First it looks good. There is just 3 things, I would like to comment on: 1: Gorman, if you painted his flacons in 3 colours, instead of just green, it would show, all 3 type of his grenades. 2: Sory but I'm not sure on the Risen, don't know why, but they reminds me, about something who fall into a flour barrel. 3: I understand why you wish a alternative Kell, but was there no male model, you like?

    1) Yeah, Gorman, one of my first painted solos. I know, he is not well done, especially the flacons. Since there are a lot of people who are complaining about that, I will redo the flacons.

    2) Hum, I don't know exactly, what you mean. The Risen should like like ghosts and I think that went well enough for the amount of time I spent for them. I'm quite happy with them.

    3) There is just the Widowmaker Marksman and that Widowmaker guy from the IK-Range, I personally like as a sharpshooter. But since I won that WM-Leader, I wanted to use her as Kell(a). Maybe, I will try to get that IK-guy and use him as Kell, but now, I have other priorities, such as getting more Mercs stuff painted. Next year, I want to participate at some huge tournaments which require Hardcoe painted 50PC Lists. So, I have quite a lot to do getting some units painted.

This weekend, there is a local tournament where I will participate. I want to play Shae, but did not have the jacks for my favored jacks. So, my challenge is to get the Bucanneer and the Freebooter done till thursday.

    Sub-goal one ist finished:

4 days left for the Freebooter....

Sub-goal two finished - right in time:

I'm not really satisfied with him. The body was awful to paint... But he's finished, now I can go on with some more interesting models.

Your painting is great. Sad to see the eyes detract so much from the rest of the model.

---If you'd like some advice, keep reading, if not, you may stop here---

To get better looking eyes, start by painting the entire eye socket a dark, dark brown, a darker version of the flesh you're using, or even black. After that, pick out ONLY the inside of that dark circle you just painted with an OFF-WHITE color (this is important). Then, I like to use a very small pen, like .05 size and do the pupil. I just started doing eyes in this manner (before I was so awful at eyes I wouldn't even paint them!) and it turns out great. Hope this helps.

Nearly two months without an update... (new job, moving to a new place, etcpp)

    are ending now!

I finished my unit Kayazy Assassins.

I love these models. Some slight head conversions and I have 11 different models. And I hope, you see my improvements in painting eyes.

Next up - Boomhowlers Guys. Seven models are done, three left.

    Your models look very cool....

I am currently experimenting with ghostly risen, but cant get it just right. I like your version. Can you remember exactly how you did the Risen ?

These are some great looking models. Very nicely painted. The only thing I can see that could use a little improvement is your eyes. There's needs to be a dark line around the whites to keep them from looking surprised. Its also important to remember that the whole Iris is not showing in the eye of someone who isn't startled. The top and the bottom of the "dot" will be covered by the lids. Check this link out. I usually only go to step four. Anyways, great work. Happy painting to you!

It's just White Primer, washed with Gryphone Sepia and after drying the eyes washed with Baal Red. Quite simple, but I didn't wanted to paint 20 similar models.

Thanks for the tutorial. I should make a bigger photo of the Kayazy. I tryed this in a similar way on these models and I'm really satisfied with it. The older models, well, maybe I will redo the faces, but now, I want to get more models finished. But it's a plan for the future.

I finished some more minis. First, my full unit of Boomhowler & Co.:

Minis are too small on the pic, I don't have experience taking photos of such large units. I didnt't want to have double models, so Boomhowler hired Skaldi, the Kiltlifter, a Trollkin Adventurer and two Scattergunner. I know, it's not 100% tourney-legal, but up to now, I didn't had any problems.

Yeah, eEyriss, finally finished. I like this model and I'm really satisfied with her.

The Ragman is a little bit too glossy, because a took the picture soon after varnishing. The colours of his patches correspond to of all used colours for the clothing of my mercs.

Finally, one of my Flags for SR-Tournaments. This model is from Rackham. Great sculpt.

Your models are fantastic!! They are both uniform & mismatched at the same time, like any good Mercenary army should be...

[On a side note, I've been to the city you list as your location...

I've got just a picture of an unfinished Risen for you. It's simply White Primer, washed with Gryphone Sepia. The eyes got a wash of Baal Red.

    Two more models are finished.

    First, my Gun Mage Officer:

    And my Anastasia Di Bray:

I don't like the original model (great artwork, bad model), so I looked for an alternative. It's Sienna, a Cadwallon character from Rackham.

