    Default Pszito's Painting Posts

Welcome to my painting thread, fellow forumites!
Below you will find the chronological installments of my venture through water-based attacks on bought-and-rolled PiP miniatures. I apologize, as it is quite pic heavy and occasionally rambling through more than just the hobby but I will be me sometimes. If you have any question, comments, or just want to add to your post count over to the left there, feel free to add some letters. Or numbers. Or ambiguously long streams of punctuation that vaguely resemble some facial gesture.
    Just do it.

<----- Here's a bad picture of my face.
v This plog is brought to you by the letter coffee v

It all began a long time ago...

So here's a little sample of where i'm headed with my Legion. I've bee doing much building, converting, scheming, but mostly playing with a nicely primed white army for the better part of way-too-long. So I'm taking my LGS's challenge of a fully painted 50pt force for a dec steamroller. Agressive, i know. But i've got my models together, primed, and a scheme arrived at. I wanted to get a measure of what y'all thought so here's a taste:
pThag has a couple little modifications, as I'm sure you tell and I've only hammered out the flesh (which i will still likely touch on), however that was the most questioned part for me. The rest will flow easily as I have more experience with cloth, leather, and darksteel colorations.

Did up a shredder (WIP) to get a feel for the color scheme. I really do like the PP coloration but I did want to twist it to a more 'blighted' feel with some rotting flesh/pale flesh in the mix. May go heavier per size class on the diseased feel of it all.

Thoughts? I am very open to constructive criticism so let loose.

    Default Wrong Eye for Matt

This was a tribute paint job I did for a competition here at the Q, held in honor of Matt R. The theme was yellow. I went to the 9s on this guy as it was the least I could do. I'm very happy with how he came out. I can only hope the energy I tried to make this model radiate is taken as a small token representation of the passion he held for this game, it's players, and the community as a whole. Please enjoy.

And yes... Snapjaw is in the worx. He's very very green atm.

pThag looks good so far, like it a lot. wEye though...having gators in my back yard...his skin tone is completely wrong. Waaaaaaaay too bright, like...radioactive bright. Gators are almost are so brown they are almost no longer a green.

For swamp bases, here is a good beginners tutorial. Click on me!

Well done... Now make Snapjaw even brighter!

@Ryo- yes, Thag is only 10% done, tho like I said that was the most experimental part for me. Much more to come! ;-)

@Strum- Thank you for the insight! There were no true to like references used in the painting of this model, tbh. I did make him rather (almost cartoonishly) bright, mostly to compliment the yellow. Also, a light box is rather cruel to brighter paint schemes. And that swamp guide is awesome. I clearly need to beef up my basing materials stockpile.

@RTGamer- I don't want to break my shiny new camera, so I may have to keep SJ at least duller than a supernova... BUT I'LL TRY! :-P

Thank you all for the comments.

    Here's the update:
Been throwin down some more details on pThag: furs, horns, claws, skin touchups, and sculpted the rest of the base. He's shapin' up nicely and I'm currently scheming on hide patterns for his cloak/train. Thinkin deer/elk, grey wolf, and possibly something stripped. Cheetah crossed my mind but i felt it would be a bit too pimp... I feel the life of the model will really kick into drive when the cape and metals are done. Details and all will moreso add flare.

Spell Martyr: Pinned in place, base complete (save pin coverup), hair sculpted, and ready for priming. Gonna have fun with this one.

    Default but wait, there's more!

Thrullg: just picked this guy up! How can i refuse the possible inclusion of a magic-sucking swamp-thing?!? However, the reoccuring issue of side-long poses is starting to tweak me so I went for a head on lumbering look. Cleaning, clipping, pinning, bending, jacking the base up so the arm doesn't drag all done, and green putty to come.

Gobbers: Retrieved these guys from a diorama I was going to do. Cleaned, glued and primed. Scouted for smog imagery to do a 'constantly obscured' paint theme.

Then after realizing I did work on two minion models and have only taken little steps on a couple Legion figs I decided to kick myself in the nuts and take a group shot to remind myself just how much work I have ahead. Here's all I got:

Time to get some serious work done.

ahhhh man.... thagrosh looks fantastic... really looking forward to seein these guys complete... so, looks like you are into the icy theme... seems like you could use some more orange in there! ha... just messin... what color armor are you thinking though? im curious. feel like the standard steel or platinum may be boring.. and by looking at thag... i almost say you could do some black steel looking armor or atleast go all black on the heavy armor... cloth and leather could be different but shiny black could be rad like onyx? i dont know, i know its primer but it looks pretty good.

I've been scheming to do either a stylized wrought iron; sheeny black metal yet mostly dull

or a repousse/armetale/hand hammered old pewter

i like the visual representation of a more archaic metal crafting that still has a gleaming edge and a sinister feel. something involving a basecoat silver, heavy black metal wash, stippling or over/dry brushing aspect, and very minimal highlights will allow me to blaze through the army's metals.

one more for hammered metal.... If it was a faction of ridged anality more akin to Ret then then the shinny metal would be more appropriate.. but Legion I see them more of a hammered metal arm faction.

