece (contemporaries of our World Ancient Egyptian Times...) maybe Ysmen learned its tricks from a "Mysterious Dark Skinned Stranger from Zu" that came to the Iron Kingdoms from a "Fiery Land with Sands Of Fire, Titanic Temples of Stone and Metal Idols of Animal-Headed Gods..." if an Idea of Prestige Magicians could be interesting...

Perhaps only subtle touches are needed for Ysmen (like an "Eye Of Horus" inside the Crystal Pommel of its Mechanikal Swordcane, Scarab-like Jewels and the aforementioned Fake Beard) and Cliched Tropes could be reserved for its Warjack Battlegroup, like an Anubis Jackal-Head for "Calliope" or the (eventual...) "Hunchback Quasimodo"...

Maybe also performing in the Wernitov Circus will be also a Gatorman Sorcerer called "Sobek From The Nile" or some kind of Winged Dragon-Blighted Critter named "Apophis" and so on...

Regarding the Historical European Families of Circus Dinasties and Carnival Show Clans, there are some very ancient "Bloodlines" that go till the 18th Century and that have still living descendants roaming the Europe in Sideshow Circuits...

I will dig more details as soon as possible.....

IKnowInternet has already given me some feedback for these guys on another thread. I was hoping they would get a little more exposure there, however that doesn't seem to be the case. Here are Captain Adept T'mys Willis & the Predator. These are two characters from my Warmachine novella The Sword of Morrow. http://turbulence1973.deviantart.com...Ch-01-82860935

Now I've posted some new artwork of the duo over in the Fan Art section, you can find it here http://privateerpressforums.com/show...p-the-Predator Please check it out.

Wizzo the Wizard was the illusionist performer on the old show "Bozo the Clown" here in the US. He had a central Asian look, and he would brandish that gem on his neck (known as the Stone of Zanzibar) whenever he would perform his little tricks. The character was from "Arobia", as he claimed.

Huh. I could definitely see that the family has mostly BSed their whole show for the longest time, claiming to have many "mysteries of the east", only to have that notion shattered after the First Skorne Invasion of Cygnar (you know, before they came back under Makeda's leadership)...

I was imagining a dolled-up Mandrake, too, after you mentioned it. Maybe throw in some Svengali while we're at it.

You know? I was jotting notes down for the Wernitov Circus, and I wrote down how they would have "initiation rites" for people joining up. These rites would be a combination of several ceremonies they've seen in their travels, using weird artifacts they've stolen... er... acquired while on the road. So, a Circle spear here, a couple Skorne Praetorian swords there...

Oooh! Ooh! If we're going to go Egyptian-esque, then I want a cow's head Hathor for Calliope! Totally ornamental horns that do nothing, but are awesome-looking regardless!

Maybe also performing in the Wernitov Circus will be also a Gatorman Sorcerer called "Sobek From The Nile" or some kind of Winged Dragon-Blighted Critter named "Apophis" and so on...
The Gatormen just got their own Minion pact, and with the family traveling so much, especially to the cold, cold north, the gators, combined with their extremely blood-thirsty nature, may not be boon companions (though some might argue carnies and clowns are much, much worse than gatormen). However, one of the solos I had in mind was a Farrow who handled the pyrotechnics of the sideshow, since Farrow are good with explosive stuff, after all. That, and they're more common and closer to the edges of humanity than the gators.

However... you've sort of spoiled my next Warcaster, Zane "The Metal Monster" Leary. No, he's not cybernetic or anything. Instead, he's got so many metal piercings on the right side of his body, not to mention rusty nails in his skull, that he's hardly recognizable. He does this for two reasons. For one, it freaks people out. It probably makes Skorne Paingivers go, "Forget it, boys. There's nothing more we can do to this guy...". Secondly, he's a Scharde that has suffered deformities from Toruk's Blight on Cryx. The Blight fills him with rage (and all around carny creepiness), but the people at the sideshow help him out. Life on the road tempers him, but any reminders of his horrible childhood in the Nightmare Isles sends him over the edge.

Despite being blighted, he has a hatred of all things blighted, as they remind him of his own horrible deformity. What are mere whispers of the Dragonfather become loud screams when in the presence of other blighted monstrosities, and he lashes out to try and quiet them.

But let's work on Jaren, Ballard, Ysmen, and T'mys.

Nice work, Turbulence! I'll let the others, however, critique the stats. Looking at your other thread, I realize I have a lot to work on for my own homebrew.

Oh, I'm going to have to order a second Broadside Bart and start kitbashing for Ysmen...