Funny Coincidence: Here we have some kind of unintended Actor Allusion : Sienna Miller playing that chick working for some distinct terrorist organization...

After my Rocinante-Kitbash, I got some parts left over for another Warjack - my Rover:

But now, I have a problem - how to build a second one without buying again a Mule and a Nomad?

Well things are still looking good.

However, one thing I do think would improve your models a lot is simply making the pupils in the eyes a bit bigger. It should take up most of the eye and be centred slightly higher than than the middle. As it is a lot of your models look like they are staring maniacally.

I'm surprised I am just now seeing this tread! I really like your simple scheme for your models. It's an inspiration for people like me who create many layered, multi-colored color schemes that get burned out before finishing. Keep the pics coming!

I have to say the way his eyes are painted, he looks extremely startled. I laugh out loud when I look at him. I love it!!

The mercs look great! You certainly have a wide variety here - quick question. Where did you get that flag sculpt? You said it was from Rackham, but a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Heya, great looking mercs. I'm getting a kick out of all the eyes you've done.. I know it's not intentional, and I'm not laughing to be mean. But they are super comedic.

Having said that, here's a couple quick and dirty ms paint pics that may help you:

Step one: Paint the whole eye black. The whole thing.

Step two: Paint the corners with white dots. This keeps the pupils of both eyes roughly similar in size as well as centering them.. It'll help to avoid the "too much coffee look" or the "oh crap, i just pooped my pants" look.

    I hope this helps!

P.s. I love Damiano's expression. I keep giggling at it, so awesome =)

Thanks a lot for the kind words. The Flag is one of two so called idols by Rackham.

I'd say no for the following reasons:

    A. if not enough or done wrong..looks like the model was spotted/splattered with a spilled pot of random red paint
    B. Too much just looks bad
    C. finding the middle can be a real pain.

Now this is just my opinion so take it or leave it...ignore it or disagree with it...that's my 2 cents!!

I think perhaps more to the point is that they look great already, so is it worth risking ruining them to make them bloody?

Ok, nearly everybody, whom I have shown these minis, told me to not put blood on them. So, I won't do that.

    Time for an update.

First of all, my full unit of Devil Dogs:

I love the six models of the Min Unit. So I didn't want to take twins or triplets to get the full unit. I chose three models from the IK Range and Romerto from Freebooters Fate to fill the Max Unit. By doing that, I repainted the skin of the six Devil Dogs (my first painted unit ever...) and tried painting the eyes. I hope, you see the improvement.

My second Talon - nothing special, just because I have of nearly every Warjack two models.

Aiyana and Holt - they were a real pain to paint. I'm definitely not satisfied with them, but they are finished and ready for the gaming table.

After just three months of painting, I recently finished painting my Nyss Hunters.

They were really a pain to paint and I was close by stripping paint and never starting to paint them again. But finally, I'm quite happy with my elves.

After this project with painting 10 similar troopers, I was crazy enough to start another unit with just 12 troopers....

    Here's a quick Wip-shot:

Really like what you did with the risen, think I might do a similar thing with mine

EDIT: One question about them: do you find they ruin your army theme at all when they're on the table? Got a fairly strong (and colourful!!) scheme for my Mercs, wondering if this would look "off" when seen with the rest of the army..?

I really like your army. I didn't think I would be a fan of the metallics on the regular mercs, but it actually looks really good with the red accents. And the rhulic look great as well, nice smooth colors. And the pirate jacks using a blue give it a great contrast to the rest of your forces.

And the bases on all of them are outstanding!

Only critique would be the eye balls are too beady, but that has been mentioned before. Otherwise everything looks fantastic!

Well, to make it short, I don't think so. Surely, those ghostly-looking Risen are different from the rest, but, in my opinion, the "colour" of them fits very well to the limited colour range used for the army. The bases of those minis are supporting this impression, too.

This question reminds me of taking a picture from the whole army.

The question for your army would be, how strong and colurful is the scheme. In my opinion, the bases make a very strong part of a harmonious army theme. If the bases match to the rest of the army, it should work. Do you have pictures of your army here on the board? This would mage it easier to discuss about it.

Cool, would like to see an army shot!

My theme has five main armour/cloth colours. They are, umm... Bright green, fluorescent pink, electric blue, sunflower yellow and dark purple... Best way I could think of to describe them! Since there are five colours and twenty risen, I was thinking of using a style similar to yours, but with four in each colour. I agree that matching bases help bring an army together.

    Keep up the good work

    Cheers,
    Dave