Agreed, all! I have contemplated the Nyss/Elven steel factor (think Sting/Narsil/etc) but I have a stronger desire to create a more sinister image and appeal. As in super sharp and strong but corrupted/blighted to a degree. Perhaps I'll focus on creating sharp edges to blades/spikes but let the armor take on a more ansilary appearance, being we're mostly glass cannons anyway.

The other thought I arrived at while painting last night (notably NOT legion models.... i'm easily distracted by challenging ideas, what can I say? pictures to come tonight!) was the idea of doing the legion beast carapace/armor bits in actual bone. I'd keep them mostly dark to keep decent contrast with the pale flesh but overall I think it will still be strikingly different from the black stone look. Thoughts? Has anyone seen this done before? Pictures?

    Here's the aforementioned pix:
Thullg WIP. Showing the little green putty i did for the joints. Primed and washed down twice.

Feralgeist. Fun with inverted paint scheme. I like em, but honestly feel like there's something clutch missing. Perhaps a unifying wash or a touch more electric green highlight.

Swamp Gobbers. Let me know what you think of the effect. I think they came out pretty rad, even if it doesn't look poo-cloud laden.

Well those were the big steps. I'll slam out bases for those two this week to sure em up. There's been other happenings, as usual I'm getting sucked into the whims and not the way. Perhaps sleeping with the legion book under my pillow tonight will osmoses some legion painting fever, as per my local PG's advice. ;-) Keep it flowin.

Those swamp gobbers look great, Nick! I also really like the effect you've achieved on the feralgeist, emphasizing the faces.

As to putting the Legion book under your pillow, that was if you bought the hardcover...

Water thinned GW fleshwash, 3:1 at first then 1:1 while still wet in deeper musculature. inner tentacles, and facial features. This was over a basecoat of pale flesh on white primer. A great starting point for blending and highlighting organics.

Depending on how human flesh you want to go, or how sub-human, I love to mix in chestnut/sepia/greywashes/midnight blue/ruddy green/etc to take the flesh down to whichever tone you need. Keep in mind most 'normal' flesh stays in the warm spectrum and cools feel alien/dead/diseased to our warm-blooded selves.

Been a while since i've updated but a lot of work has been getting done. I've finally arrived at which 50pt list i want to get solid, since the release of Legion's book, which has strongly motivated me to focus. After Paint Night tomorrow, I'll have a ton of new shots as well as more work to show! It's going slow but steady, as per my usual. Stay tuned y'all, if you like what you see.

    Default November Update

So here's a few shots of my recent endeavors and, if any artist may say so themselves, I'm quite happy with the way they're shaping up:

actual photo is slightly larger just click on the little magnifying glass in the upper right corner
Comments are always welcome, as usual. I realized the bone carapace is very similar to my tyranid's albino paint scheme but frankly I liked Legion largely because I'm drawn to this monstrous style of creatures. I've got to finish up the bases on the carni and shredder (waiting on getting some better snow effects) and Thagrosh is definitely still a WIP but his cloak is coming along nicely.
My 50pt fully painted list is with Absylonia, which is due the second week in December. At this rate, doing 3 more heavies, 2 lights, 2 more lessers, 4 forsaken, Absy, and a vessel crew... well thats 1 heavy plus 2 smaller models a week. Can be done even as slow as i am so I've got to buckle down. From there it'll be 25 more points by early Feb for Templecon. I'm totally intimidated and psyched at the same time. This'll be interesting.

    Default the new skinny:

the end of november rapidly approaches and our armies begin to enjoy the deep chill of the north east here. painting sundays continue to roll with my fellow gamers, the productivity slow but steady for me. slammed out 2 more lessers, got all 4 forsaken together, cleaned/assembled/primed my raek and protector, and then the big haul of getting my angelius about 90% done. I gotta say that spending about 4 hours working the stripped flesh style on the serpentine body left me quite weary of my choice on style, however just as with the carni it is all coming together nicely once the carapace and wing-flesh bring home the contrast.

with so much focus on getting the work done I've only got a couple snaps of the new finished lessers (basing to come, as with the rest of the list):

    the new skinny so far:

comments and critiques are welcome, as always. and that blurry blue/white thing in the background will be finished up with pix very soon. ;-)

    Default Angelius, CHECK!

I've finally got around to taking some shots and uploading the recent work. Without further ramblings, here's my Angelius:

as with all others up to this point, the bases are not done, i'm still experimenting with some snow effects to get that finished look i want.

I've got quite a few others in the works atm but I think this guy is next on the chopping block:

Comments are welcome! MOAR PAINT TO COME! (sorry for the washed out pictures, next time i'll move the work light up 6" more... ;-)
